Reports: Packers claim former Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs

The Green Bays bolstered an ailing defensive secondary on Wednesday by claiming cornerback Trevon Diggs off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys, according to multiple media reports.

The Cowboys released the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback on Tuesday. Dallas coach Brian Schottenheimer said Wednesday that Diggs was waived for multiple reasons, not just because he didn’t fly home with the team on Christmas after a win over the Washington Commanders. Diggs asked the coach if he could stay in his native Maryland to spend the holiday with family and was denied, then skipped the team flight.

The 27-year-old veteran would become a free agent if he went unclaimed, and any team claiming him would be on the hook for Diggs’ base salary of $472,000 for Week 18, plus $58,823 if he is active for this week’s game, per ESPN.

The playoff-bound Packers are short-handed after placing safety Zayne Anderson (ankle) and cornerback Nate Hobbs (knee) on injured reserve on Wednesday. Safety Johnathan Baldwin was signed from the practice squad to the active roster, and cornerback Tyron Herring was signed to the practice squad. Kamal Hadden (ankle) was placed on IR on Tuesday, and wide receiver Bo Melton moved across the line for more depth at cornerback.

Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur said Wednesday that some starters won’t play on Sunday at Minnesota, which might mean resting starting cornerbacks Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine. The Packers (9-6-1) are seeded seventh in the NFC playoffs, and the Vikings (8-8) are out of the playoff race.

Diggs, a second-round pick by Dallas in the 2020 NFL Draft, signed a five-year, $97 million extension in July 2023 — with money guaranteed after this season. Since the signing, he has played in just 21 of a possible 50 games, dealing with multiple injuries.

He sustained a torn ACL in practice two games into the 2023 campaign and missed the rest of the season.

Diggs was activated from the physically unable to perform list in August after missing the final six games of the 2024 season with a left knee injury.

He then landed on injured reserve on Oct. 25, reportedly to address a right knee issue, although he also reportedly suffered a concussion in an “accident at his home” at some point after a Week 6 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Schottenheimer and owner Jerry Jones did not share details of the incident or explain how Diggs was injured.

Diggs returned to action for the Cowboys’ past two games, notching a combined seven tackles in a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers and a win over the Commanders.

Diggs has 25 tackles in eight games (six starts) this season for the Cowboys (7-8-1), whose season ends on the road Sunday against the New York Giants.

In 66 career games (63 starts), Diggs has 20 interceptions, 63 passes defensed and 240 tackles. He was named first-team All-Pro in 2021, when he led the league with 11 interceptions and returned two of them for touchdowns. He made the Pro Bowl in 2021 and 2022.

Cowboys release veteran CB Trevon Diggs

The Dallas Cowboys released two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old veteran will be subject to the waiver process and if unclaimed, will become a free agent.

Diggs confirmed the news to NFL Network, telling a reporter that “he will miss his time in Dallas, he assures me he is healthy and motivated as he looks to join another team looking for another piece to add this postseason.”

Diggs, a second-round pick by Dallas in the 2020 NFL Draft, signed a five-year, $97 million extension in July 2023.

Any team claiming him would be on the hook for Diggs’ base salary of $472,000 for Week 18, plus $58,823 if he is active for this week’s game, per ESPN.

Since signing the extension ahead of the 2023 season, Diggs has played in just 21 of a possible 50 games, dealing with multiple injuries.

He sustained a torn ACL in practice two games into the 2023 campaign and missed the rest of the season.

He was activated from the physically unable to perform list in August after missing the final six games of the 2024 season with a left knee injury.

Diggs then landed on injured reserve on Oct. 25, reportedly to help strengthen a right knee problem, though he also reportedly suffered a concussion in an “accident at his home” at some point after a Week 6 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer and owner Jerry Jones did not share details of the incident or described how Diggs was injured.

He returned to action for the Cowboys’ past two games, notching a combined seven tackles in a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers and a win over the Washington Commanders.

Diggs has 25 tackles in eight games (six starts) this season for the Cowboys (7-8-1), whose season ends on the road on Sunday against the New York Giants.

Cowboys activate CB Trevon Diggs from IR

The Cowboys activated cornerback Trevon Diggs from injured reserve Saturday, making him available to play for the first time in more than two months when Dallas hosts the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

In a corresponding move, cornerback DaRon Bland, who is expected to have surgery on his left foot, was placed on injured reserve.

