Report: Jags QB Trevor Lawrence (shoulder) doubtful

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is unlikely to play Sunday against the visiting Minnesota Vikings due to a shoulder injury, NFL Network reported Thursday.

Lawrence, 25, is considered day-to-day as he continues to get treatment on his left shoulder, per the report. He is said to be weighing his options, which could include surgery down the road.

Lawrence was limited in Wednesday’s practice, with coach Doug Pederson saying his signal-caller is “sore.” He was listed on the injury report hours later with a left shoulder injury.

Asked whether Lawrence would be on the field Sunday for the Jaguars (2-7) against the Vikings (6-2), Pederson said he “can’t answer that today.”

On Wednesday, backup Mac Jones worked with the first-team offense and Jacksonville signed C.J. Beathard off the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lawrence has completed 61.3 percent of his passes for 2,004 yards, 11 touchdowns and six interceptions through nine starts in 2024.

Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence limited, Week 10 status unclear

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was limited in Wednesday’s practice and his status for Week 10 against the Minnesota Vikings is unclear.

Head coach Doug Pederson said Lawrence is “sore” with an “upper-body injury,” that is specifically a left shoulder issue according to multiple reports.

The Jaguars (2-7) are at home Sunday to face the Minnesota Vikings (6-2), but Pederson could not promise Lawrence will be on the field.

“Can’t answer that,” he said. “Can’t answer that today, not sitting here Wednesday.”

Backup Mac Jones worked with the first-team offense on Wednesday.

Lawrence has 11 touchdowns and six interceptions this season. His injury came to light on the same day Jacksonville signed C.J. Beathard off of the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad. Beathard was cut by Jacksonville at the end of training camp with an injury settlement. He spent the 2021-23 seasons as the No. 2 quarterback behind Lawrence.

Beathard, 30, has appeared in 32 NFL games since San Francisco selected him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He has a 3-10 record as a starter with the 49ers and Jaguars (2021-23) and has completed 60.4 percent of his pass attempts for 3,886 yards with 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Jaguars chase missing ingredient: ‘consistency’

Details and consistency are killing the Jacksonville Jaguars from the under-the-helmet vantage point of quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

“Everyone being more consistent, including myself,” Lawrence said Wednesday afternoon in London.

Jacksonville is the “home” team this week against the New England Patriots (1-5) as it completes a two-game stand in England following a 35-16 loss to the Chicago Bears last week.

The Jaguars went 1-5 down the stretch in 2023 to fall out of playoff contention and started 2024 with the same record. The lone win was a 37-34 shootout with the Indianapolis Colts on Oct. 6.

“Quite honesty, the past couple years, when we haven’t played well — just the inconsistency from me or anyone at any given moment. You’re never going to be perfect, but just doing your job,” Lawrence said.

With the team’s first interception of the season last week, Jacksonville has only three total takeaways while allowing 21 touchdowns. They have seven total giveaways, which Lawrence believes is what truly ails the Jaguars.

“Taking care of the ball. Try to have a turnover-free game on Sunday. That’s the biggest part of this game, taking care of the ball,” Lawrence said. “That’s the biggest indication of winning or losing. How many turnovers you have, how many (takeaways) you’ve got as a defense. Those things go hand-in-hand. We’ve got to [be] better with it as an offense.”

Jags coach on Trevor Lawrence extension: Sooner the better

Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said Monday that talks on a long-term contract extension for franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence are ongoing, adding “hopefully it gets done” sooner rather than later.

Lawrence is set to play this season for $5.6 million and the Jags picked up his fifth-year option for 2025, which would pay him $25.6 million, barring an extension. Lawrence is expected to join the $50 million club, whenever the deal gets done.

“I think it’s part of the business,” Pederson told reporters Monday. “Obviously the sooner you get it done, right, it’s behind everybody, and now we focus on football, and so that’s not lingering and that’s not out there.”

Joe Burrow, Jared Goff, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts all make north of $50 million per season, with Dak Prescott poised to join the club, too. Prescott is entering the final year of his contract in Dallas.

“I know (Jaguars GM) Trent (Baalke) and (Lawrence’s) agent, they’ve continued to talk and will talk, and they’re working hard and tirelessly. I’ve just got to coach Trevor and coach football, and hopefully it gets done, and it will,” Pederson added.

Lawrence, 24, made the Pro Bowl in 2022 and is 20-30 as a starter, passing for 11,770 yards with 58 touchdowns and 39 interceptions through three seasons since being drafted No. 1 overall in 2021. He has rushed for 964 yards and 11 scores.

Trevor Lawrence not distracted by looming deal with Jaguars

As he enters his fourth NFL season, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is eligible for a contract extension for the first time and expressed his desire to remain in Jacksonville “for as long as possible.”

Speaking to the media on Tuesday at the beginning of the 2024 offseason program, the former No. 1 overall pick said his representatives have discussed a new contract with the Jaguars.

