Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence has sprained AC joint

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is dealing with a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder, coach Doug Pederson confirmed Tuesday.

Lawrence sustained his latest injury while stretching to convert a fourth-and-1 in the third quarter of Sunday’s 30-12 loss at Tampa Bay. He landed out of bounds on his right shoulder.

Pederson said Lawrence is improving but his status for Wednesday’s practice is uncertain.

“Obviously he’s a little bit sore but doing better today than he did yesterday,” Pederson said Tuesday afternoon. “We’ll see where he is at again tomorrow.

“May do a little something tomorrow but I would doubt that just because it’s a little bit too soon, but we’ll see as the week goes on.”

Backup C.J. Beathard will work with the first team in practice Wednesday if Lawrence is unavailable.

Jacksonville has lost four in a row but still leads the AFC South based on tiebreakers. The Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans are all 8-7.

The Jaguars host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday and finish the regular season on the road against the Tennessee Titans on Jan. 7.

Lawrence finished 17-for-29 passing for 211 yards, two interceptions and a lost fumble against the Buccaneers.

He has also dealt with a high ankle sprain and a concussion this season but has not missed any games. The 2021 No. 1 overall pick has thrown for 3,736 yards with 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 15 starts.

Jags QB Trevor Lawrence to undergo tests on shoulder

Trevor Lawrence suffered his third injury in four weeks on Sunday, leaving the Jacksonville Jaguars’ blowout loss to the host Tampa Bay Buccaneers after three quarters with a right shoulder injury.

Lawrence landed on his throwing shoulder while running and diving for a first down late in the third quarter of Jacksonville’s fourth straight defeat. He stayed in to complete the drive, tossing an 18-yard touchdown to Calvin Ridley for the team’s first points of the day.

But C.J. Beathard took over at quarterback in the fourth quarter with Jacksonville trailing 30-6. The Buccaneers polished off a 30-12 win.

Lawrence told reporters postgame that his shoulder was “bothering” him and the team will have him undergo tests Monday.

“When I landed, I knew something — something was off,” Lawrence said.

Lawrence finished 17-for-29 passing for 211 yards, two interceptions and a lost fumble.

The 2021 first overall draft pick picked up a high ankle sprain Dec. 4 against the Cincinnati Bengals, but in a surprise turn he managed not to miss any time. He then suffered a concussion during last week’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens but still cleared concussion protocol in time to play on Christmas Eve.

The Jaguars (8-7) went from holding a comfortable lead in the AFC South to dropping into a three-way tie with the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans.

Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence practices, awaits concussion clearance

For the second time this month, anticipation of a near-certain absence for Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence took a surprising turn when he returned to practice four days after entering concussion protocol.

Lawrence awaits final clearance from the NFL-mandated protocol for documented head injuries before he’s permitted to travel with Jacksonville (8-6) across the state on the team charter Saturday to Tampa, Fla., head coach Doug Pederson said.

Pederson said Friday morning prior to practice that he didn’t expect Lawrence to be limited in the afternoon workout.

“Part of the protocol where he’s at in the stages is he can practice today. It still doesn’t mean he’s cleared,” Pederson said, noting part of the purpose of the practice is gauging how a player reacts to the stress of the workout.

If Lawrence is cleared, he’d be making his 51st consecutive start for the Jaguars since he was selected with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. Lawrence, 24, made a rapid recovery from a high-ankle sprain, typically a three- to five-week issue, earlier this month to start on a short week coming out of a loss to the Bengals on “Monday Night Football.”

C.J. Beathard, 2-10 as a starter in his career, has taken most of the first-team snaps with the offense this week.

The Buccaneers (7-7) have won three consecutive games.

Lawrence’s availability for Sunday’s game is in question after he was placed in concussion protocol following last Sunday’s 23-7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

“To me it’s the same. I’m taking a lot more reps at practice and stuff, but I’m preparing the same way,” Beathard said. “You gotta prepare as if you’re gonna be going and then, hopefully, (Lawrence) clears concussion protocol by the end of this week for sure.”

Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence to start vs. Browns

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence will start Sunday’s game against the host Cleveland Browns.

Lawrence, 24, sustained a high ankle sprain during the team’s 34-31 overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday. He returned to practice Thursday in a limited capacity and participated in a pregame workout in Cleveland on Sunday before the Jaguars confirmed he is good to play against the Browns.

Lawrence did not miss a start during college at Clemson. He has yet to miss a start in his NFL career since being selected by the Jaguars with the first overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Lawrence has 3,004 yards passing, 14 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 94.4 passer rating on the season. He also has 248 yards rushing with four scores on the ground.

Multiple media outlets reported Cleveland will turn to quarterback Joe Flacco for the second straight week.

Flacco didn’t look uncomfortable last week in a 36-19 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Pressed into the starting role 14 days after signing with the team as a street free agent, Flacco had the Browns driving for the go-ahead score, trailing 20-19 in the fourth quarter, when he threw an interception.

Flacco, 38, completed 23 of 44 passes for 254 yards with two touchdowns and that one pick.

While Flacco is active, the Browns (7-5) listed the following players as inactive: cornerback Denzel Ward, linebacker Mohamoud Diabate, center Luke Wypler, defensive end Isaiah McGuire, defensive tackle Siaki Ika and offensive tackle Dawand Jones.

As for the Jaguars (8-4), cornerbacks Tyson Campbell and Tre Herndon, linebacker Yasir Abdullah, offensive lineman Walker Little, tight end Brenton Strange, defensive tackle Foley Fatukasi and quarterback Nathan Rourke are inactive.

Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence (ankle) returns to practice

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence returned to practice Thursday in a limited capacity, less than 72 hours after suffering an ankle injury on “Monday Night Football.”

Lawrence, 24, sustained a high ankle sprain during the team’s 34-31 overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. He sat out Wednesday’s practice before his return Thursday, increasing the chances that he will be able to play against the host Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

Lawrence didn’t partake in every drill but did some throwing on Thursday, according to reporters on the scene in Jacksonville.

“I’ll never put myself or the team at higher risk that we aren’t going to do our best because I can’t do my job,” Lawrence told reporters Wednesday, adding, “We have an amazing medical staff.”

Lawrence also said the Jaguars had a cart available to take him off the field Monday night, but he refused it.

C.J. Beathard, who replaced Lawrence on Monday night, was a limited participant at practice for the second straight day with a non-throwing shoulder injury, but he said Wednesday there would be no doubt about his availability.

Lawrence has 3,004 yards passing, 14 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 94.4 passer rating on the season. He also has 248 yards rushing with four scores on the ground.

Jags QB Trevor Lawrence ‘lot better,’ not practicing

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence sat out practice Wednesday with the ankle injury he suffered last week but said he feels “a lot better” than he thought he would at this stage.

Lawrence sustained a high-ankle sprain during the team’s 34-31 overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night. But head coach Doug Pederson isn’t ruling Lawrence out for the Jaguars’ game against the host Cleveland Browns (7-5) on Sunday.

C.J. Beathard, who replaced Lawrence on Monday night and led the Jaguars to a game-tying field goal in regulation, would get the start if Lawrence is unable to go. Beathard, 30, went 9 of 10 for 63 yards in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Beathard also landed on the injury report with a non-throwing shoulder injury, but he said there will be no doubt about his availability this week. He was limited in Wednesday’s practice.

Lawrence was walking without a protective boot on Wednesday.

“I feel a lot better, I feel better than I would have thought I’d feel,” Lawrence told reporters. “I’m very fortunate, I’m thankful that there wasn’t a worse injury.”

But he’s not going to rush back.

“I’ll never put myself or the team at higher risk that we aren’t going to do our best because I can’t do my job,” Lawrence told reporters, but added, “We have an amazing medical staff.”

Lawrence has 3,004 yards passing, 14 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 94.4 passer rating on the season. He also has 248 yards rushing with four scores on the ground.

