Jaguars coach ‘feels good’ about return of RB Travis Etienne

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne is trending toward returning to action following a two-game absence.

Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said Wednesday that he “feels good” about Etienne taking the field against the host Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Etienne has been sidelined by a hamstring injury that he sustained in Jacksonville’s 35-16 loss to the Chicago Bears in London on Oct. 13.

Coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, Etienne has rushed for 230 yards and two touchdowns in six starts this season. Etienne, 25, has 16 catches for 91 yards.

Second-year running back Tank Bigsby leads Jacksonville in carries (85), rushing yards (493) and rushing touchdowns (four).

A first-round pick (25th overall) in the 2021 NFL Draft, Etienne has gained 3,246 yards from scrimmage and scored 19 touchdowns in 40 career games (35 starts).

Jaguars RB Travis Etienne (foot) cleared for OTAs

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne has been cleared for all practice activities and will take part in offseason workouts that start Monday, coach Doug Pederson said.

Etienne missed the entire 2021 season.

Etienne suffered a Lisfranc injury to his left foot during the second quarter of a 23-21 preseason loss at New Orleans on Aug. 23 and had surgery in September. He landed on injured reserve, ending his rookie season.

Etienne, 23, was selected by the Jaguars with the 25th overall pick in the 2021 draft after they took his college teammate, quarterback Trevor Lawrence, with the No. 1 pick.

Etienne is the all-time leading rusher in Atlantic Coast Conference history after running for 4,952 yards in four seasons (55 games) at Clemson.

Jaguars RB Travis Etienne recovering after foot surgery

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie Travis Etienne had foot surgery Thursday and all went well, according to the running back himself.

“Surgery went great, thanks to everyone for all the love & support! Road to Recovery starts now!” Etienne tweeted post-operation.

Etienne suffered a Lisfranc injury to his left foot during the second quarter of a 23-21 preseason loss at New Orleans on Aug. 23. The surgery was set to be performed by Dr. Robert Anderson.

NFL Network reported he suffered a “significant tear.”

The Saints placed Etienne on injured reserve last week, ending the first-round draft pick’s rookie season.

Etienne, 22, was selected by the Jaguars with the 25th overall pick after they took his college teammate, quarterback Trevor Lawrence, with the No. 1 pick.

Etienne is the all-time-leading rusher in Atlantic Coast Conference history after running for 4,952 yards in four seasons (55 games) at Clemson.

Coach Urban Meyer said after the injury that he wasn’t sure how his team would fill the void left by Etienne.

“It was a shot to the jaw,” Meyer said. “He was really coming on in practice. We saw his big-play ability in practice, not in a game yet. (It’s) a tough injury. How do we fill that? We’re still having that conversation right now.”

Reports: Jags RB Travis Etienne (foot) could miss season

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne’s rookie season is in jeopardy after tests confirmed a Lisfranc injury to his left foot, multiple outlets reported Tuesday.

The first-round draft pick from Clemson suffered the injury during the second quarter of Monday night’s 23-21 preseason loss at New Orleans.

NFL Network said tests revealed “a significant tear” that will sideline him for several months. ESPN said Etienne will have surgery to repair the damage and is likely out for the season.

Etienne, 22, was selected by the Jaguars with the 25th overall pick after they took his college teammate, quarterback Travis Lawrence, with the No. 1 pick.

Jaguars, RB Travis Etienne agree to contract

First-round draft pick Travis Etienne agreed to his four-year rookie contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday.

NFL Network reported Etienne’s deal, which includes a standard fifth-year option, would be official within 24 hours.

Negotiations with Etienne’s agent took longer than a typical deal for a player drafted in the back half of the first round and ultimately included no offset language with a significant amount of his signing bonus paid upfront.

Etienne was drafted No. 25 overall and worked at wide receiver and running back during minicamp. He was one of two first-round picks for the Jaguars, who selected Etienne’s Clemson teammate, quarterback Trevor Lawrence, at No. 1.

No offset language in a contract means if Etienne potentially signs with another team after being cut before the end of his rookie contract, there is no financial impact based on what he would have made in Jacksonville.

