Cowboys G Tyler Smith inactive vs. Commanders

The Dallas Cowboys will be without both of their starting guards on Sunday after declaring Tyler Smith inactive versus the host Washington Commanders.

Smith, the Cowboys’ left guard, was questionable to play against the Commanders despite missing two practices this week with ankle and knee injuries before returning for a limited session on Friday.

Right guard Zack Martin has been dealing with ankle and shoulder injuries and didn’t practice at all this week before initially being listed as doubtful to play on Friday. The seven-time All-Pro and nine-time Pro Bowl selection officially was downgraded to out on Saturday.

T.J. Bass and Brock Hoffman likely will start at guard for Dallas (3-7), which also will be without cornerbacks Trevon Diggs and Caelen Carson, running back Deuce Vaughn, tight end Jake Ferguson and defensive end Tyrus Wheat.

As for the Commanders (7-4), cornerbacks Marshon Lattimore and Emmanuel Forbes, quarterback Jeff Driskel, linebacker Dominique Hampton and guard Chris Paul have been ruled inactive.

Report: Cowboys’ Tyron Smith wants to return for 14th season

Eight-time Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith does not plan to retire and hopes to return for a 14th season with the Cowboys in 2024, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Smith, 33, is scheduled to become a free agent in March.

Including 13 in 2023, Smith has started in all 161 games he has played since Dallas drafted him ninth overall in 2011.

Returning to the Cowboys is no guarantee. Smith has not played a full season since 2015 due to injuries and Dallas drafted his heir apparent, Tyler Smith, in the first round in 2022.

Head coach Mike McCarthy addressed the veteran lineman’s situation at his season-ending press conference last month.

“I think the biggest thing for Tyron is, talking about the path of the season and the training plan that was in place for him, this is clearly his best season that I have experienced with him since 2020,” McCarthy said. “So, he felt good about that. I think the fact that he’s not going into the offseason with offseason surgeries is a plus. We’ll continue to talk as we move forward.”

Cowboys add LT Tyron Smith (ankle) to injury report

Left tackle Tyron Smith was added to the injury report by the Cowboys on Thursday, leaving Dallas without both starters on the left side of the offensive line.

The Cowboys play the New York Giants on Sunday night and Smith could still be ready despite missing practice with an ankle injury.

Head coach Mike McCarthy said Thursday that left guard Tyler Smith, limited to work with trainers this week, should be available Sunday night. McCarthy said Tyler Smith plans to practice Saturday and would be ready to start a day later.

Tyron Smith, 32, has played 17 total games the past three seasons due to injuries. He played in four regular-season games in 2022, returning late in the season from a training camp injury.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was intercepted twice in his only game versus New York in 2022. But he has won 10 starts in a row against the Giants with a TD-to-INT ratio of 22-5.

Safety Donovan Wilson (calf) missed practice Thursday because of a “positive personal matter,” McCarthy said.

Defensive end Sam Williams (toe) was limited to working with the rehab group.

Free agent LT Jason Peters, 40, meets with Cowboys

Free agent left tackle Jason Peters met with the Dallas Cowboys on Friday.

Owner Jerry Jones said he planned to meet with the 40-year-old veteran following Peters’ physical exams.

Earlier this week, Jones insisted he was comfortable entering the season with untested 21-year-old rookie Tyler Smith at left tackle.

Peters, with 218 career NFL starts under his belt, could serve as a mentor for the 2022 first-round pick at a critical position.

Peters could also provide needed depth with veteran starter Tyron Smith on injured reserve with a knee injury.

Peters started 15 games for the Chicago Bears in 2021 after earning nine Pro Bowl selections in 16 seasons with the Buffalo Bills (2004-08) and Philadelphia Eagles (2009-20).

Undrafted out of Arkansas in 2004, Peters has started 218 of his 228 career NFL games. He won a ring with the Eagles in Super Bowl LII and was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 2010s.

The Cowboys open the season at home Sept. 11 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Reports: Cowboys sign first-rounder Tyler Smith to $13.38M deal

First-round draft pick Tyler Smith signed a four-year $13.38 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys, multiple outlets reported Friday.

The deal for the offensive lineman is fully guaranteed and contains a fifth-year team option, per the reports.

Smith took part in the team’s minicamp on Friday and played at left guard.

The Cowboys took Smith with the No. 24 overall pick in last month’s NFL draft. And while some observers thought that slot was too high for the Tulsa product, Dallas executive vice president Stephen Jones disagreed.

“I just think his upside is tremendous,” Jones said on the PFT PM Podcast after the draft. “He played at a smaller school there at Tulsa. He only played in 18 games at Tulsa. But we just feel like his skill set really lends to him having an opportunity to be a top, top left tackle at some point.”
