Ravens claim Sammy Watkins; WR Devin Duvernay hurts foot at practice

The Baltimore Ravens are turning to veteran Sammy Watkins to bolster their depth after another wide receiver reportedly encountered injury trouble.

The Ravens claimed Watkins off waivers from the Green Bay Packers on Tuesday, the same day receiver Devin Duvernay injured his right foot in practice.

Reporters at the Ravens’ facility noted that Duvernay limped off the field early at practice Tuesday. NFL Network later reported that Baltimore has concern Duvernay’s injury is “significant” with tests scheduled to determine the severity.

Duvernay, a 2020 third-round pick by Baltimore, had 37 receptions for 407 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games this season.

Rashod Bateman, who suffered a Lisfranc injury in late October, was already lost to season-ending surgery.

The Ravens signed veteran DeSean Jackson to occupy a spot on the depth chart now turn to Watkins, who played for the organization last season.

Watkins became available when Green Bay waived him Monday before its 24-12 home win over the Los Angeles Rams.

The former No. 4 overall pick had just 13 catches for 206 yards and no touchdowns in nine appearances (three starts) for the Packers. In nine NFL seasons with the Buffalo Bills (2014-16), Los Angeles Rams (2017), Kansas City Chiefs (2018-20), Ravens (2021) and Packers, Watkins has caught 361 passes for 5,265 yards and 34 touchdowns in 108 games.

Baltimore (9-5) is also hobbled on offense by a knee injury to former MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson. It’s unclear if he will return in time for Saturday’s home game against the Atlanta Falcons. He did not practice Tuesday.

The Ravens have scored just 29 points in the past three games (9.7 per game) but went 2-1 anyway. They trail the Cincinnati Bengals by one game for the AFC North lead.

Packers activate WR Sammy Watkins, place Randall Cobb on IR

The Green Bay Packers activated Sammy Watkins off injured reserve and placed fellow wide receiver Randall Cobb on IR on Saturday.

Watkins (hamstring) was added to the injury report and joins offensive tackle David Bakhtiari (knee) in being listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders.

Watkins, 29, was hurt in Week 2 and placed on IR on Sept. 24. He had six receptions for 111 yards in two starts.

Watkins has 354 catches for 5,170 yards and 34 touchdowns in 101 games with the Buffalo Bills (2014-16), Los Angeles Rams (2017), Kansas City Chiefs (2018-20), Baltimore Ravens (2021) and Packers.

Cobb, 32, sustained an ankle injury and was carted to the locker room during the second half of the Packers’ loss to the New York Jets last Sunday.

He has 18 catches for 257 yards in six games (one start) on the season.

Cobb has 609 receptions for 7,425 yards with 52 touchdowns in 148 career games with the Packers (2011-18, 2021-present), Dallas Cowboys (2019) and Houston Texans (2020).

Also on Saturday, the Packers placed center/guard Jake Hanson (biceps) on injured reserve and elevated linebacker La’Darius Hamilton from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s game.

Hanson, 25, has appeared in 11 games (one start) with Green Bay.

Hamilton, 24, had three tackles in six games last season with the Packers.

Packers place WR Sammy Watkins (hamstring) on IR

The Green Bay Packers placed wide receiver Sammy Watkins on injured reserve Saturday with a hamstring injury.

Watkins had already been ruled out for Sunday’s road game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He will be eligible to return from IR after missing a minimum of four games.

Watkins, 29, leads the Packers (1-1) with 111 yards on six receptions through two games.

He has 354 catches for 5,170 yards and 34 touchdowns in 101 games with the Buffalo Bills (2014-16), Los Angeles Rams (2017), Kansas City Chiefs (2018-20), Baltimore Ravens (2021) and Packers.

Green Bay elevated wide receiver Juwann Winfree and running back Patrick Taylor from the practice squad for the meeting with the Buccaneers (2-0).

Packers’ Allen Lazard likely to play, Sammy Watkins out vs. Bucs

Allen Lazard could be back on the field when the Green Bay Packers face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, while fellow receiver Sammy Watkins will sit out with a hamstring injury.

Lazard, forecasted to be Green Bay’s top receiving threat after the offseason trade of Davante Adams, missed the season opener against the Minnesota Vikings due to an ankle injury. He played in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears.

Despite playing 55 snaps, Lazard had just two catches for 13 yards and a touchdown against the Bears. His ankle injury caused him to be a limited practice participant on Wednesday and miss practice on Thursday before he was back on the field in a limited capacity on Friday.

Watkins was limited on Wednesday and Thursday before sitting out Friday. He has a team-best 111 receiving yards.

Two other receivers are questionable — Randall Cobb (illness) and Christian Watson (hamstring).

Tight end Marcedes Lewis (groin) and offensive tackle David Bakhtiari (knee) are questionable.

Packers missing top four WRs at practice

The Green Bay Packers practiced Thursday without their top four wide receivers.

Starters Allen Lazard (ankle), Sammy Watkins (hamstring) and Randall Cobb (illness), and Christian Watson (hamstring) all did not practice (DNP) ahead of their Week 3 game against Tampa Bay.

All but Cobb practiced Wednesday but were listed as limited.

Lazard missed Week 1 after his ankle was stepped on in practice the week before. Watkins and rookie Romeo Doubs lead the wideout corps with six catches each through two games. Watkins has 111 yards to Doubs’ 64.

The Packers sport just two throwing touchdowns in two games – one each to Lazard and running back Aaron Jones.

Tight end Marcedes Lewis (groin) also missed practice.

Tackle David Bakhtiari (knee) was back at practice Thursday after a DNP on Wednesday.

The Packers re-signed WR Travis Fulgham to the practice squad Thursday, joining Juwann Winfree. The Packers have three healthy WRs currently on the 53-man roster: Doubs, Samori Toure and Amari Rodgers.

The Packers (1-1) play at Tampa Bay (2-0) on Sunday.

Chiefs’ Clyde Edwards-Helaire questionable vs. Browns

Kansas City Chiefs rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire is questionable for Sunday’s AFC divisional round playoff game against the Cleveland Browns despite missing practice for the second straight day.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid announced the playing statuses of Edwards-Helaire, wide receiver Sammy Watkins and linebacker Willie Gay on Friday. Watkins (calf) and Gay (ankle) were ruled out of Sunday’s home game.

Edwards-Helaire, who is nursing hip and ankle injuries, missed the final two games of the regular season.

Despite those absences, Edwards-Helaire recorded team-leading totals in carries (181), rushing yards (803) and rushing touchdowns (four). He also had 36 catches for 297 yards and a score since being selected by Kansas City with the 32nd overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Running backs Le’Veon Bell and Darrel Williams would see an increase in snaps should Edwards-Helaire be limited or unable to play against Cleveland.

Bell rushed for 254 yards and two touchdowns in nine games with the Chiefs, while Williams had 169 yards and one score in 16 games.

Demarcus Robinson likely will see more snaps in place of Watkins, who had 37 receptions for 421 yards and two touchdowns this season. Robinson had 45 catches for 466 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games in 2020.

The Browns listed four players as questionable: Offensive tackle Jack Conklin (hamstring/knee), linebacker B.J. Goodson (shoulder), tight end David Njoku (hamstring) and tight end Stephen Carlson (groin).