“We love it here and I love where we’re headed as an organization and feel like I’m just getting better every year and my best ball’s definitely ahead of me,” said Lawrence, who has started 50 games over his first three seasons. “So, from that standpoint, obviously that would be great.”

Since the 2011 collective bargaining agreement, NFL draft picks sign four-year deals, with teams holding fifth-year options for first-round selections. After a player’s third season, teams must choose whether to exercise that option during the offseason.

May 2 is the deadline for the Jaguars to decide whether to pick up the option on Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne Jr. (No. 25 overall pick in 2021).

“It’s not like this is necessarily going to be my last season (on the rookie contract),” Lawrence said. “There’s a lot that could happen. It’s not really my focus right now. At the end of the day, my job isn’t going to change whether I get extended or not before this season.

“My job is to go win games and to be the best I can be for this team so we can have a chance to win a Super Bowl.”

Coming off a strong 2022 campaign (25 touchdowns, eight interceptions), the 24-year-old Lawrence played through injuries down the stretch last season and finished with 21 TDs and 14 picks. He also missed a start for the first time in his NFL career, sitting out a Week 17 home win against the Carolina Panthers.

Gearing up for the 2024 season, Lawrence said he won’t let any contract talk get in the way of his preparation.

“I can’t lie: Obviously it would be nice to have that done and feel good about it,” Lawrence said. “But no, it’s not really the focus right now. Even if I get the contract extension, that’s still my job even more so.”

Reports: Patriots to trade QB Mac Jones to Jaguars

The New England Patriots will trade quarterback Mac Jones, a former first-round pick, to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a late-round draft pick, according to multiple media reports Sunday.

The deal calls for Jones, who is from Jacksonville, to head to the Jaguars for a sixth-round pick in April’s draft, according to an ESPN report. Trades are not official until the new league year starts Wednesday, and Jones would have to pass a physical.

Jones, 25, was taken with the 15th selection in the 2021 draft out of Alabama. The No. 1 pick in that draft, Trevor Lawrence, is the starter in Jacksonville.

The Patriots, who with the No. 3 pick this year could select one of the highest-rated quarterbacks, were not going to pick up Jones’ fifth-year option for the 2025 season before the May 2 deadline, according to reports.

His career in New England started on a bright note. Jones made the Pro Bowl and went 10-7 in his first season, passing for 3,801 yards with 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. The Patriots lost to the Buffalo Bills 47-17 in the wild-card playoff round.

Over the past two seasons, however, Jones was 8-17 as New England’s starter with 24 touchdowns and 23 interceptions and fell out of favor with then-head coach Bill Belichick

Bailey Zappe, a fourth-round draft pick in 2022, wound up starting six games for the Patriots during Belichick’s final season with the franchise in 2023.

The team’s unofficial depth chart on Sunday listed Zappe as the starter, followed by Jones and Nathan Rourke.

Jones played under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as a rookie, then after McDaniels left to coach the Las Vegas Raiders, the quarterback was coached by Matt Patricia, Joe Judge and Bill O’Brien.

In his three seasons in New England, Jones completed 66.1 percent of his passes for 8,918 yards, 46 touchdowns and 36 interceptions in 42 games (all starts).

Of the five quarterbacks drafted in the first 15 picks in 2021, only Lawrence is a lock to start 2024 with the team that drafted him.

The San Francisco 49ers traded No. 3 pick Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys in 2023. The New York Jets benched No. 2 pick Zach Wilson and have given him permission to seek a trade, and Justin Fields, the No. 11 selection, could be traded by the Chicago Bears this offseason.

Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence active vs. Titans

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is active and expected to start Sunday’s game against the host Tennessee Titans in Nashville, Tenn.

With a win in the regular-season finale, the Jaguars would clinch the AFC South and host the Cleveland Browns in the wild-card round of the playoffs next weekend. With a loss or tie, they are out.

Lawrence was listed as questionable due to a sprained AC joint in his right (throwing) shoulder. He sat out his first career NFL game last Sunday in Jacksonville’s 26-0 victory over the Carolina Panthers.

Lawrence, 24, has thrown for 3,736 yards with 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 15 games this season. He also has rushed for 329 yards with four scores for the Jaguars (9-7).

While Lawrence is active, Jacksonville made the following players inactive: wide receiver Christian Kirk, linebacker Yasir Abdullah, offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen and defensive tackle Angelo Blackson. Matt Barkley is the emergency third quarterback.

The Titans (5-11) will be without quarterback Will Levis, defensive back Anthony Kendall, linebackers Caleb Murphy and Trevis Gipson, offensive linemen Jaelyn Duncan and Daniel Brunskill, and defensive lineman TK McLendon.

Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence game-time decision at Tennessee

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence is officially questionable to play Sunday at Tennessee with the AFC South division on the line for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Seeking a repeat of the division title, the Jaguars (9-7) expect Lawrence to be a game-time decision, head coach Doug Pederson said Friday.

