No. 5 Miami out to deny No. 18 USF third straight upset

No. 18 South Florida is one of the biggest surprises in college football, but faces its toughest challenge yet on Saturday at No. 5 Miami in Miami Gardens, Fla.

The game wasn’t a Top 25 matchup until the Bulls (2-0) scored their second consecutive victory over a ranked opponent when they shocked then-No. 13 Florida 18-16 in Gainesville last Saturday.

USF opened the season with a convincing 34-7 home victory over Boise State, which was ranked No. 25 at the time.

It was the first time the Bulls beat ranked opponents in back-to-back weeks and the first time they beat two ranked opponents in the same season since 2009.

USF coach Alex Golesh is trying to keep his team from being distracted by the added hype after its strong start.

“I think there’s still so much to play for, there’s so much still ahead of us,” Golesh said this week. “I told the guys last week (after Boise State) and I truly believe this: There’s going to be so many people who are going to tell them how good they are now, how good we are, how good I am. When you’re process-driven, you just go right back to work and you worry about Sunday, you worry about Monday.”

Even before USF’s recent rise, the Hurricanes (2-0) anticipated a tough challenge after the Bulls kept last year’s game close for a half before Miami pulled away 50-15 in Tampa. Miami leads the all-time series 6-1 with the Bulls scoring their lone victory in 2010 at Miami.

Miami’s respect for USF stems in large part from Byrum Brown’s skills as one of the nation’s best quarterbacks. Brown has completed 39 of 60 passes for 473 yards and a touchdown and has 109 rushing yards and two scores on 31 carries.

Brown did not throw or run for a touchdown in last year’s game against Miami, but completed 19 of 30 passes for 274 yards and did not throw an interception. He also caught a 12-yard touchdown pass.

Brown and Carson Beck, who will make his third start for the Hurricanes, trained together in the offseason.

“He’s a good kid. He’s obviously had a lot of success this year. Hopefully he does well the rest of the year,” Beck said on Tuesday. “I’m rooting for him, but this game hopefully our defense comes in and attacks him.”

Beck is coming off a record-breaking performance in a 45-3 win over Bethune-Cookman, completing his first 15 passes to top the school record set by Vinny Testaverde in 1986. Beck has thrived in Miami’s offense, completing 42 of 54 attempts for 472 yards and four touchdowns without throwing an interception.

Freshman Malachi Toney has emerged as one of Beck’s top targets with 12 catches for 162 yards while CJ Daniels has 119 yards and three touchdowns on 10 catches.

Keshaun Singleton has caught seven passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bulls’ offense.

The Bulls and the Hurricanes each have produced four turnovers without committing one. They are tied for the fifth-best turnover margin in the country among teams yet to turn the ball over.

No. 13 Florida, USF undefeated ahead of rare Sunshine State matchup

The University of South Florida and No. 13 University of Florida football teams are undefeated heading into Week 2, but the two schools arrived there in different fashion.

The pair of Sunshine State programs will meet Saturday afternoon in Gainesville, Fla. for the fourth time ever, with Florida having won all three matchups.

The Gators did what they were supposed to Saturday night in the Swamp: Thrash visiting Long Island University thoroughly, which they did 55-0 in a game that featured quarterback DJ Lagway tossing three touchdown passes and backup Tramell Jones Jr. adding two.

Florida held advantages of 28-2 in first downs and 451-86 in total yardage against the FCS school.

On offense, 15 Gators caught passes from Lagway and Jones, and while Eugene Wilson III’s numbers were miniscule — five receptions for minus-4 yards and a TD — the wide receiver was happy to be back after hip surgery.

“Whenever I feel like I’m kind of going into a dark space or a quiet spot, I always just kind of lean on my dad,” Wilson said of his father Eugene Wilson Jr., who won two Super Bowls with the New England Patriots. “He’s always going to keep my head straight and make sure I ain’t fall in too deep.”

A 5 1/2-point underdog at home last Thursday in its season-opener against then-No. 25 Boise State, USF stunned the Broncos by spotting them a first-quarter touchdown, then steamrolled them with 34 unanswered points in a rousing 34-7 victory.

“It’s a good, really, really good football team, and I’m impressed with the film of week one,” Florida coach Billy Napier said of the cross-state foe. “Obviously, Boise is a very well-established playoff team, and for (USF) to dominate the game and have control of the game from the jump, I thought it was (an) impressive start to the season.”

