Drayton Florence officially retiring from NFL, graduating from college
Veteran NFL cornerback Drayton Florence told National Football Post he's officially retiring from the NFL on Friday, the same day he'll graduate from the University of North Florida.
"On to getting my master's degree next," Florence wrote in an email. "I'm thankful for all the opportunities and relationships I built due to the greatest team game. Sport is powerful and it has changed my life, and all the generations to follow. Because of football I have been able to get a college degree and will now get my master!!! Mom I did it!!"
Florence said he'd like to become an NFL general manager one day.
It's a rare distinction to retire from the NFL and graduate from college in the same day.
Florence majored in sports management and minored in business.
Florence, 34, played a dozen seasons in the NFL.
A former San Diego Chargers second-round draft pick from Tuskegee drafted 46th overall, Florence also played for the Carolina Panthers, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars and Denver Broncos.
He finished his career with 486 tackles, 20 interceptions, three touchdowns and three forced fumbles. He had 95 pass deflections.
Florence had 26 tackles, two interceptions, one touchdown and nine pass deflections in five starts in 14 games in 2013 with the Panthers.
Florence was with the Lions last year before being released. Florence had a career-high four interceptions in 2004 with the Chargers.
Florence was an All-American selection in college, was the highest drafted player ever from Tuskegee and is a member of the school's Hall of Fame.
