Michigan undecided on starting quarterback vs. Michigan State

Slumping Michigan has not named its starting quarterback for Saturday’s rivalry game with Michigan State.

Wolverines coach Sherrone Moore said a decision will be made based on this week’s practices.

“We’ll just see as we go this week,” said Moore, whose team has one touchdown and five turnovers on its last 15 possessions dating back to the second half of an Oct. 5 loss at Washington.

The defending national champions have started three different signal-callers through seven games. The Wolverines’ three losses match their total from the last three seasons combined.

Davis Warren started the first three games, followed by Alex Orji for three starts. Jack Tuttle made his first start in Saturday’s 21-7 setback at then-No. 22 Illinois.

The effort against the Fighting Illini marked the first time Michigan had failed to score in double-digit points since a shutout loss to Notre Dame in 2014.

Warren has completed 48 of 72 passes for 444 yards with two touchdowns and six interceptions this season. Tuttle has thrown for 306 yards on 30-of-50 passing with one TD and two INTs. Orji has connected on 23 of 43 attempts for 148 yards with three TDs and one pick, while also rushing for 124 yards.

The Wolverines (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten) host the Spartans (4-3, 2-2) on Saturday night in Ann Arbor.

Reports: Panthers signing S Vonn Bell, DL Shy Tuttle

The Carolina Panthers have agreed to terms with safety Vonn Bell and defensive tackle Shy Tuttle, according to multiple reports Monday.

Bell, 28, and fellow Bengals safety Jessie Bates are both unrestricted free agents.

Tuttle agreed to a three-year contract worth $19.5 million, ESPN and NFL Network reported, and helps the Panthers in their transition to a 3-4 defense.

Tuttle gets $13 million guaranteed at signing, per the reports.

Both deals can become official on Wednesday, the first day of the new league year.

Bell was a second-round pick in 2016 by the New Orleans Saints. He had a career-high four interceptions last season with the Bengals.

Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo said losing Bell and Bates would be a “dark day” in Cincinnati because of all the contributions they make to the team that go unseen.

Tuttle, 27, signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee in 2019. He recorded 143 tackles, four sacks and 14 passes defensed in 63 games (33 starts) for the Saints.

He’ll likely play nose tackle for the Panthers.

Indiana QB Michael Penix Jr. (shoulder) out indefinitely

Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is sidelined indefinitely after separating his throwing shoulder during Saturday’s loss to Penn State.

There isn’t yet a decision on whether or not Penix needs surgery on the left shoulder.

“I don’t know that you can rule that out at this point,” Hoosiers coach Tom Allen said during his Monday media availability. “There are some unknowns with the rehab process, surgery is definitely not felt to be necessary at this time. … At the same time, we don’t know all those answers at this point.”

Penix was injured in the third quarter when he was sacked by Penn State linebacker Brandon Smith during the 24-0 loss.

All three of Penix’s previous seasons at Indiana ended early due to injuries. He suffered ACL tears in 2018 and 2020 and a collarbone injury in 2019.

Penix has passed for 939 yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions this season as well as adding two rushing touchdowns. He was 10-of-22 passing for 118 yards and one interception before leaving the Penn State game.

Overall, Penix has passed for 4,197 yards, 29 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 20 games (17 starts) with the Hoosiers. He also has six total rushing scores.

Indiana is entering a bye week. Jack Tuttle will be the starting quarterback when the Hoosiers (2-3, 0-2) play host to Michigan State on Oct. 16.

Tuttle has completed 8 of 18 passes for 168 yards, one touchdown and one interception in three games this season. He was 6 of 12 for 77 yards and an interception against Penn State after Penix departed.

Tuttle started two games last season after Penix’s knee injury — a win over Wisconsin in the regular-season finale and a loss to Ole Miss in the Outback Bowl. In three games last season, he passed for 362 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

“He’s highly respected by his teammates and he brings an energy as well,” Allen said of Tuttle. “I thought he gave us a spark even Saturday. I have great confidence in him and he has a great quality to always be ready to play whether it’s no snaps, one snap or 80 snaps.”
