Cowboys G Zack Martin to have season-ending ankle surgery

Seven-time All-Pro guard Zack Martin will have season-ending surgery on his right ankle, Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy announced Thursday.

McCarthy acknowledged that he had a conversation with Martin this week, with the latter determining that surgery was the best avenue toward recovery.

“He’s gonna be missed,” McCarthy said. “We’re not gonna replace Zack Martin, by any means. … He brings so much to the team and the team culture. We all recognize what kind of player he’s been here in Dallas, but the type of person he is — people gravitate to him. His leadership, he’ll definitely be missed in that area.”

Martin, 34, is in the final year of his contract. He said in June that retirement was an option following this season.

A nine-time Pro Bowl selection, Martin was named the Cowboys’ 2024 nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award on Thursday.

Martin last played in Dallas’ 34-10 loss to the Houston Texans on Nov. 18.

He has started 10 games this season and all 162 in which he has played since the Cowboys selected him with the 16th overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Cowboys G Tyler Smith inactive vs. Commanders

The Dallas Cowboys will be without both of their starting guards on Sunday after declaring Tyler Smith inactive versus the host Washington Commanders.

Smith, the Cowboys’ left guard, was questionable to play against the Commanders despite missing two practices this week with ankle and knee injuries before returning for a limited session on Friday.

Right guard Zack Martin has been dealing with ankle and shoulder injuries and didn’t practice at all this week before initially being listed as doubtful to play on Friday. The seven-time All-Pro and nine-time Pro Bowl selection officially was downgraded to out on Saturday.

T.J. Bass and Brock Hoffman likely will start at guard for Dallas (3-7), which also will be without cornerbacks Trevon Diggs and Caelen Carson, running back Deuce Vaughn, tight end Jake Ferguson and defensive end Tyrus Wheat.

As for the Commanders (7-4), cornerbacks Marshon Lattimore and Emmanuel Forbes, quarterback Jeff Driskel, linebacker Dominique Hampton and guard Chris Paul have been ruled inactive.

Cowboys LT Tyron Smith (back) doubtful vs. Dolphins

Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith is listed as doubtful and right guard Zack Martin questionable to play against the host Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Smith is nursing a back injury. The two-time All-Pro and eight-time Pro Bowl selection is trending toward sitting out his fourth game of the season.

Martin suffered a quadriceps injury in last weekend’s game against the Buffalo Bills when he was hit by Gregory Rousseau with 2:53 remaining in the first quarter. The six-time All-Pro and eight-time Pro Bowl selection sat out practice Wednesday and Thursday before being limited in Friday’s walkthrough.

Also Friday, the Cowboys (10-4) ruled out defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins (knee, ankle) and listed safety Malik Hooker (ankle), defensive end Viliami Fehoko (knee) and offensive tackle Matt Waletzko (shoulder) as questionable to face the Dolphins (10-4).

Cowboys’ Zack Martin (quad) ruled out vs. Bills

Dallas Cowboys All-Pro right guard Zack Martin has been ruled out of Sunday’s road game against the Buffalo Bills after sustaining a left quadriceps injury.

Martin was injured after he was hit by Gregory Rousseau with 2:53 remaining in the first quarter. Initially, Martin was listed as questionable to return before the Cowboys announced after halftime that he was out for the contest.

T.J. Bass replaced Martin, who is a six-time All-Pro and eight-time Pro Bowl selection.

Cowboys OG Zack Martin added to injury report

If the Cowboys want to contend with New York Jets Pro Bowl defensive tackle Quinnen Williams on Sunday, guards Zack Martin and Tyler Smith are essential.

Neither practiced on Thursday with Martin a surprise addition to the injury report due to a groin injury. He was officially listed as a limited practice participant as was Smith, who is still fighting off a hamstring injury.

Head coach Mike McCarthy said Thursday that Smith is getting better. Martin’s inclusion on the injury report wasn’t known at the time McCarthy was made available to the media.

Martin missed training camp in a contract squabble with the Cowboys. He made his 138th start with the franchise last week.

Martin, 32, is a six-time All-Pro and eight-time Pro Bowl selection in his 10th season.

Williams, 25, earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2022 with 12 sacks and 28 quarterback hits in 16 starts before signing a four-year contract worth a reported $96 million.

Reports: Cowboys G Zack Martin reaches deal, ends holdout

All-Pro guard Zack Martin ended his holdout Monday after reaching a new deal with the Dallas Cowboys, according to multiple reports.

The reworked contract will pay him more than $18 million in each of the next two years, fully guaranteed, per the reports.