Senior quarterback Byrum Brown played a strong game, going 16 for 24 for 210 yards and rushing for 43 yards on 14 carries. Tennessee transfer receiver Chas Nimrod had 96 receiving yards while Keshaun Singleton posted 93 and a TD.

While the offensive production difference in yardage was just six — Boise State’s 378, the Bulls’ 372 — the home side limited the Broncos’ vaunted ground game (38 carries for 122 yards, 3.2 per rush) and forced and recovered three fumbles.

A 6-foot-3, 231-pound senior from Raleigh, N.C., Brown went to coach Alex Golesh and asked to carry the ball after a couple of fruitless drives early on.

“I give Byrum a lot of credit, because he came over and said, ‘Coaches, run me a little bit.’ Then I watched him put his shoulder down twice,” said Golesh, who is 15-12 in his third season coaching the Tampa team. “I was like, ‘Man, yeah, he’s got it.’ Got into a groove. I think he felt really good.”

The Bulls will need much more of that effort Saturday in the late afternoon start.

They are 0-3 against the Gators, though the most recent encounter on Sept. 17, 2022, was the tightest.

USF kicker Spencer Shrader missed a game-tying 49-yard field goal with 23 seconds left as the Gators and quarterback Anthony Richardson edged the visiting Bulls 31-28 in what was almost a disastrous second-half collapse for the SEC school.

Fake-punt TD helps USF cruise past No. 25 Boise State

Locklan Hewlett threw a touchdown pass to Keshaun Singleton on a fake punt to help South Florida notch a convincing 34-7 season-opening rout over No. 25 Boise State on Thursday night at Tampa.

The stunning trick play gave the Bulls a 10-point lead in the middle of the third quarter and was part of 34 unanswered points as USF halted an 18-game losing streak against ranked teams. Byrum Brown rushed for two touchdowns and finished 16-for-24 passing for 210 yards to pace the Bulls.

Maddux Madsen completed 25 of 46 passes for 225 yards and one touchdown for the Broncos, who reached the College Football Playoff quarterfinals last season. Chris Marshall caught a touchdown pass for Boise State.

Sire Gaines rushed for 44 yards on nine carries and Malik Sherrod gained 27 yards on 11 attempts for the Broncos, who are trying to replace star running back Ashton Jeanty. The 2024 Heisman Trophy runner-up racked up 2,601 on the ground last season.

USF led 10-7 when the momentum-changing play occurred on fourth-and-6 from the Boise State 45-yard line in the third quarter.

The Bulls went into punt formation and Hewlett came in from the sideline. The true freshman quarterback lined up as the punter and the Boise State players and coaches didn’t notice.

Hewlett caught the snap and looked to his right and threw deep toward Singleton, who caught the ball at the Broncos 19-yard line and broke three tackles en route to giving the Bulls a 17-7 lead with 8:18 left in the third quarter.

Boise State failed from fourth-and 2 from the USF 23 with 2:47 remaining in the third. The Bulls answered by moving 77 yards on three plays, the big one being Brown’s 55-yard completion to Chas Nimrod. USF then hurried to the line and Brown kept the ball and went around the left side to score from the 15 and make it 24-7 with 1:44 left.

The Broncos came up empty on fourth-and-7 from their own 43 on their next possession. USF then drove 43 yards on five plays with Cartevious Newton crashing through two tacklers on an 8-yard scoring run to make it a 24-point lead with 13:26 left in the contest.

USF’s Nico Gramatica tacked on a 33-yard field goal with 3:29 left.

The Broncos struck first when Madsen hit Marshall on a 6-yard touchdown pass with 1:10 left in the opening quarter.

USF got on the board on Gramatica’s 52-yard field goal with 12:39 left in the first half.

Six-plus minutes later, Brown dropped back to pass before scampering 23 yards through a big hole for the touchdown that put the Bulls on top for good.

Former South Florida coach Jim Leavitt facing battery, theft charges

Former South Florida football coach Jim Leavitt was arrested on Monday evening in St. Petersburg, Fla., on a felony grand theft charge and misdemeanor charges of simple battery and domestic battery.

Leavitt, 68, grabbed his ex-girlfriend by the arm as she tried to walk away and took her Louis Vuitton purse, clutch bag and wallet and would not give them back as she attempted to leave, according to arrest affidavits filed in Pinellas County, Fla. Leavitt admitted to authorities that he withheld the items, which are valued between $5,000 and $10,000.

According to a separate affidavit, Leavitt shoved a man in the chest a few minutes later. Leavitt told authorities that the man “walked into his right hand, making contact with the victim’s chest,” per the affidavit.

