Dolphins RB Jaylen Wright (leg) out multiple weeks

Miami Dolphins running back Jaylen Wright is expected to miss multiple weeks after a minor procedure, coach Mike McDaniel said Thursday.

Wright, 22, has been dealing with a leg injury and the team hopes to have him back before the end of September.

Starting running back De’Von Achane is recovering from a calf injury and remains on track for the Sept. 7 season opener against the host Indianapolis Colts.

The Dolphins also have sixth-round rookie Ollie Gordon II in the backfield and they signed veteran running backs JaMycal Hasty and Jeff Wilson to the practice squad. Alexander Mattison will miss the season with a neck injury.

Wright ran for 249 yards and caught three passes in 15 games (one start) as a rookie last season after being selected in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Dolphins won’t have K Jason Sanders, RB Jaylen Wright Week 1

Dolphins running back Jaylen Wright won’t be on the field for Week 1 and Miami is also shopping for a kicker with Jason Sanders hurt, coach Mike McDaniel said Monday.

ESPN reported Sanders could miss 4-5 weeks with a hip injury.

Wright has a leg injury and could return soon after the Dolphins begin the regular season at Indianapolis, McDaniel said, which makes sixth-round rookie Ollie Gordon II the likely backup to De’Von Achane to start the regular season.

Gordon led the Dolphins in rushing in the preseason with 126 yards on 26 carries. Wright had 13 carries for 19 yards. He was third on the team with 68 carries for 249 yards in 2024.

Punter Jake Bailey handled kickoff and field goal duties on Saturday when Sanders returned to the locker room and wasn’t available in the preseason finale against the Jaguars.

Sanders will not need surgery, McDaniel said. He added the Dolphins plan to host tryouts for veteran kickers this week.

Bailey’s 51-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter fell well short.

Sanders made 37 of 41 field-goal attempts last season. He drilled 27 consecutive FGs to end the season and finished eighth in the NFL with 137 points.

A return date isn’t clear for Sanders. A seventh-round pick in 2018, Sanders has never missed a game in his NFL career, playing only for the Dolphins.

Northwestern benches QB Mike Wright for Jack Lausch

Northwestern is making a change at starting quarterback, replacing Mike Wright with Jack Lausch.

Coach David Braun announced the move Monday as the Wildcats (1-1) prepare to host Eastern Illinois on Saturday.

Wright, a graduate student who previously played at Vanderbilt (2020-22) and Mississippi State (2023), completed 56.9 percent of his passes (37 of 65) for 334 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in the first two games. He also rushed for 81 yards and one score.

Wright’s interception came during the first quarter in Northwestern’s 26-20, double-overtime loss against visiting Duke last Friday.

Lausch, a redshirt sophomore, played in 10 games for the Wildcats last season. He completed 2 of 3 passes for 10 yards and rushed 19 times for 80 yards and a touchdown, adding two catches for 9 yards.

Northwestern opens the Big Ten campaign on Sept. 21 at Washington.

Lions sign TE Zach Ertz, DL Tyson Alualu from practice squad

The Detroit Lions signed tight end Zach Ertz and defensive lineman Tyson Alualu from the practice squad on Wednesday, placing tight end Brock Wright on injured reserve with a broken forearm.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell confirmed Wednesday that Ertz was in the building and passed a physical before a team confirmation landed later in the afternoon.

Ertz took part in his first practice since he was released by the Arizona Cardinals to give him an opportunity to join a Super Bowl contender. The Lions will meet the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in the NFC title game.

Alualu has appeared in the past four games for the Lions due to injuries.

Getting Ertz up to speed in the offense is more of a concern than conditioning, Campbell said.

“I know he’s in shape. We’re have to gauge this and see where he’s at. He’s played at a high level — it’s just a matter of, is this the week to use him,” Campbell said.

Ertz won Super Bowl LII as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Wright was the No. 2 tight end for the Lions this season, behind rookie Sam LaPorta. He broke his forearm in the second quarter of Sunday’s NFC Divisional Playoff win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Ertz, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, played in seven games for the struggling Cardinals in 2023, catching 27 passes for 187 yards with one touchdown. He caught six passes for 63 yards for the Cardinals at San Francisco on Oct. 1.

In 151 career games (113 starts) with the Eagles (2013-21) and Cardinals (2021-23), Ertz has 709 receptions for 7,434 yards with 46 touchdowns.

Lions tight ends coach Steve Heiden is familiar with Ertz, having coached the same position for the Cardinals from 2019-22.

Cowboys place TE Peyton Hendershot (ankle) on IR

The Dallas Cowboys placed tight end Peyton Hendershot on injured reserve Thursday with an ankle injury.

Hendershot must miss at least the next four games and will be eligible to return in Week 11 at Carolina (Nov. 19).

The Cowboys (3-2) signed tight end Sean McKeon from the practice squad to the 53-man active roster ahead of Monday night’s road game against the Los Angeles Chargers (2-2).

Dallas also signed linebacker Rashaan Evans to the practice squad and designated cornerback Nahshon Wright (ankle) to return from injured reserve.

Hendershot, 24, was inactive for the past two games but did not show the progress physically that the Cowboys were looking for.

He has one catch for 3 yards in three games this season after catching 11 passes for 103 yards and two scores in 17 games (two starts) as an undrafted rookie in 2022.

Report: 49ers signing K Matthew Wright

The San Francisco 49ers are signing veteran kicker Matthew Wright to the practice squad, ESPN reported Thursday.

Injuries to rookie third-round pick Jake Moody (quad) and Zane Gonzalez (calf) prompted the move.

The 49ers aren’t sure if Moody will be ready for the Sept. 10 season opener at Pittsburgh, and Wright provides insurance.

Wright, who was in camp with the Carolina Panthers this summer, has kicked in 23 NFL games.

He began his career with the Steelers in 2020 and rejoined them for four games last season.

Wright, 27, has connected on 40 of 46 field goals and 35 of 37 extra points with the Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars (2021) and Kansas City Chiefs (2022).

The 49ers placed Gonzalez on injured reserve on Tuesday, meaning he will miss at least the first four games.

Oregon CB Mykael Wright declares for NFL draft

Oregon cornerback Mykael Wright announced Saturday he is entering the NFL draft and skipping the Alamo Bowl.

“Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been patiently waiting for this day to come,” Wright said in his announcement on social media. “… That being said, I will be opting out of the bowl game and declaring for the 2022 NFL Draft.

Wright had 65 tackles and one interception in 12 games this season. He had 111 stops and two interceptions in 34 career games for the Ducks and also returned two kickoffs for scores.

Wright joins star defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux and receiver Devon Williams as Oregon players to opt out of the Dec. 29 game against No. 16 Oklahoma.

No. 14 Oregon (10-3) has lost two of its past three games, both defeats coming against Pac-12 champion Utah.
