Report: Mike Kafka, Anthony Weaver get 2nd interviews with Saints

The New Orleans Saints are hosting New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka for a second interview for their head coaching job Tuesday, while Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator will get a second look later this week, NFL Network reported.

Kafka, 37, will get a longer look in New Orleans after being a finalist for Seattle’s opening last winter. Weaver is again a finalist after bids with Washington and Atlanta a year ago. His second interview will be Wednesday, per the report.

Kafka has no experience leading an NFL team, but he has been the head coach for collegiate showcases in each of the past two seasons: the East-West Shrine Bowl on Feb. 1, 2024, and the upcoming Feb. 1 Senior Bowl.

He has been New York’s offensive coordinator since 2022 and added the title of assistant head coach on Brian Daboll’s staff in 2024.

The Giants finished 18th, 29th and 30th in the NFL in total offense from 2022-24 under Kafka.

A journeyman NFL quarterback who spent time with seven teams from 2010-15, Kafka joined Andy Reid’s staff in Kansas City in 2017 and moved his way up to quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator from 2020-21.

Weaver, 44, is in his first season as defensive coordinator with the Dolphins. He was a position coach on that side of the line with the New York Jets (2012), Buffalo Bills (2013), Cleveland Browns (2014-15), Houston Texans (2016-19) and Baltimore Ravens (2021-23) before becoming the Texans’ DC in 2020.

The Saints’ search has also included in-person interview with interim coach Darren Rizzi, who went 3-5 following the firing of Dennis Allen. New Orleans has had virtual interviews with offensive coordinators Kellen Moore and Joe Brady of the Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills, respectively.

Simple assault charge dropped against Titans OLB Rashad Weaver

A misdemeanor simple assault charge against Tennessee Titans outside linebacker Rashad Weaver has been dropped, according to multiple reports.

The criminal case was closed and Weaver’s trial, which was set to begin Tuesday, was canceled, according to The Tennessean.

The charge was tied to an incident that happened outside a bar in Pittsburgh in April 2021. A woman told police that Weaver “grabbed her by the throat and pushed her to the ground, where she ultimately hit her head.”

According to The Tennessean, records display that the prosecutor decided to no longer pursue the criminal charge.

Weaver played college football at Pitt before the Titans selected him in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Weaver, 25, was limited to two games as a rookie due to a broken fibula. Last season, he had 27 tackles, 5.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in 16 games (four starts).

Titans WR A.J. Brown (hamstring) could miss multiple weeks

Tennessee Titans receiver A.J. Brown’s hamstring injury has been diagnosed as a strain and his status is week-to-week, ESPN reported Monday.

Brown injured the hamstring during Sunday’s victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

Titans coach Mike Vrabel told reporters on Monday that he didn’t have a timetable for Brown’s return.

“I am confident that he’ll do his best to get back out there and be the player and the person that we have come to expect,” Vrabel said. “We all go through things throughout the course of a season, it is a long season. We all deal with a lot, and I am confident that everybody, including A.J., will be able to weather some of those storms.”

Brown didn’t catch a pass before exiting after the first-quarter injury and has just seven receptions for 92 yards and one touchdown this season.

Last season, Brown caught 70 passes for 1,075 yards and 11 touchdowns in 14 games (12 starts) and made the Pro Bowl.

He has caught 20 scoring passes in 33 career games (26 starts).

Rookie outside linebacker Rashad Weaver sustained a lower-leg injury against the Colts and Vrabel indicated he won’t be back soon. Published reports say Weaver broke his right fibula.

Weaver is a fourth-round draft choice out of Pittsburgh.

The Titans (2-1) visit the New York Jets (0-3) on Sunday.