The Jaguars are scheduled to open their first season under coach Urban Meyer on Sept. 12 against the Texans in Houston.

Travis Etienne works at WR for Urban Meyer, Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars made a somewhat mysterious selection by picking Clemson running back Travis Etienne in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

The team already had a strong No. 1 running back in James Robinson and had signed dependable veteran Carlos Hyde in free agency.

On Saturday, first-year Jaguars coach Urban Meyer provided a pretty big clue.

Meyer is using Etienne as a wide receiver at this weekend’s rookie minicamp, forming a pass-catch combo with Etienne’s college quarterback — and the No. 1 overall pick — Trevor Lawrence.

“That’s the reason we drafted him is the opportunity to be a dual-threat guy and our history as long as we’ve had a guy like that and we saw him as a guy like that in the draft this year,” Meyer said on a conference call Saturday. “Right now, we’re focusing on the fundamentals of wide receiver play, learning the offense from wide receiver.

“Like I said, worst-case scenario is you have a running back that’s elite with receiver skills and best-case scenario he’s a legitimate dual-threat guy.

Etienne, the 25th overall pick, is up for the challenge.

“I feel like I create a problem outside for a linebacker, so I feel like football is a game of matchups. We’re just trying to get the best matchups for us to go out there and make plays and do what’s best for the team,” Etienne said to CBS Sports.

“I feel like if I really hone in on my skills and just keep working at it, work on my route running ability and really focus in on what the plan is and buy into that, we’ll make plays, we’re playmakers. I feel like, like I said, football is a game of matchups, and this creates the best matchups for us.”

Etienne, 22, caught 102 passes for 1,155 yards and eight touchdowns in four seasons at Clemson. He also rushed for 4,952 yards and 70 scores.

Clemson’s Travis Etienne to enter draft; WR Justyn Ross to return

Clemson All-American running back Travis Etienne announced Friday that he will enter the 2021 NFL Draft.

He leaves Clemson as the program’s all-time leading scorer and the holder of the Atlantic Coast Conference record for career rushing yards. He also joined former Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne as the only player in FBS history to run for at least 13 touchdowns in four seasons.

A four-star recruit in the Class of 2017, Etienne had one year of eligibility remaining because of NCAA rules granting an extra year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“My 4 years spent in South Carolina have been nothing short of spectacular,” Etienne posted on social media. “Who would have ever imagined a young kid from Jennings, LA would become a National Champion with the Clemson Tigers. My time here has allowed me to experience many accolates that some kids only dream of.”

In 55 games, Etienne rushed for 4,952 yards and caught 102 passes for another 1,155. He scored 78 touchdowns, and his career was highlighted by back-to-back 1,600-yard seasons in 2018 and ’19. He posted 24 rushing touchdowns in 2018 and 19 the following season, with both campaigns culminating in an appearance in the College Football Playoff championship game.

Despite Etienne’s expected departure, Clemson got good news when wide receiver Justyn Ross said he will return to the Tigers after a spinal condition sidelined him in 2020.

Ross underwent a congenital fusion procedure in June. After being injured in spring drills in March, diagnostic tests revealed the 6-foot-4 Ross had a bulging disk as well as the spinal fusion.

Before the surgery, Ross was projected as a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Ross caught 112 passes for 1,865 yards and 17 touchdowns in his first two college seasons while starting 14 of 29 games played.

He burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2018, catching 46 passes — nine for touchdowns — and leading the Tigers with 1,000 receiving yards.

Clemson RB Etienne sets ACC rushing mark

Clemson running back Travis Etienne became the all-time leading rusher in Atlantic Coast Conference history on Saturday.

Etienne ran for 16 yards on the final play of the third quarter against Boston College, giving him 4,612 rushing yards for his career.

He surpassed Ted Brown, who gained 4,602 rushing yards for North Carolina State from 1975-78.

A 5-foot-10 senior from Jennings, La., Etienne set the mark on his 616th career carry for the Tigers — an average of nearly 7.5 yards per carry.

He ran for more than 1,600 yards each of the past two seasons and was named ACC Player of the Year both years.
