Ravens QB Tyler Huntley headed to Pro Bowl

First, he replaced injured Ravens starter Lamar Jackson.

Now Baltimore backup Tyler Huntley is headed to the Pro Bowl Games to replace injured Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

The invitation to Las Vegas completes a whirlwind couple of months for the undrafted third-year player known as “Snoop,” who will celebrate his 25th birthday on Friday.

After Jackson went down with a knee injury in Week 13, Huntley started four of the last five regular season games (2-2 record) and the wild-card playoff loss at Cincinnati on Jan. 15.

Huntley completed 67.0 percent of his passes in the regular season for 658 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions, and also rushed for 137 yards and a score. He was 17-of-29 passing for 226 yards, two TDs and one pick in the 24-17 loss to the Bengals.

Allen is dealing with an elbow injury.

The reinvented Pro Bowl Games, including a flag football contest, will take place from Thursday through Sunday in Las Vegas.

Reports: Ravens to play both Tyler Huntley, Anthony Brown

With an injured Lamar Jackson out, the Baltimore Ravens reportedly plan to use both backup quarterbacks during Sunday night’s AFC wild-card game against the host Cincinnati Bengals.

Multiple reports said the Ravens will deploy the unusual strategy with Tyler Huntley and Anthony Brown, despite challenges with each.

Huntley, 24, is dealing with tendinitis in his right shoulder as well as a wrist injury. He was listed as questionable on the official injury report.

As a starter in his career, Huntley is 3-5. His injured shoulder hampered his performance this season, with Huntley completing just three passes of at least 20 yards in four starts.

When asked at Friday’s practice if he’s ready to return to the field, Huntley reported he has “no nerves.”

“Just excited to get back out there after missing one week,” Huntley said. “It’s a privilege to go out there and play football and I appreciate it.”

Meanwhile, the Ravens’ other backup quarterback, Brown, 24, is an undrafted rookie who’s made only one career start, last Sunday’s 27-16 loss to the Bengals. In that game, he threw for 286 yards with two interceptions and a fumble.

The two QBs have different strengths, with Brown the better passer while Huntley is more proficient at using the same run-oriented offense as Jackson.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh has been tight-lipped about the situation, declining to name a starter after Friday’s practice.

“We’ll see when the time comes,” Harbaugh said.

Jackson, who was ruled out for a sixth straight game with a left knee injury, “suffered a PCL Grade 2 sprain, on the borderline of a strain 3” and his knee “remains unstable,” according to Jackson’s own tweet on Thursday.

The Ravens enter Sunday night’s matchup against the defending AFC champion Bengals as a heavy underdog.

Lamar Jackson still not practicing, Tyler Huntley throws for Ravens

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is trending toward missing his sixth straight game after he didn’t participate in practice on Thursday.

Fellow quarterback Tyler Huntley, however, resumed throwing in the open portion of practice on Thursday, three days ahead of Sunday’s AFC wild-card game at Cincinnati. Huntley is dealing with tendinitis in his right throwing shoulder as well as a wrist injury.

Baltimore has been without Jackson since Dec. 4 due to a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his knee. Jackson, 26, has not been available for football activities, including 17 straight on-field practices, since the injury. The typical recovery time for the injury is four to six weeks.

Multiple reports indicate Jackson is limited by swelling, which impacts his lateral mobility and straight-line speed.

Huntley stepped in for Jackson in the first quarter of the Dec. 4 game against the Denver Broncos and likely would get the call against the Bengals on Sunday. He started the four subsequent games.

The Ravens beat the Broncos, 10-9, in their Week 13 game and haven’t cleared 17 points since losing Jackson.

Jackson joined cornerback Brandon Stephens (illness), long snapper Nick Moore (illness) and offensive lineman Trystan Colon (undisclosed) in failing to participate in practice on Thursday.

Guard Ben Powers, left tackle Ronnie Stanley, defensive end Calais Campbell, and outside linebackers Jason Pierre-Paul and Justin Houston participated in practice on Thursday, one day after observing a rest day.

Running back Gus Edwards (concussion) was spotted wearing a red non-contact jersey and a protective guardian cap on his helmet during Thursday’s session.