In addition to Lawrence, OL Walker Little (hamstring) and CB Tre Herndon (concussion) also missed practice. Wideout Christian Kirk is expected to miss 6-8 weeks with a groin injury that will require surgery.

At 8-4, the Jaguars still own the AFC South lead by a game over the Houston Texans.

Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence injures ankle, exits game

Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence was helped off the field late in the Jaguars’ game against the visiting Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night, and an initial report indicated he sprained his right ankle.

After the Bengals won 34-31 in overtime, NFL Network reported that the early diagnosis was a sprained ankle with an MRI exam to be performed Tuesday.

Speaking with reporters after the game, Jaguars coach Doug Pederson would not commit to any sort of diagnosis on Lawrence.

“I don’t have any information yet on Trevor,” he said. “We’re still evaluating him, you know, so we’ll have more tests and things done here tonight and tomorrow. So we’ll probably have a better update for you tomorrow on that.”

When asked for his level of concern about how long Lawrence could be out, Pederson said he would have to wait until he spoke with doctors.

Dropping back to pass on third-and-10 from the Bengals 23-yard line with less than six minutes left in the fourth quarter, Lawrence got lower right leg/ankle stepped on by left tackle Walker Little, who was blocking on the play.

Lawrence went to the ground and his right knee twisted under his body, with Cincinnati’s Trey Hendrickson credited with a sack. The third-year quarterback tried to walk off the field but after a couple of steps, went to a knee and slammed his helmet to the ground. The crowd at EverBank Stadium let out a groan when Lawrence went to his knee.

Lawrence was helped off the field and into the locker room by two members of the Jaguars’ staff but was barely able to put any weight on his right leg.

After the game, another NFL Network report stated that Lawrence was smiling with teammates after the game and that his ankle was not wrapped. He did use crutches for support while wearing a walking boot, according to the report.

Jaguars kicker Brandon McManus missed a 48-yard field-goal attempt on the next play that would have broken a 28-28 tie.

For the night, Lawrence completed 22 of 29 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns. He added five carries for 8 yards and another score.

C.J. Beathard entered in place of Lawrence and went 9 of 10 for 63 yards in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Lawrence has 3,004 yards passing, 14 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 94.4 passer rating on the season. He also has 248 yards rushing with four scores on the ground.

The Jaguars (8-4) were aiming to move to the No. 1 playoff spot in the AFC with a win.

The Bengals (6-6) started Jake Browning at quarterback with star Joe Burrow having been lost for the season last month.

Doug Pederson: Jags’ offense limited by ailing QB Trevor Lawrence

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said one of the reasons the offense has struggled this season is because of quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s knee injury.

“One of the things that we haven’t been able to do because of Trevor’s condition with his knee is just move him a little bit more,” Pederson told reporters Wednesday. “Sometimes, you can create things off of that. He’s been limited that way.

“Play-action pass can be an opportunity to shoot the ball down the field on first or second down, the screen game you’ve seen hit a little bit. Those are ways to create some explosives. Sometimes, just drop back and throw it. Just run past and use your speed on the perimeter. Try to take advantage of that while you’re seeing teams do it in different ways.”

Lawrence, 24, hasn’t missed a game since injuring his knee in a Week 6 win over the Indianapolis Colts, and hasn’t appeared on the Jaguars’ injury report since Week 9.

In last Sunday’s 34-3 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, the Jaguars totaled just 221 yards and allowed the 49ers to sack Lawrence five times.

Lawrence, who has completed 67.3 percent of his passes for 2,120 yards and nine touchdowns in nine games, also has six interceptions after throwing just eight last season.

“It’s feeling better,” Lawrence said this week of his knee. “It’s finally getting to where I’m not going to really think about it as much and won’t be as much as an issue. I feel like I’m starting to move pretty fluid and it’s not bothering when I do much. Obviously, it’s still a little bit here or there, it’ll get aggravated.

“But that’s a good question, I’m starting to feel comfortable and I’m happy about that with the progress I’ve made. We’ve been able to protect it the last few weeks and I’m excited to hopefully finally get going and just play normal, move around, all that stuff.”