Leavitt was USF’s first football coach, hired in 1996 and leading the Bulls for 13 seasons (1997-2009). His teams went 95-57 — including the first four as an NCAA Division I-AA independent (1997-2000) before moving up to Division I-A — and went 3-2 in bowl games. The Bulls were ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation (2007).

USF fired Leavitt in January 2010 after its investigation found that during halftime of a game against Louisville, he grabbed one of his players by the throat, slapped him in the face and later lied about it.

Leavitt at the time called the allegations “absolutely false” and later sued the university for wrongful termination. The lawsuit was settled for $2.75 million, per an ESPN report.

He is scheduled to be inducted into the USF Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2025 on Oct. 2.

Leavitt served as linebackers coach with the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers (2011-14) before returning to the college ranks. He was the defensive coordinator at Colorado (2015-16), Oregon (2017-18), Florida Atlantic (2020) and SMU (2021), as well as a defensive analyst at Florida State (2019).

No. 25 Boise State to feature 1-2 RB punch at USF

No. 25 Boise State is out to show there’s plenty of life in the program after Ashton Jeanty.

Moving on from the Heisman Trophy runner-up who recorded one of the top running back seasons in college football history is no easy task, but the Broncos start the process Thursday night when they play South Florida at Raymond James Stadium at Tampa, Fla.

Jeanty’s spectacular 2,601-yard rushing season helped the Broncos (12-2 in 2024) reach the College Football Playoff where they lost 31-14 to Penn State in the quarterfinals.

Jeanty’s signature long runs and leaps over defenders can now be found on NFL television outlets, while Malik Sherrod and Sire Gaines try to lessen the impact of his loss.

Sherrod transferred from Fresno State and is in his sixth season of college football. He had a stellar 2023 season with 966 rushing yards and six scores before being limited to four games last season due to injury.

Now he’ll be part of the one-two punch with Gaines, a redshirt freshman who had 156 yards in three games last season before sustaining a season-ending injury.

Broncos coach Spencer Danielson insists his team will still run the football.

“Just because Ashton isn’t here, that does not change,” Danielson told reporters. “We will run the football here, we will establish a run game on offense and first and foremost on defense, stop the run. That’s championship football.”

Quarterback Maddux Madsen is back after passing for 3,018 yards, 23 touchdowns and six interceptions in 2024.

The Broncos are also preparing for the humidity on the West Coast of Florida.

“We don’t control the environment and how many tickets get sold,” Danielson said. “Like how many fans are there? Is there going to be lighting, rain, hot, humid? We prepare for all things.

“As a coach, I’ve got to make sure our players are ready for the battle that is waiting for them. We don’t control the environment, but we do control how prepared we are.”

USF (7-6 in 2024) has won consecutive bowl games in coach Alex Golesh’s first two seasons.

But the Bulls are opening this campaign with a very arduous trio of games — the Boise State game is followed by road games at No. 15 Florida and No. 10 Miami.

Yes, Golesh actively sought the tough gauntlet.

“People were like, ‘What are you guys thinking?’” Golesh told reporters. “And I told them, ‘Those guys have to play South Florida.’ And I’ll tell you the same thing now. Boise State has to come to Tampa and play South Florida at Ray-Jay on a Thursday night on national TV in the heat.

“For who we are, for us to take the next step, we’ve got to go win a marquee game. That happens to be the first one. It’s right there for us.”

Bulls star quarterback Byrum Brown is healthy after being lost to a lower-leg injury in late September last season. He missed the rest of the regular season but did get in for two snaps during a five-overtime 41-39 victory over San Jose State in the Hawaii Bowl on Christmas Eve.

In 2023, Brown had a top-notch season. He passed for 3,292 yards and 26 touchdowns against 11 interceptions and also rushed for 809 yards and 11 scores. He’s eager to regain his star status.

“I’m ready. I’m more than ready,” Brown told reporters. “I can’t wait to get out there and go. I feel with the talent we have on this team, we have great things ahead.”

USF-Memphis game moved to Orlando after Milton

Already moved on the calendar because of Hurricane Milton, the upcoming game between South Florida and Memphis is also changing locations.

The American Athletic Conference announced Thursday that the game would be moved from Tampa to Orlando, at Camping World Stadium. Earlier this week, the game was moved from its original Friday slot to Saturday. Kickoff will remain at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Orlando will now host two games on Saturday, as UCF will face Cincinnati in a Big 12 game at the Knights’ FBC Mortgage Stadium.

