Saints tab QB Trevor Siemian to start vs. Falcons

New Orleans Saints quarterback Trevor Siemian will start this weekend’s game against the visiting Atlanta Falcons, coach Sean Payton announced Friday.

Siemian will make his first start since 2019. He played well in relief of an injured Jameis Winston (torn ACL) during New Orleans’ 36-27 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Sunday.

Siemian, 29, entered the game in the second quarter and completed 16 of 29 passes for 159 yards with one touchdown. Siemian’s performance helped the Saints (5-2) win their third game in a row.

He has completed 59.1 percent of his passes for 5,848 yards with 31 touchdowns and 24 interceptions in 28 career games with the Denver Broncos (2015-17), New York Jets (2019) and Saints.

New Orleans also have Taysom Hill and Ian Book as available quarterbacks. The versatile Hill is expected to return from a concussion to play this week.

Taysom Hill returns as full participant at practice

New Orleans Saints quarterback Taysom Hill returned as a full participant in practice Thursday after missing two games with a concussion.

Hill was upgraded after he was limited in Wednesday’s practice for the 5-2 Saints.

With Hill on track to return Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons (3-4), the big question is whether he or Trevor Siemian will get the nod to start at quarterback.

Siemian replaced Jameis Winston (ACL) last week and went 16-of-29 passing for 159 yards and a touchdown, with no interceptions in a 36-27 win over Tampa Bay.

“Honestly, he came in the game and shocked me,” Saints wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith said of Siemian. “He looked very comfortable in the pocket, he stood in the pocket, he took some hits and still delivered the ball. That just amazed me. He definitely looked like he was ready to play, like no hiccups. He was definitely ready to play.”

Starting Siemian would keep Hill in a swiss army knife role. He has 77 yards rushing with three touchdowns and three catches for 37 yards from spots all over the field.

Also Thursday, Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins (knee) was limited after not practicing on Wednesday. DE Carl Granderson (shoulder) and wide receiver Ty Montgomery (hamstring) were the only Saints out of practice. Defensive end Payton Turner (calf) and tackle Terron Armstead (groin) were limited.

The Saints have won three straight.

Saints’ Jameis Winston (torn ACL) out for season

New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston sustained a torn ACL and is done for the season, coach Sean Payton announced Monday.

An MRI confirmed the expected worst for Winston, who also endured damage to his MCL as well.

Winston was injured on a scramble in the second quarter when he was tackled awkwardly by Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Devin White, who was penalized for a horse-collar tackle.

Winston had to be helped to the sideline after being unable to walk off by himself. He was then carted back to the locker room.

Trevor Siemian replaced Winston for the Saints (5-2), who held on for a 36-27 win over the Bucs.

Taysom Hill, New Orleans’ No. 2 quarterback, was unavailable on Sunday as he remains in concussion protocol after being injured three weeks ago.

“He’s progressing well. He’s on schedule,” Payton said of Hill.

Winston completed 6 of 10 passes for 56 yards and rushed four times for 40 yards before exiting. Siemian closed out the win by completing 16 of 29 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown.

Winston spent his first five NFL seasons with Tampa Bay. He is in his second campaign with the Saints.

Saints’ Taysom Hill (concussion) ruled out vs. Washington

Versatile New Orleans Saints utility player Taysom Hill sustained a concussion and was ruled out for the remainder of Sunday’s game against the host Washington Football Team.

Hill was injured after he was on the receiving end of a helmet-to-helmet hit by Washington’s William Jackson during the first half. Hill remained on his back for several moments before getting to his feet. He was then carted off the field.

Hill had one catch for 11 yards on Sunday to boost his season totals to three and 37, respectively. He also has completed 3 of 4 passes for 12 yards with an interception on the season, and rushed 16 times for 77 yards and three touchdowns.

Jameis Winston makes case to be Saints’ QB in win over Jags

Jameis Winston made a strong statement to be the New Orleans Saints’ starting quarterback, throwing for a pair of touchdowns in a 23-21 preseason win over the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday night.

The competition to replace Saints legend Drew Brees is a two-man race between the strong-armed Winston, who went 9 of 10 for 123 yards, and the versatile Taysom Hill, who was 11 of 20 for 138 yards with a score.

Jacksonville (0-2) also has yet to name a starting quarterback for Week 1. Trevor Lawrence, the first overall pick in this year’s draft, completed 14 of 23 for 113 yards without a touchdown or an interception. Gardner Minshew II went 13 of 21 for 149 yards with a pick.

