Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs has knee surgery; start of ‘25 in doubt

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs underwent knee surgery on Thursday, the team said in a news release.

Diggs missed the final six games of the 2024 season with a left knee injury and was eventually moved to injured reserve.

The surgery he needed was a chondral tissue graft procedure, which the Cowboys’ website said “requires considerable time from the initial injury.”

“Still, the Cowboys are hopeful Diggs can return next season at some point, even if he’s not ready to start practicing at the beginning of training camp,” the team website went on to say.

ESPN and the Dallas Morning News reported the timing of Diggs’ surgery could force him to sit out the start of training camp, if not longer.

Diggs, 26, made 11 starts in 2024 before being shut down and recorded two interceptions and 42 tackles. His injury was to the same knee in which he sustained a torn ACL in practice two games into the 2023 season.

In 58 career games (57 starts) since Dallas drafted Diggs in the second round in 2020, he has recorded 20 interceptions, 63 pass deflections, 215 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles. He is a two-time Pro Bowler and was named first-team All-Pro in 2021, when he led the league with 11 interceptions (two returned for touchdowns).

Reports: Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs to have season-ending knee surgery

The Dallas Cowboys ruled out All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs for Sunday’s road game against the Carolina Panthers, with multiple outlets reporting Saturday that he is expected to have season-ending knee surgery.

Diggs, 26, was questionable for the game after returning to action last Monday in a 27-20 home loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. He had missed the previous two games because of groin and knee issues in what has been an injury-marred season.

He has started all 11 games he has played this season and has 42 tackles, two interceptions and 11 passes defensed.

Diggs tore the ACL in his left knee during a practice before Week 3 last season and played in only two games.

The Cowboys selected him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Alabama. He has 215 tackles, one sack, 63 passes defensed and 20 interceptions — including two returned for touchdowns in 58 regular-season games (57 starts).

Diggs led the league with 11 picks for 142 yards in 2021, when he made the first of his two Pro Bowl teams and was first-team All-Pro.

Dallas also placed linebacker DeMarvion Overshown on injured reserve after he tore multiple ligaments in his right knee in the fourth quarter of the loss to the Bengals. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday that Overshown will require season-ending surgery.

The Cowboys (5-8) on Saturday elevated cornerback Andrew Booth and center Dakoda Shepley from the practice squad to the active roster for the game at Carolina (3-10).

Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs active vs. Falcons

Dallas Cowboys All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs is active for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Diggs, who was listed as questionable, did not participate in practice this week while dealing with a calf injury sustained in Dallas’ 30-24 setback to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

Signed to a five-year, $97 million contract extension in the summer of 2023, Diggs has recorded 28 tackles and an interception in seven games (all starts) this season.

While Diggs is active, the Cowboys (3-4) will be without running back Ezekiel Elliott. Elliott did not travel with the team because of disciplinary reasons, multiple outlets reported.

Fellow running back Rico Dowdle is expected to be back in action after sitting out the 49ers game due to illness. Dalvin Cook was elevated from the practice squad for the second straight week.

The Cowboys listed linebacker Micah Parsons, quarterback Trey Lance, cornerbacks Andrew Booth and DaRon Bland, defensive end K.J. Henry and offensive tackle Matt Waletzko as inactive.

As for the Falcons (5-3), they listed the following players as inactive: running back Jase McClellan, linebackers JD Bertrand and Troy Andersen, defensive lineman Brandon Dorlus, offensive linemen Elijah Wilkinson and Jovaughn Gwyn, and tackle Brandon Parker.

Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs game-time decision vs. Falcons

Dallas Cowboys All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs will be a game-time decision for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, head coach Mike McCarthy said on Friday.

Diggs has yet to participate in practice this week while dealing with a calf injury sustained in Dallas’ 30-24 setback to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Earlier on Friday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas that Diggs has a “tear in his calf.”

McCarthy, however, said Diggs had a “good workout” with Cowboys athletic trainer Britt Brown on Friday.

