Reports: FAU fires coach Tom Herman in 2nd season

Florida Atlantic has fired head coach Tom Herman in just his second season, multiple outlets reported Monday.

Associate head coach Chad Lunsford will be named interim head coach for the Owls’ final two games.

Herman finishes with a 6-16 record in Boca Raton, Fla.

The news comes two days after the Owls lost to Temple in overtime, 18-15. The loss dropped FAU to 2-8 and 0-6 in the AAC. Temple fired head coach Stan Drayton on Sunday.

Herman, 49, is owed a buyout of more than $4 million, according to the USA Today database.

FAU hired Herman in 2023. He went 32-18 in four seasons at Texas but was fired after a 7-3 stint in the 2020 COVID season. Herman led the Longhorns to a bowl win in each of his four seasons.

Herman went 22-4 as head coach in Houston from 2015-16. He is 5-1 in bowl games overall, though not at FAU.

Reports: FAU hires Tom Herman as coach

Former Texas and Houston coach Tom Herman has accepted the head coaching position at FAU, multiple reports said Thursday.

Herman has a 54-22 record as a head coach. He led Houston to victory in the 2015 Peach Bowl in his first of two seasons there, then went 32-18 over four seasons at Texas with a 4-0 record in bowl games.

But the Longhorns let him go after a 7-3 season in 2020 in favor of hiring Steve Sarkisian.

Herman, 47, spent the 2021 season as an offensive analyst for the Chicago Bears. He did not coach in 2022, instead calling games for CBS Sports.

He replaces Willie Taggart at FAU after the program fired Taggart at the end of his third season. The Owls went 15-18 during that span, including 5-7 in 2022.

FAU moves from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference next season.

Bears add ex-Texas coach Tom Herman to staff

The Chicago Bears added former Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman to their staff on Monday.

Herman’s title is “offensive analyst/special projects.”

Herman, 45, guided Texas to a 7-3 record in 2020 and a 32-18 record over four seasons.

He led the Longhorns to four straight bowl wins, including a 55-23 victory against Colorado in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio on Dec. 29.

Four days later, Herman was fired and replaced by former Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian.

Herman guided the Houston Cougars to a 22-4 record and two bowl appearances from 2015-16 before taking over in Austin. He also served as the offensive coordinator at Ohio State (2012-14), Iowa State (2009-11), Rice (2007-08) and Texas State (2005-06).

Texas fires Herman after four seasons

Texas changed course and fired football coach Tom Herman on Saturday.

Multiple outlets reported that Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian will become the next head coach in Austin.

Herman, 45, led Texas to a 7-3 record in 2020 and a 32-18 record since replacing Charlie Strong on Nov. 27, 2016. He led the Longhorns to four straight bowl wins, including a 55-23 victory against Colorado in Tuesday’s Alamo Bowl in San Antonio.

“With our football season coming to a close, our vice president and athletics director, Chris Del Conte, has evaluated the UT program’s strengths and weaknesses and where the program is relative to our goals. While we have made measured progress during the past several years under Tom Herman’s leadership, Chris has recommended to the university president, Jay Hartzell, that UT make a coaching change to get us on track to achieving our ambitious goals,” read a university news release.

“President Hartzell and the chair of our Board of Regents, Kevin Eltife, concur with this recommendation and have approved the change. We thank Coach Herman for his service and dedication to our student-athletes, our program and our university.”

Herman’s firing had been the subject of speculation throughout a season that failed to live up to lofty expectations in Austin.

But on Dec. 12, Del Conte issued a statement affirming that Herman would remain the coach.

“There’s been a lot of speculation about the future of our football coach,” Del Conte said at that time. “My policy is to wait until the end of the season before evaluating and commenting on our program and coaches. With the close of the regular season, I want to reiterate that Tom Herman is our coach.”

Herman’s best season at Texas came in 2018 with a 10-4 record and a win in the Sugar Bowl, but he was hired to compete for national championships and the Longhorns are still far below that bar. The school’s most recent national championship came in 2005 under coach Mack Brown.

Texas reportedly owes Herman $15 million to buy out the remaining three years on his guaranteed contract, plus another $9 million for his staff.

Sarkisian, 46, has been on Nick Saban’s staff with the top-ranked Crimson Tide since 2019. He was previously the head coach at Washington from 2009-13 (34-29 record) and at Southern California from 2014-15 (12-6 record). He was the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons from 2017-18.

Earlier this week, he won the Broyles Award, given annually to the nation’s top assistant coach.