Baltimore dropped the regular-season finale to the Bengals, 27-16, and has lost three of the past four entering the playoffs. Anthony Brown started and played the whole game in place of Huntley last week. The Ravens beat the Bengals, 19-17, on Oct. 9.

Ravens rookie Anthony Brown to start at QB

Baltimore Ravens backup quarterback Anthony Brown will make his first career start on Sunday against the host Cincinnati Bengals, with the team making Tyler Huntley inactive.

Huntley started the past four games with Lamar Jackson continuing to deal with a lingering injury.

NFL Network reported that the Ravens are sitting Huntley to give his shoulder and wrist injuries time to recover for the wild-card round of the playoffs next weekend, just in case Jackson can’t return.

Veteran Brett Hundley will back up Brown.

The Ravens (10-6) have clinched a playoff spot but have something on the line against the Bengals (11-4). Should both the Ravens and Los Angeles Chargers win, the NFL will conduct a coin flip to determine whether the Ravens or Bengals will host a wild-card game between the two teams. The NFL owners approved the unique solution because the Bengals won’t play a full 17-game season.

The game between the Bengals and Bills was canceled on Monday following the serious medical situation involving Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin, who went into cardiac arrest on the field.

He continues to recover in a Cincinnati hospital.

Brown, 24, played in Week 14 against the Pittsburgh Steelers after Huntley sustained a concussion. He completed 3 of 5 passes for 16 yards. As a runner, he carried the ball three times and lost 5 yards.

He is an undrafted rookie free agent. He played three seasons at Boston College and then two at Oregon. In 2021, he threw for 2,989 yards, ran for 658 yards and registered a combined 28 touchdowns for the Ducks.

Battered backup QB Tyler Huntley to start vs. Falcons

Tyler Huntley is preparing to start in subfreezing temperatures while the Ravens wait for Lamar Jackson’s knee to heal.

Jackson has missed the past two games with a PCL strain and isn’t ready to play, but Huntley is working through a right shoulder issue that put him on the injury report this week.

The Ravens haven’t had a TD pass this month, the last score by air coming from Jackson on Nov. 27 at Jacksonville.

Baltimore is 27th in the NFL in passing and lost at Cleveland last week 13-3 in a game that ended in frigid conditions with driving snow.

Huntley said he’ll stick with his approach of keeping 20 heat packets in the handwarmer pouch around his waist on Saturday when the Ravens (9-5) host the Atlanta Falcons (5-9).

“They keep my fingers warm — I wish I had some on my toes,” Huntley said on Thursday.

Huntley, who threw in Thursday’s practice, said he has mild soreness in his shoulder, but nothing more significant than a similar issue in OTAs.

Since Huntley entered the starting lineup, the Ravens have leaned heavily on the running game. J.K. Dobbins has 28 carries for 245 yards in those two games.

“We just have to find ways to score touchdowns,” Huntley said.

Ravens QB Tyler Huntley clears concussion protocol

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley cleared concussion protocol, coach John Harbaugh said Thursday.

The Ravens (9-4) have ruled out Lamar Jackson for this Saturday’s game against the Cleveland Browns (5-8), ESPN reported.

Huntley expects to be on the field in Cleveland as Jackson continues to recover from a knee injury.

“I don’t think I had a concussion, but definitely the protocols, they were doing their job and making sure I was safe,” Huntley said, per ESPN. “Clearly, I’m safe enough to play this week.”

Huntley started last Sunday but exited in the third quarter of the 16-14 victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Undrafted rookie Anthony Brown finished out the game for the Ravens.

Huntley, 24, has completed 35 of 44 passes for 275 yards with an interception in three games this season. He also has rushed for 72 yards with a touchdown.

Report: Ravens QB Lamar Jackson could return in Week 16

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson could be out until Week 16 due to a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, ESPN reported Sunday. That would put his return on Christmas Eve at home against the Atlanta Falcons.

Jackson sustained the injury last Sunday in the Ravens’ win over the Denver Broncos.

The Ravens (8-4) are scheduled to visit the Pittsburgh Steelers (5-7) on Sunday, leaving backup Tyler Huntley to start.