“There’s specific drills we’ll need to him to do tomorrow, but he was much better today than we could’ve anticipated,” McCarthy said. “He’s doing everything he can to try to get ready for Sunday.”

Signed to a five-year, $97 million contract extension in the summer of 2023, Diggs has recorded 28 tackles and an interception in seven games (all starts) this season.

Diggs, 26, led the NFL with 11 interceptions in 2021. The two-time Pro Bowl selection has 19 picks — including two returned for touchdowns — to go along with 201 tackles in 54 career games (53 starts) since being selected by Dallas in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Cowboys All-Pro Micah Parsons (ankle) likely out vs. Falcons

Dallas Cowboys All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons is expected to miss his fourth consecutive game because of a high ankle sprain, coach Mike McCarthy said Thursday.

Parsons has not practiced since injuring his ankle in the fourth quarter of the 20-15 win over the host New York Giants on Sept. 26.

The Cowboys (3-4), who visit the Atlanta Falcons (5-3) on Sunday, did not place Parsons on injured reserve, which would have required missing at least four games.

Dallas has been waiting for Parsons to clear the ramp-up process through Britt Brown, the team’s associate athletic trainer and director of rehabilitation.

“(Parsons is) here. He’s in the meetings. Until they clear the return to play with Britt, I really don’t even entertain that thought,” McCarthy said Thursday. “So, he’s not quite there yet.”

Parsons, 25, was a two-time first-team All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowl selection with 40.5 sacks over his first three seasons from 2021-23. He has 14 tackles and one sack in four starts this season.

“He’s an impact player,” McCarthy said on Wednesday. “Where he is in the rehab, he’s making gains each week. He’s been in every day. He’s just not ready to get into the practice format. But yeah, definitely missed him.”

The coach said Parsons would be in the rehab group at practice on Thursday and likely will be joined by cornerback Trevon Diggs, who missed practice on Wednesday with a calf injury.

Report: Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs has ACL surgery

Dallas Cowboys Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs underwent surgery to repair his torn ACL this week, ESPN reported Wednesday.

Diggs, who had the operation on Tuesday, is now set for a 2024 return after doctors found that his other knee ligaments were intact, per the report.

Diggs sustained the injury during a Sept. 21 practice.

Signed to a five-year, $97 million contract extension this summer, Diggs recorded four tackles, an interception and a forced fumble in two games this season.

Diggs, 25, led the NFL with 11 interceptions in 2021. The two-time Pro Bowl selection has 18 picks — including two returned for touchdowns — to go along with 173 tackles in 47 career games (46 starts) since being selected by Dallas in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Reports: Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs on crutches after practice

Dallas Cowboys star cornerback Trevon Diggs sustained an apparent knee injury during a 1-on-1 portion of practice on Thursday and was spotted on crutches after the session, multiple media outlets reported.

Diggs was set to undergo an MRI, per The Dallas Morning News.

“I’m not gonna speculate, way too early,” Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott said. “I saw him leaving the field. Prayers and hoping for the best, simple as that.”

Signed to a five-year, $97 million contract extension this summer, Diggs has recorded four tackles, an interception and a forced fumble in two games this season.

Reports: Cowboys, CB Trevon Diggs agree to 5-year $97M deal

Star cornerback Trevon Diggs agreed to a five-year contract extension with the Dallas Cowboys, according to multiple reports Tuesday.

The deal is worth $97 million and has a maximum value of $104 million with incentives, according to NFL Network.

The deal reportedly includes a signing bonus of $21.25 million, according to ESPN.

A second-round pick of the Cowboys in 2020 (51st overall), Diggs had 59 tackles, 14 passes defensed and three interceptions while playing in all 17 games last season.

Diggs, 24, led the NFL with 11 interceptions in 2021 and has a total of 17 interceptions in 45 games (44 starts) over three seasons with the Cowboys.

Had the deal not been reached, Diggs was set to become a free agent after the upcoming season.

The deal makes Diggs ($19.4 million average) one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the NFL per average annual salary, behind Green Bay’s Jaire Alexander ($21 million), Cleveland’s Denzel Ward ($20.1 million), New Orleans’ Marshon Lattimore ($19.52M) and Baltimore’s Marlon Humphrey ($19.5M).