Diggs has been out since the Cowboys’ Week 6 loss to the Carolina Panthers. At some point later that week, Diggs sustained a concussion in an “accident at his home.” Head coach Brian Schottenheimer and owner Jerry Jones have not shared details of the incident or described how Diggs was injured.

On Oct. 25, Diggs was placed on IR to help strengthen a right knee problem.

Diggs said last week he expected to play in what was ultimately a 34-26 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Dec. 14, but Schottenheimer held him out, saying the Cowboys first wanted to see consistency in “everything” from Diggs.

Schottenheimer seemed more pleased with Diggs’ progress when talking to reporters Friday.

“I’ll say this, when you look at Trevon this week, what I’ve loved the most about him is he’s having fun playing football,” Schottenheimer said. “He’s smiling, running around, but he’s, to his credit, he’s having a really good week.”

The 27-year-old Diggs has 18 tackles in six games (four starts) this season.

He was activated from the physically unable to perform list in August after missing the final six games last season with a left knee injury. The two-time Pro Bowl selection previously sustained a torn ACL in practice two games into the 2023 campaign.

In 64 games (61 starts) since Dallas drafted Diggs in the second round in 2020, he has recorded 20 interceptions, 63 passes defensed, 233 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles. He was named first-team All-Pro in 2021, when he led the league with 11 interceptions and returned two of them for touchdowns.

Cowboys put CB Trevon Diggs (concussion) on IR

The Dallas Cowboys placed cornerback Trevon Diggs on injured reserve Saturday, which will require him to miss at least four games.

Diggs already had been ruled out by the Cowboys (3-3-1) for their game Sunday at the Denver Broncos (5-2).

Diggs sustained a concussion in an “accident at his home” last week and was ruled out for the Week 7 win over the visiting Washington Commanders. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer and owner Jerry Jones have not shared details of the incident or described how Diggs was injured.

He was named first-team All-Pro in 2021, when he led the league with 11 interceptions and returned two of them for touchdowns.

Also Saturday, the Cowboys elevated defensive back Corey Ballantine and running back Malik Davis from the practice squad for the Denver game.

Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs out vs. Broncos, IR possible

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs remains out with a mysterious concussion, and head coach Brian Schottenheimer said there’s a chance he’ll be placed on injured reserve.

“We’re going to keep all options open,” Schottenheimer said Friday.

Diggs was officially ruled out for Sunday’s game at Denver, along with fellow defensive backfield mate safety Donovan Wilson (elbow/shoulder), leaving a short-handed secondary to deal with quarterback Bo Nix. Nix has 1,122 total yards during the Broncos’ four-game winning streak.

Diggs sustained a concussion in an “accident at his home” last Thursday and was ruled out for the Week 7 win over the visiting Washington Commanders. Schottenheimer and owner Jerry Jones have not shared details of the incident or described how Diggs was injured. Jones said on Monday he wasn’t sure the story added up but that he expected Diggs to be back.

In an interview with 105.3 FM in Dallas on Friday, Jones made it clear he doesn’t expect Diggs to play against the Broncos.

“I think questionable for this week and we won’t go past that. But questionable this week — real questionable,” Jones said.

Diggs has not practiced this week or met with media, which is customary for players in concussion protocol.

Diggs, 27, has 18 tackles in six games (four starts) this season.

He was activated from the physically unable to perform list in August after missing the final six games last season with a left knee injury. The two-time Pro Bowl selection previously sustained a torn ACL in practice two games into the 2023 campaign.

Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs out Sunday after accident at home

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs sustained a concussion in an “accident at his home” on Thursday and has been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the visiting Washington Commanders, head coach Brian Schottenheimer said.

Schottenheimer told reporters Friday that the team is gathering additional information on Diggs. He added that Diggs seems to be doing OK.

Diggs, 27, has 18 tackles in six games (four starts) this season.

He was activated from the physically unable to perform list in August after missing the final six games of the 2024 season with a left knee injury. The two-time Pro Bowl selection previously sustained a torn ACL in practice two games into the 2023 campaign.

Cowboys’ Trevon Diggs passes physical, comes off PUP list

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs passed his physical and has been activated from the physically unable to perform list, the team announced Sunday.

Diggs was placed on the PUP list in July at the start of training camp in Oxnard, Calif. He missed the final six games of the 2024 season with a left knee injury, and that came after he sustained a torn ACL in practice two games into the 2023 campaign.