Jackson is crucial to the Ravens offense. Last season, he missed the final four games because of an ankle injury, and Baltimore was 0-4 in his absence.

The league MVP in 2019, Jackson has completed 62.3 percent of his passes this season for 2,242 yards with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He’s the team’s leading rusher, running for 764 yards with three scores.

The 24-year-old Huntley appeared in seven games (four starts) last season and complete 64.9 percent of his passes for 1,081 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions. He ran for an additional 294 yards and two TDs.

Huntley completed 27 of 32 passes for 187 yards with an interception against the Broncos after replacing Jackson. He rushed for 41 yards and scored the game’s only touchdown with 28 seconds left in a 10-9 win.

The Ravens, who have an identical record as the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC North, have another key road game next Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.

Ravens plan for QB Tyler Huntley to start vs. Steelers

The Baltimore Ravens are turning to quarterback Tyler Huntley in Sunday’s game against the host Pittsburgh Steelers, who have won four consecutive games in the rivalry.

Huntley went 0-2 against the Steelers last season, including a 16-13 loss in overtime in which the Steelers picked off two passes.

Ravens starting quarterback Lamar Jackson, who was listed as doubtful on Friday, did not practice all week after sustaining a knee injury in last Sunday’s 10-9 win over the Denver Broncos. Jackson sprained the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and could be sidelined up to three weeks, ESPN reported on Monday.

“It looks like it’s going to be Tyler on Sunday,” Harbaugh said after Friday’s practice.

Huntley, 24, relieved Jackson and completed 27 of 32 passes for 187 yards with an interception against the Broncos.

“It’s really hard to replace a guy like Lamar,” Steelers defensive end Chris Wormley said. “He’s been in the system for a couple of years now. He can do some similar things, but I think Lamar is in a class of his own with what he can do with his legs, throwing the ball, just his command of the offense.

Jackson, 25, is crucial to the Ravens offense. Last season, he missed the final four games because of an ankle injury, and Baltimore was 0-4 in his absence.

The league MVP in 2019, Jackson has completed 62.3 percent of his passes this season for 2,242 yards with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He’s the team’s leading rusher, running for 764 yards with three touchdowns.

The Ravens listed linebackers Patrick Queen (thigh), Kristian Welch (concussion), Del’Shawn Phillips (quad) and offensive lineman Patrick Mekari (toe) as questionable despite all four players participating fully in practice on Friday. Guard Kevin Zeitler (knee) also is questionable after being limited in Friday’s session.

Cornerback Daryl Worley (hamstring) did not practice all week and was ruled out for the contest.

Ravens sign QB Brett Hundley to practice squad

The Baltimore Ravens signed veteran quarterback Brett Hundley to their practice squad on Monday in the aftermath of starter Lamar Jackson’s knee injury.

Hundley’s agent confirmed the move on social media.

Jackson left Sunday’s game against Denver in the first quarter with a sprained knee. Ravens coach John Harbaugh said after the game that Jackson’s injury is not season-ending but will be a “number of days to weeks.”

On the final play of the first quarter, Jackson took a six-yard loss when he was sacked by Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper. Jackson then went to the medical tent. Before the sack, Jackson completed 3-of-4 passes for 11 yards and also gained nine yards on his only carry.

The Ravens trailed 3-0 when Jackson exited.

Tyler Huntley relieved Jackson as he did for the final four games of the 2021 season, when Jackson was sidelined with an ankle injury.

Huntley threw for 187 yards and an interception in the win over the Broncos. He was the Ravens’ leading rusher, carrying 10 times for 41 yards, including the game-winning touchdown on a 2-yard run with 28 seconds left.

Hundley, 29, is 3-6 lifetime as a starter, stepping in for Green Bay for nine starts in 2017. He’s thrown for 1,902 yards and nine touchdowns against 13 interceptions in 18 career games, including the nine starts. He spent time with Baltimore over the summer.

Huntley has appeared in 11 career games, including the four starts from 2021, and has thrown for 1,283 yards with no TDs and an interception.

The Ravens play at rival Pittsburgh this week.