Lawrence, 24, sat out last week with a shoulder injury and has been limited to position-specific workouts this week.

C.J. Beathard started and led Jacksonville to a 26-0 win over the Carolina Panthers last week. Beathard has prepared to be the starter against the Titans (5-11), who are eliminated from playoff contention and facing their own QB questions due to rookie Will Levis’ ankle injury.

“Our guys have a lot of belief in C.J.,” offensive coordinator Press Taylor said of Jacksonville’s confidence level if Lawrence misses a game for the second time in his career. “It’s one thing to say that from what you’ve seen in preparation and practice and preseason and things like that, then for him to go out, execute the game, plan and lead our team to a win — protect the football — I think that just increases everybody’s level of respect for him and trust in him and in what he’s capable of.”

Lawrence increased his throwing distance to longer throws with more velocity on Friday, a sign he is progressing according to a rehabilitation plan.

The Jaguars can’t win the AFC South if they lose, but would be in the playoffs as a wild card with a loss provided the Baltimore Ravens beat the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday and the Las Vegas Raiders beat the Denver Broncos — or tie — Sunday afternoon. The game between the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans also couldn’t end in a tie.

Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence to miss first start of career

After making 49 consecutive starts since he was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 draft, Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence will miss Sunday’s game against the visiting Carolina Panthers due to a sprained right shoulder.

Lawrence, 24, suffered the injury to his right AC joint in last Sunday’s 30-12 loss at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. C.J. Beathard will replace Lawrence, who didn’t practice all week, and make his first start since the final game of the 2020 season with the San Francisco 49ers.

The Jaguars (8-7) have lost four in a row to fall into a three-way tie for first place in the AFC South with the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans.

If the Jaguars beat the Panthers (2-13), and the Colts and Texans lose Sunday, Jacksonville would clinch the division title. The Jaguars close the regular season at the Tennessee Titans on Jan. 7.

Lawrence’s streak of 49 straight starts was tied with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes for the second longest active streak at the position.

The injury occurred late in the third quarter against the Buccaneers when Lawrence dove for a first down on a fourth-and-1 play. He stayed in and eventually threw an 18-yard touchdown to Calvin Ridley to finish the drive but sat out the rest of the game.

Beathard, 30, was 11-for-15 passing for 94 yards and a touchdown after Lawrence’s injury. Beathard also relieved Lawrence after the latter suffered a right ankle sprain against the Cincinnati Bengals on Dec. 4, completing 9 of 10 passes for 63 yards.

In 12 games over three seasons as Lawrence’s backup, Beathard has completed 76.2 percent of his passes for 239 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. In three seasons with the 49ers, Beathard was 2-10 as a starter.

It’s been a painful season for Lawrence, who has now dealt with four injuries in 2023. In a win against the Colts on Oct. 15, he sprained his left knee. In addition to the high ankle sprain against the Bengals, he suffered a concussion against the Baltimore Ravens on Dec. 17.

In 15 games this season, Lawrence has completed 65.5 percent of his passes for 3,736 yards, along with 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Jags QB Trevor Lawrence ‘pretty sore,’ will limit throwing

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence said Wednesday that his shoulder is still “pretty sore” and that he doesn’t plan to throw much this week in practice in the hopes of being ready to play Sunday.

Lawrence is dealing with a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder, an injury he sustained in last week’s loss to Tampa Bay.

“You never know how things are going to heal up and how quickly you’re going to recover, but right now it’s still pretty sore and still kind of working through the beginning stages of getting back,” he said. “We’ll kind of see how it goes.”

Lawrence was at practice Wednesday in shorts and a hoodie while C.J. Beathard took first-team reps.

Lawrence has not missed a game in his NFL career, starting 49 consecutive games since being selected No. 1 overall in 2021.

Beathard will draw the start if Lawrence can’t go Sunday against the visiting Carolina Panthers. Beathard’s last NFL start came with the San Francisco 49ers on Jan. 3, 2021, the final game of the regular season.

Lawrence sustained his latest injury while stretching to convert a fourth-and-1 in the third quarter of Sunday’s 30-12 loss at Tampa Bay. He landed out of bounds on his right shoulder. Lawrence finished 17-for-29 passing for 211 yards, two interceptions and a lost fumble against the Buccaneers.

He has also dealt with a high ankle sprain and a concussion this season but has not missed any games. The 2021 No. 1 overall pick has thrown for 3,736 yards with 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 15 starts.

Jacksonville has lost four in a row but still leads the AFC South based on tiebreakers. The Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans are all 8-7.

For depth, the Jaguars signed quarterback Matt Barkley on Tuesday from the New York Giants’ practice squad. Barkley, who has appeared in at least one game in six different NFL seasons, last played in 2020 for the Buffalo Bills.