“I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about how hard Trevon’s been working,” Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said on Saturday. “He’s doing an incredible job with (trainer Britt Brown). These things don’t happen if he’s not putting in the time and the effort to do the stuff that he’s been doing. Really proud of him.”

It’s not immediately known whether Diggs will play in the Cowboys’ season opener at the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 4.

Diggs, 26, made 11 starts in 2024 and recorded two interceptions and 42 tackles before being shut down.

In 58 career games (57 starts) since Dallas drafted Diggs in the second round in 2020, he has recorded 20 interceptions, 63 pass deflections, 215 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles. He is a two-time Pro Bowler and was named first-team All-Pro in 2021, when he led the league with 11 interceptions and returned two of them for touchdowns.

Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs has knee surgery; start of ‘25 in doubt

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs underwent knee surgery on Thursday, the team said in a news release.

Diggs missed the final six games of the 2024 season with a left knee injury and was eventually moved to injured reserve.

The surgery he needed was a chondral tissue graft procedure, which the Cowboys’ website said “requires considerable time from the initial injury.”

“Still, the Cowboys are hopeful Diggs can return next season at some point, even if he’s not ready to start practicing at the beginning of training camp,” the team website went on to say.

ESPN and the Dallas Morning News reported the timing of Diggs’ surgery could force him to sit out the start of training camp, if not longer.

Diggs, 26, made 11 starts in 2024 before being shut down and recorded two interceptions and 42 tackles. His injury was to the same knee in which he sustained a torn ACL in practice two games into the 2023 season.

In 58 career games (57 starts) since Dallas drafted Diggs in the second round in 2020, he has recorded 20 interceptions, 63 pass deflections, 215 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles. He is a two-time Pro Bowler and was named first-team All-Pro in 2021, when he led the league with 11 interceptions (two returned for touchdowns).

Reports: Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs to have season-ending knee surgery

The Dallas Cowboys ruled out All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs for Sunday’s road game against the Carolina Panthers, with multiple outlets reporting Saturday that he is expected to have season-ending knee surgery.

Diggs, 26, was questionable for the game after returning to action last Monday in a 27-20 home loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. He had missed the previous two games because of groin and knee issues in what has been an injury-marred season.

He has started all 11 games he has played this season and has 42 tackles, two interceptions and 11 passes defensed.

Diggs tore the ACL in his left knee during a practice before Week 3 last season and played in only two games.

The Cowboys selected him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Alabama. He has 215 tackles, one sack, 63 passes defensed and 20 interceptions — including two returned for touchdowns in 58 regular-season games (57 starts).

Diggs led the league with 11 picks for 142 yards in 2021, when he made the first of his two Pro Bowl teams and was first-team All-Pro.

Dallas also placed linebacker DeMarvion Overshown on injured reserve after he tore multiple ligaments in his right knee in the fourth quarter of the loss to the Bengals. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday that Overshown will require season-ending surgery.

The Cowboys (5-8) on Saturday elevated cornerback Andrew Booth and center Dakoda Shepley from the practice squad to the active roster for the game at Carolina (3-10).

Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs active vs. Falcons

Dallas Cowboys All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs is active for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Diggs, who was listed as questionable, did not participate in practice this week while dealing with a calf injury sustained in Dallas’ 30-24 setback to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

Signed to a five-year, $97 million contract extension in the summer of 2023, Diggs has recorded 28 tackles and an interception in seven games (all starts) this season.

While Diggs is active, the Cowboys (3-4) will be without running back Ezekiel Elliott. Elliott did not travel with the team because of disciplinary reasons, multiple outlets reported.

Fellow running back Rico Dowdle is expected to be back in action after sitting out the 49ers game due to illness. Dalvin Cook was elevated from the practice squad for the second straight week.

The Cowboys listed linebacker Micah Parsons, quarterback Trey Lance, cornerbacks Andrew Booth and DaRon Bland, defensive end K.J. Henry and offensive tackle Matt Waletzko as inactive.

As for the Falcons (5-3), they listed the following players as inactive: running back Jase McClellan, linebackers JD Bertrand and Troy Andersen, defensive lineman Brandon Dorlus, offensive linemen Elijah Wilkinson and Jovaughn Gwyn, and tackle Brandon Parker.