Marquez Callaway caught both touchdown passes from Winston — a terrific 43-yard grab on the opening drive of the game and an impressive one-handed reception from 29 yards out late in the first quarter. Hill’s TD pass also was a well-thrown ball, with Lil’Jordan Humphrey snagging the 14-yard strike late in the third for the Saints (1-1).

Jacksonville’s C.J. Beathard threw a pair of touchdown passes in the final six minutes of the contest to trim the final margin.

Saints’ next QB? Taysom Hill leads odds on 21 names

Taysom Hill watched in street clothes as Drew Brees struggled in the New Orleans Saints’ loss in the Divisional Playoffs on Sunday.

Brees gave a quick look back at the field at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome before heading into the tunnel, and likely into retirement.

Hill? His status as the heir apparent is uncertain after an up-and-down showing in four starts while Brees was injured during the regular season.

The 30-year-old is still under contract for one more season and did complete 72.7 percent of his passes for 928 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions in 16 games. Hill did not play in the playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers due to a knee injury, and not having his multi-dimensional skillset available did impact coach Sean Payton’s playbook.

Hill has been installed as the 5/2 favorite to take the first snap at quarterback for the Saints in Week 1 by SportsBetting.com.

The list of other candidates is deep and extremely varied.

Matthew Stafford is still under contract with the Lions, but there is speculation the veteran may ask for a fresh start elsewhere. He is being offered at 4/1 to land in New Orleans, followed by Jameis Winston (5/1), who is a free agent after playing as a backup in 2020 with the Saints.

A number of other veteran quarterbacks are expected to be available this offseason, and the Saints could be an appealing destination as an established contender with a number of offensive weapons.

Or does New Orleans double down on Hill for 2021 and look to the draft for a long-term answer for Payton to groom?

Saints Next Quarterback Odds (SportsBetting.com):
Taysom Hill 5/2
Matthew Stafford 4/1
Jameis Winston 5/1
Philip Rivers 6/1
Carson Wentz 10/1
Jimmy Garropolo 11/1
Alex Smith 13/1
Deshaun Watson 16/1
Andy Dalton 20/1
Taylor Heinicke 20/1
Ryan Fitzpatrick 22/1
Teddy Bridgewater 22/1
Jacoby Brissett 25/1
Marcus Mariota 25/1
Sam Darnold 25/1
Drew Lock 25/1
Cam Newton 30/1
Jared Goff 30/1
Mitchell Trubisky 40/1
Matt Ryan 50/1
Ben Roethlisberger 50/1

Report: Saints’ Latavius Murray, Taysom Hill likely out

The New Orleans Saints are unlikely to have backup running back Latavius Murray or multifaceted offensive weapon Taysom Hill when they host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Sunday’s NFC Divisional Round playoff game, according to NFL Network.

Hill, who plays quarterback, wide receiver and running back, suffered a knee injury last week in a 21-9 win over the Chicago Bears and was held out of practice during the week.

Murray was also held out through the week with a quadriceps injury. Both returned to practice Friday but were limited.

Hill frequently replaces starting quarterback Drew Brees in short-yardage situations and filled in as the starter for four games when Brees was injured. He went 3-1 in that stretch.

For the season, Hill has completed 72.7 percent of his passes for 928 yards and four touchdowns. Hill has also rushed 87 times for 457 yards and eight touchdowns and caught eight passes for 98 yards and one score.

Murray, who backs up Alvin Kamara, had 146 carries for 656 yards and four touchdowns during the regular season. He added 23 receptions for 176 yards and one TD.

Brees (ribs) returns to practice

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees returned to practice Wednesday after he fractured 11 ribs that earned him a stint on injured reserve.

The Saints activated Brees off IR on Wednesday, opening a 21-day window for the team to return him to the active roster.

Brees has missed the past four games while recovering from the ribs and lung injuries suffered Nov. 15 against the San Francisco 49ers. The Saints (10-3) have gone 3-1 behind Taysom Hill.

Though practice reportedly went well and Brees wants to return for Sunday’s mega-matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs (12-1), Saints coach Sean Payton told reporters he will not rush Brees back to action.

“We haven’t ruled anything just because we don’t have to,” Payton said Wednesday. “He’s got a ways to go still, and he’s someone we’re not gonna just hurry back and just put him in the game. I think the significance of the injuries are such that you’ve gotta make sure he can function and feel confident.”

That includes throwing without limitations and with a complete range of motion.

Hill has thrown for 834 yards in the four games in place of Brees and has eight touchdowns (four passing, four rushing). But he’s fumbled six times — losing three — and taken 13 sacks in those four games.

Hill’s lone loss last week to the Philadelphia Eagles gave the Green Bay Packers the No. 1 seed in the NFC, based on a win over the Saints in Week 3.