Diggs brothers excited to face off in Pro Bowl

The Pro Bowl is annually a game in which many players opt out and some participate while disinterested.

In the midst of all the roster turmoil, there are at least two players highly eager to play in the Sunday game between the NFC and AFC at Las Vegas: the Diggs brothers.

NFL interception champion Trevon Diggs of the Dallas Cowboys can’t wait for that moment when he is staring across the line of scrimmage and sees older brother Stefon Diggs of the Buffalo Bills just a couple yards away.

“Probably one of my favorite moments of this year, for real, because that’s my brother,” Trevon Diggs recently told reporters. “I love him to death and just being able to go up there (to the Pro Bowl) with him, that’s fire.”

Trevon Diggs, a 23-year-old cornerback, had a breakout campaign in his second NFL season. With his league-best 11 interceptions, he matched Everson Walls (1981) for the Cowboys’ single-season record, and he returned two for touchdowns.

A big reason for his rapid rise is the offseason workouts he conducted with Stefon. The 28-year-old wideout is in his second straight Pro Bowl after catching 103 passes for 1,225 yards and a career-high 10 touchdowns this season.

On the day of the Pro Bowl selections, Stefon and Trevon were on FaceTime with 15 other family members and close friends. Stefon was pleased to earn another berth, but seeing his brother’s face appear on television as a selection was the highlight of the call.

“I was more happy for him than I was for myself,” Stefon Diggs said. “I was just more proud than anything. … I saw his face, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, that’s my little brother.’”

Stefon Diggs’ usual quarterback, Josh Allen, is one of the many star players who won’t be in Las Vegas. Allen initially was an alternate for the game, but he turned down an invitation last week, citing body soreness.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson (ankle) also declined a recent invitation, leading to Mac Jones of the New England Patriots getting the call as the AFC’s third quarterback. Justin Herbert of the Chargers is the AFC’s starting quarterback with Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs in reserve.

The top two candidates for NFL Most Valuable Player aren’t playing for the NFC — Aaron Rodgers (undisclosed injury) of the Green Bay Packers and the now-retired Tom Brady of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The NFC quarterbacks are now-starter Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals and two replacements — Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks and Kirk Cousins of the Minnesota Vikings.

Packers receiver Davante Adams (undisclosed injury) is among the others who pulled out.

Mike Vrabel of the Tennessee Titans is coach of the AFC and Matt LaFleur of the Packers leads the NFC. The Titans and Packers both tied for the best regular-season record in their conference.

There will be no opening kickoff in this year’s game as the league experiments with the “Spot and Choose” method that the Ravens proposed to the Competition Committee last year.

The team that wins the coin toss will be able to spot the ball on any part of the field and choose the direction. The other team will then choose whether to start on offense or defense from the designated spot.

Cowboys activate rookie CB Diggs (foot)

The Dallas Cowboys activated rookie cornerback Trevon Diggs from the reserve/injured list on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Diggs, 22, had been out since suffering a foot injury on Nov. 8 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. A second-round draft pick out of Alabama, Diggs has been effective for the Cowboys in his first season with 48 tackles, 10 passes defended and two interceptions in nine games (all starts).

Dallas also had cornerback Chidobe Awuzie return from the reserve/COVID-19 list and cornerback Anthony Brown (ribs) return to full practice this week. All three corners have not been active for the Cowboys in the same game this season since the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams.

The Cowboys also expect safety Donovan Wilson (groin) to be back in the lineup.

Dallas also placed two players on the reserve/injured list in cornerback Deante Burton and linebacker Justin March. Both will be out for the remainder of the regular season.

The Cowboys also signed offensive tackle Jordan Mills from the practice squad, and running back Sewo Olonilua and cornerback Chris Westry were elevated from the practice squad.

Olonilua will be an insurance policy for running back Ezekiel Elliott (calf), who is listed as questionable but expected to be available against the 49ers.