Milton made landfall in the Tampa area on Wednesday evening and tore through much of Central Florida. As of Thursday night, at least a dozen people had been killed by the storm and more than 2 million remained without power. The storm also ripped most of the roof off Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Memphis, South Florida, UTSA, Tulane pledge to stay in American

The next spin on the conference realignment carousel won’t include Memphis, South Florida, UTSA or Tulane.

The American Athletic Conference released a statement Monday saying those four schools are committed to remaining in the league, following reports that they could be targets of the rebuilding Pac-12 Conference.

At the same time, all 15 member institutions published graphics on social media that plotted their locations on a map, with one word prominently featured: “Committed.”

“We are the American Athletic Conference. A conference that prioritizes student-athlete welfare, has proud academic institutions, produces fierce competition at the highest level, and has outstanding linear and direct-to-consumer national media partners,” the AAC’s statement read.

“Together, we are committed to continuing to build the American brand, exploring new opportunities for exposure and value, and developing innovative economic resources — all in service of our student-athletes.”

The statement acknowledged that some of its member institutions received interest from “other conferences.” Though the schools weren’t named, the corresponding social media post featured the logos of Memphis, South Florida, UTSA and Tulane across the top.

The AAC said it was “in our individual and collective best interests to uphold our commitment to each other.”

The Pac-12 began a regrowth of sorts two weeks ago when it was announced the league would add Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State from the Mountain West in 2026. Joining Oregon State and Washington State, that would bring the league to six members, with eight the minimum required for the league to be recognized as an FBS conference once again.

Memphis, Tulane and others were reported to be among the Pac-12’s next targets.

“The landscape of college athletics has shifted dramatically in the past few years,” the University of Memphis said in its own statement. “With that, our focus has remained on ensuring our student-athletes are given the best possible environment to perform their sports and academics at the highest level. After considering other potential options, we have decided our current partnership with the American Athletic Conference is in the best interest of our student-athletes and the future of our University.”

The AAC has 14 football-playing members after losing SMU to the ACC but adding Army ahead of the 2024 season. Army and Navy are football-only members, while Wichita State plays most of its sports in the AAC but does not field a football team.

Jalen Milroe accounts for 4 TDs as No. 4 Alabama tops USF

Jalen Milroe passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two to help No. 4 Alabama slide past South Florida 42-16 on Saturday night in nonconference play at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Jam Miller rushed for 140 yards and one score, Justice Haynes added a rushing touchdown and Kobe Prentice and Ryan Williams each caught touchdown passes for the Crimson Tide (2-0).

Milroe completed 17 of 27 passes for 199 yards for Alabama, which scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to break open a close affair.

Byrum Brown completed 15 of 35 passes for 103 yards and rushed for 108 yards on 23 carries for South Florida (1-1). Ta’Ron Keith rushed for a touchdown for the Bulls, who were outgained 393-309.

South Florida trailed by just five past the midway point of the fourth quarter before the Crimson Tide pulled away with three touchdowns in a span of 4:13.

Last season, South Florida gave Alabama a stern battle in Tampa, Fla. That contest was a one-score margin until the Crimson Tide scored a touchdown with 33 seconds left for a 17-3 victory.

This year, the Bulls moved within 14-13 on Keith’s 2-yard scoring run with 9:35 left in the third quarter.

The Crimson Tide increased their lead to eight when Milroe tossed a 16-yard scoring pass to Prentice with 10:04 left in the contest.

John Cannon kicked a 22-yard field with 6:45 remaining to bring South Florida within 21-16.

It took just three plays for the Crimson Tide to push their cushion to 12. Williams, the 17-year-old star freshman, caught a short pass from Milroe and turned it into a 43-yard score down the left sideline with 5:50 left in the contest.

Miller added a 56-yard run to make it 35-16 with 2:30 remaining, and Haynes scored on a 29-yard run with 1:37 to go.

South Florida outrushed the Crimson Tide 108-34 in the first half but had to settle for two field goals from Cannon and trailed 14-6 at the break.

Cannon kicked a 34-yard field goal on the first possession of the game for the Bulls.

Milroe put Alabama ahead on a 10-yard scoring run with 5:08 left in the opening quarter. Cannon booted a 25-yarder to move South Florida within 7-6 with 9:45 left in the first half.

Milroe rushed for a 5-yard scoring run with 3:28 left in the half to give Alabama a 14-6 lead.