That’s an extra $8.5 million for Martin, who had been slated to earn $13.5 million in 2023 and $14 million in 2024.

Martin, 32, has been a holdout for training camp in Oxnard, Calif., while seeking additional compensation.

The six-time All-Pro and eight-time Pro Bowl selection is going into his 10th season with the Cowboys, who drafted him in the first round (16th overall) in 2014.

Martin has started 137 regular season games and eight postseason games for Dallas.

Cowboys OG Zack Martin no-show for training camp

Zack Martin was absent for the first day of Dallas Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, Calif., on Tuesday and is expected to dig in while waiting for his contract to be addressed.

Owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday that he was “not going to discuss anything” about contract matters while speaking at his annual camp kickoff press conference. The first practice of camp is Wednesday, and players are not required to travel on the team charter to California.

Jones said, “I think we’ve got a chance to be a contender,” when asked about the Cowboys’ expectations.

But Martin is an essential piece of the puzzle on offense, a six-time All-Pro and eight-time Pro Bowl selection in nine years with the team.

If Martin holds out, the Cowboys could be looking at unproven options at right guard: rookie fifth-round pick Asim Richards or 2021 seventh-rounder Matt Farniok.

Martin, 32, signed a six-year, $84 million extension in 2018, making him the league’s top-paid guard at the time.

Entering camp this week, his standing is significantly lower.

Atlanta Falcons guard Chris Lindstrom ($20.5 million) and Indianapolis Colts guard Quenton Nelson ($20 million) are the top-paid players at the position based on average annual salary. Martin’s $14 million per-year average is ninth among guards.

Martin was the No. 16 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Martin can be fined under NFL rules and would potentially forfeit more than $900,000 if he skips camp entirely. Often as contract disagreements are settled, such attendance-related fines are waived or negotiated out of the final salary figure.

Reports: Cowboys OG Zack Martin considering holdout

Cowboys All-Pro guard Zack Martin might not be with the team when Dallas reports to training camp in Oxnard, Calif.

Martin is weighing a holdout to encourage the Cowboys to address his contract, according to reports.

ESPN reported sources said Martin’s unhappiness with his contract and the team’s unwillingness to address it prompted holdout plans. Martin, per the report, believes he is “woefully underpaid relative to the market.”

Martin, 32, signed a six-year, $84 million deal in 2018, making him the league’s top-paid guard at the time.

Atlanta Falcons guard Chris Lindstrom ($20.5 million) and Indianapolis Colts guard Quenton Nelson ($20M) are the top-paid players at the position based on average annual salary. Martin’s $14 million per-year average is ninth among guards.

The eight-time Pro Bowl selection was the No. 16 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Cowboys RG Zack Martin tests positive for COVID-19

Dallas Cowboys All-Pro right guard Zack Martin tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss Thursday night’s season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Martin, 30, was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Sunday.

Head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters Martin is “frustrated.”

“This is the world we live in right now,” McCarthy said.

Martin has started 104 of a possible 112 games since Dallas drafted him in the first round (16th overall) in 2014. He made six straight Pro Bowls and earned four first-team All-Pro selections from 2014-19 before missing six games last season with a calf injury.

Reserve guard Brandon Knight is in the COVID-19 protocols after being identified as a close contact.

Two Cowboys offensive linemen received better news. Multiple outlets reported that right tackle La’el Collins was cleared to return to practice Sunday after sitting out last week with a neck stinger, and left guard Connor Williams was activated from the COVID-19 list.

Report: Cowboys rework deals to 3 OL starters, free up $17M

On the same day the Dallas Cowboys held a press conference to discuss their new record-breaking contract with quarterback Dak Prescott, they reportedly made moves to potentially strengthen the team around him.

A trio of Prescott’s most important protectors — offensive linemen Tyron Smith, Zack Martin and La’el Collins — have agreed to restructure their current deals to allow the Cowboys approximately $17 million in salary-cap relief, a source told ESPN Wednesday.

The Cowboys, especially on the heels over Prescott’s four-year, $160 million agreement he officially signed earlier in the day, were projected to be less than a million dollars under the salary cap entering the day, per Over The Cap.

The team will certainly be looking to create more cap room with the start of free agency beginning in exactly one week, with the approved negotiating period kicking off next Monday.

The duo of Smith and Martin, both 30, have anchored the Dallas offensive line for most of the past decade — combining for 13 Pro Bowl selections and six first-team All-Pro berths. Collins has been a regular starter as well since 2015 when available. He played just three games in 2016 after tearing a ligament in his toe, and missed all of last season because of a hip ailment.

Martin and Collins are currently signed through the 2024 season, while Smith is signed through 2023.
