Miami Dolphins running back De'Von Achane (28) scores a touchdown after running past New York Jets cornerback Brandin Echols (26) and New York Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood (44) in the fourth quarter, Sunday January 5, 2025, in East Rutherford.

Dolphins GM: RB De’Von Achane to play in season opener

Miami Dolphins running back De’Von Achane is expected to be ready for the season opener against the host Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 7, general manager Chris Grier announced Wednesday.

Achane, who has been battling a calf injury, was held out of the last two preseason contests. He also did not participate in several practices, a decision the team said was precautionary.

“All indications to us is Achane will be ready Week 1,” Grier said.

The Dolphins already are thin at running back after Alexander Mattison sustained a season-ending neck injury and Jaylen Wright injured his leg in the preseason. Sixth-round pick Ollie Gordon II is expected to spell Achane in the season opener.

Achane, 23, had 203 carries for 907 yards and six touchdowns, and caught 78 passes on 87 targets for 592 yards and six TDs in 17 regular-season games (16 starts) last season.

As a rookie in 2023, Achane rushed 103 times for 800 yards and eight TDs. He also had 27 receptions for 197 yards and three scores in 11 games (four starts).

Miami selected Achane in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Report: Dolphins lose RB Alexander Mattison for season

Miami Dolphins running back Alexander Mattison is out for the season after neck surgery, ESPN reported Monday.

Mattison, 27, sustained the injury as he was tackled on a 21-yard pass play in Sunday’s preseason game against the Bears in Chicago. He was taken in an ambulance to a local hospital where he underwent surgery.

He is expected to make a full recovery, per the report.

The Dolphins reportedly worked out veteran running back Jamaal Williams on Monday in a related development.

Williams, 30, was released by New Orleans in March. He had signed a three-year, $12 million deal with the Saints after having a career season with the Detroit Lions in 2022, when he led the NFL in rushing touchdowns.

But his production was meager in 27 games (five starts) with New Orleans. Williams had just 470 rushing yards and two touchdowns and caught 27 passes for 119 yards.

Last season, Williams had 164 yards and one TD on the ground and nine receptions for 57 yards in 14 games (one start).

In 2022, Williams rushed for 1,066 yards and an NFL-high 17 rushing touchdowns with the Lions before becoming a free agent.

Williams has rushed for 4,122 yards and 32 touchdowns and caught 187 passes for 1,310 yards and eight TDs in 117 games (45 starts) with the Green Bay Packers (2017-20), Lions (2021-22) and Saints.

Mattison played in 14 games (seven starts) last season for the Las Vegas Raiders, rushing for 420 yards and four TDs. He also had 36 catches for 294 yards and one score.

The Vikings’ 2019 third-round draft pick out of Boise State, Mattison spent five seasons in Minnesota. In 89 career games (26 starts), he has rushed for 2,790 yards and 15 TDs and has 136 catches for 1,012 yards and seven scores.

The Miami backfield features starter De’Von Achane along with 2024 fourth-round pick Jaylen Wright and rookie sixth-rounder Ollie Gordon II.

Bucs rookie RB Bucky Irving active vs. reeling Raiders

Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie running back Bucky Irving is active for Sunday’s game against the visiting Las Vegas Raiders.

Irving, the reigning NFC Offensive Player of the Week, was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game due to hip and back injuries.

Irving, 22, has team-leading totals in carries (133), rushing yards (732) and rushing touchdowns (six) in 12 games this season. He also has 35 catches for 285 yards.

While Irving is in the lineup, the Buccaneers (6-6) listed the following players as inactive: linebackers K.J. Britt and J.J. Russell, defensive line Earnest Brown, tight end Devin Culp, safety Mike Edwards, cornerback Josh Hayes and edge rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka.

Losers of eight in a row, the Raiders (2-10) will be without running backs Zamir White and Alexander Mattison for the third straight game. Ameer Abdullah and Sincere McCormick are expected to lead the ground attack on Sunday.

Vikings release former starting RB Alexander Mattison

The Minnesota Vikings on Monday released running back Alexander Mattison, who had started the first 13 games last season before losing that role to Ty Chandler in December.

Vikings RB Dalvin Cook (shoulder) ruled out vs. Lions

Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook has been ruled out of this weekend’s game against the host Detroit Lions with a shoulder injury.

Alexander Mattison is expected to receive the bulk of the workload out of the backfield on Sunday. Mattison, 23, has rushed for 315 yards and a touchdown in 11 games this season for the Vikings (5-6).

Cook gained 39 yards on 10 rushes and caught six passes for 64 yards before departing the contest.

The 26-year-old has 773 rushing yards and four touchdowns in nine games. He has surpassed 1,100 rushing yards in each of the two previous seasons.