South Florida throttles Syracuse in Boca Raton Bowl

Byrum Brown threw three touchdown passes and two South Florida players scored on long fumble returns as the Bulls trounced Syracuse 45-0 on Thursday night in the Boca Raton Bowl in Boca Raton, Fla.

Brown twice found Sean Atkins for a touchdown as part of a 19-of-26 passing performance in which he threw for 214 yards without an interception. Atkins finished with six catches for 93 yards, while Brown also registered a team-high 64 rushing yards for the Bulls (7-6).

The Orange (6-7) played without their top two quarterbacks due to injuries. Freshman Braden Davis made his first college start and finished 6 of 13 for 84 yards. The team also ran much of their offense out of a wildcat formation that featured running back LeQuint Allen (20 carries for 2 yards) and tight end Dan Villari (11 rushes for 37 yards and 4-of-11 passing for 55 yards).

Syracuse went 1 for 17 on third downs and had four turnovers in losing its bowl game for the second straight season.

After the teams exchanged punts to begin the contest, South Florida marched 64 yards on 10 plays, capped by Brown’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Atkins in the back of the end zone.

The Bulls doubled their lead late in the first quarter on Aamaris Brown’s 64-yard fumble return for a touchdown. The Orange were attempting a field goal, but they botched the hold, leading to the fumble.

Early in the second quarter, Byrum Brown found Khafre Brown deep over the middle for a 31-yard score, making it 21-0. John Cannon added a 40-yard field goal with 2:40 left in the period.

The cherry on top of the first-half uprising was Tramel Logan’s 61-yard fumble return with nine seconds left. Daquan Evans sacked Davis on the play, and Logan made the recovery.

Byrum Brown’s 35-yard pass to a wide-open Atkins made it 38-0 early in the third quarter. Nay’Quan Wright’s 2-yard touchdown run accounted for the only points of the fourth quarter as South Florida rolled to its first bowl win since 2017.

Syracuse runs into USF, Boca Raton Bowl thinking ground game

Without the coach and quarterback who helped the Orange reach the postseason, Syracuse stomps forward to face South Florida in the Boca Raton Bowl on Thursday.

The Orange (6-6) fired coach Dino Babers last month near the end of his eighth season at Syracuse. His temporary replacement was Nunzio Campanile, who defeated Wake Forest in the regular-season finale to make the Orange bowl-eligible, before the program hired Fran Brown as its next head coach earlier this month.

It’ll be Campanile who will be guiding Syracuse in Thursday’s clash in Boca Raton, Fla. He will have to defeat the Bulls without quarterback Garrett Shrader, who underwent shoulder surgery after passing for three touchdowns and running for another in the win over Wake Forest.

“It was important for me to get our team to a bowl game,” the senior quarterback said. “I would have (gotten surgery) earlier in the season, but I wanted to wait until we got bowl-eligible. This team has too much talent and works too hard not to play a 13th game.”

In Shrader’s absence, the Orange could opt for backup Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, who threw three touchdowns and six interceptions in limited action this season. Or the team could revisit its creative wildcat offense that it used while Shrader was injured late in the regular season.

In either event, the Orange are looking forward to playing in a bowl game for the second straight season. Previously, they had not played in back-to-back bowl games since 2012 and 2013.

“You have two teams that are trending in the right direction,” Campanile said, “and I just think it’s a really exciting opportunity. … It should be a really fun, entertaining game.”

The Bulls (6-6) showed drastic improvement this season under first-year coach Alex Golesh. The team had won a total of four games in the previous three seasons combined and now will play in their first bowl game since 2018.

“To get here in year one and to continue to lay a foundation for what we’re building in Tampa, it’s absolutely huge for us,” said Golesh, whose squad also became bowl-eligible by winning its regular-season finale. USF trounced Charlotte 48-14 in that contest behind four passing touchdowns and a rushing score from Byrum Brown.

The Bulls’ defense was among the worst in the nation in points allowed per game (34.9) and yards allowed per game (455.3). So, they’ll be banking on their dynamic offense and hope that their defense can contain Orange running back LeQuint Allen, who ran for 1,062 yards (including 100-plus yards in five of the last six games).

Also, USF will be relying on its expected home-field advantage.

“For us to be in our home state, playing against a really good football team, I would hope there’s a bunch of green and gold in the stands,” Golesh said. “It’ll feel like a home game in that regard.”

The teams have met 10 times previously, all between 2005 and 2016. South Florida won eight of those matchups with all eight of those victories coming by at least 14 points.
