Pass rusher Whitney Mercilus retires after 10 seasons

Longtime Houston Texans pass rusher Whitney Mercilus announced his retirement Wednesday after 10 seasons and 58 sacks.

Mercilus, 31, played all but four of his 138 career games (102 starts) for the Texans from 2012-21. The Texans released Mercilus last Oct. 19 and he was signed by the Green Bay Packers two days later.

He played in four games for the Packers before finishing the regular season on injured reserve with a left biceps tear. He returned to play 12 snaps for the Packers in their loss to San Francisco in the NFC divisional round of the playoffs.

Mercilus made the announcement on social media.

“It’s time to hang it up,” Mercilus wrote. “Merci out.”

He plans on becoming a grill master for his family.

Mercilus was selected No. 26 overall by the Texans in the 2012 draft. He finishes with 362 career tackles – including 73 for loss – to go with 13 forced fumbles and nine fumble recoveries. He earned second team All-Pro in 2016, one season after recording a career-high 12 sacks.

He also was a unanimous college All-American for Illinois in 2011.

Packers’ Whitney Mercilus designated to return off IR

Green Bay Packers defensive end Whitney Mercilus participated in practice on Thursday after being designated to return off injured reserve.

Mercilus’ return is considered surprising given that he was thought to have sustained a season-ending tear of his left biceps in Green Bay’s 17-0 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 14. He was placed on injured reserve two days later.

Mercilus, 31, recorded 12 tackles and 3.0 sacks in six games (two starts) this season with Houston before being released by the Texans in October. He had five tackles and one sack in four games with the Packers.

Mercilus has 362 tackles and 58 sacks in 138 career games (102 starts) since being selected by the Texans with the 26th overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Reports: Packers, pass rusher Whitney Mercilus agree to deal

Pass rusher Whitney Mercilus agreed to a deal with the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday, according to reports.

Mercilus was released Tuesday by the Houston Texans. Mercilus has 57 sacks in 134 career games (102 starts) since being selected by the Texans with the 26th overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft.

The NFC North-leading Packers have 14 sacks in six games and have made other attempts to address their pass rush.

Mercilus, 31, said upon his release he wanted to latch on with a team likely to play in the postseason.

“As far as it goes, (I’d like) to be with a team that has a chance to make it to the playoffs, to make it to the Super Bowl,” he said. “To be with a contender honestly is the direction that I want to go.”

Texans release DE Whitney Mercilus

The Houston Texans released veteran defensive end Whitney Mercilus on Tuesday.

Mercilus, 31, told Sports Talk 790 that he was informed of the impending move on Monday by the Texans, who are looking toward the future. Mercilus also addressed his future in regard to potential landing spots.

“As far as it goes, (I’d like) to be with a team that has a chance to make it to the playoffs, to make it to the Super Bowl,” he said. “To be with a contender honestly is the direction that I want to go.”

Mercilus took to social media to express his appreciation to the Texans organization.

“It was 10 years ago I received the call that would forever change my life. The Houston Texans organization welcomed me with open arms and the City of Houston became home,” Mercilus wrote on Instagram.

“To the McNair family … Thank you for believing in a kid from Akron, Ohio.

“To my teammates who have become my brothers for life … Thank you for the talks, thank you for having my back on the field and thank you for always coming through for my work in the community.

“Texans fans … You have been amazing! We’ve been together through both exciting and challenging times, and I’ll always admire the heart and perseverance of the Houston community. No matter what, you’ve always showed up and supported me on and off the field.”

Mercilus recorded 12 tackles and 3.0 sacks in six games (two starts) this season. He has 357 tackles and 57 sacks in 134 career games (102 starts) since being selected by the Texans with the 26th overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft.

His game total is the third-most in franchise history, while his sack total is second behind current Arizona Cardinals star J.J. Watt.

“There aren’t many players in franchise history who have impacted our organization and community the way Whitney Mercilus has,” Texans CEO Cal McNair said. “I can recall a number of times over the last 10 seasons where he stepped up for us on the field with a sack or big play in a crucial moment, but it was his unique connection with the Houston community that made him one of the most popular players in franchise history. Our fan base gravitated to Whitney from day one and he always found ways to give back and serve through his foundation and culinary work. My family and the entire organization will always consider Whitney a Texan.”

Texans LB Mercilus placed on reserve/COVID-19 list

The Houston Texans placed linebacker Whitney Mercilus on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Friday and ruled out running back Duke Johnson for this weekend’s game against the visiting Cincinnati Bengals.

Mercilus, 30, is not eligible to play in Sunday’s game. He has recorded 21 tackles and four sacks in 13 games (12 starts) this season.

Johnson, who also sat out Houston’s 27-20 loss to Indianapolis on Sunday, did not participate in practice all week while nursing a neck injury.

David Johnson likely will handle the majority of the rushing duties on Sunday for the Texans (4-10). He led the team with eight carries and 27 yards versus the Colts.

Cornerback Phillip Gaines was a limited participant all week with a knee injury. He is listed as questionable to face the Bengals (3-10-1).
