Week 14 MNF: Cowboys-Bengals Preview, Prop and Prediction

A Week 14 matchup between the Bengals and Cowboys looked intriguing when the league released the schedule.

Not many expected these teams to be near the bottom of the pecking order in the playoff picture.

Cincinnati (4-8) and Dallas (5-7) have a 2% chance of reaching the postseason according to NFL.com’s playoff predictor.

With such a grim outlook, these defenses could be particularly vulnerable.

As a result, this is a matchup where offenses are in line for big numbers, so it’s no surprise that we have a total of 49.5.

The Bengals have the more fluid offense and would be in a better spot in the standings if not for quite a few bad breaks. We’ll explain why bettors should expect the Bengals to jump out to a fast start on Monday night.

–Joe Burrow has been elite

Per TeamRankings, the Jets (-2.7) are the only team with a worse luck factor than the Bengals (-2.4).

That metric suggests that, with a little better luck, the Bengals could have had an additional 2.4 wins on the year.

They’ve gotten excellent play at the quarterback position from Joe Burrow, who leads the league with 30 touchdowns while only throwing five interceptions.

Burrow’s play has been so good that he even ranks second in Total QBR with a 74.2 value. Given the importance of the position, it’s rare that you see a quarterback with such a high Total QBR on a team that’s four games under .500.

It’s worth noting that Burrow still managed to put up these prodigious numbers despite not having one of his best wide receivers, Tee Higgins, for five games.

Higgins is now back with the team, which should help Cincinnati’s all-gas and no-brakes offense.

-Prop Play
It’s a night for the receivers in Dallas, a duel that spotlights No. 1 targets CeeDee Lamb and Ja’Marr Chase.

Lamb was slow to return to the practice field midweek but is ready to go and will be active against a Bengals’ defense with no true No. 1 cornerback. He’ll be targeted early and is a bargain for two-plus catches on the opening drive (+350).

We are resisting that early wager based on the number of variables at play and Cooper Rush’s wild inconsistency working from the pocket.

But both offenses will get plenty of yards and air it out, making the two-player prop for these wide receivers an easy decision.

Prop pick: CeeDee Lamb alternate receiving yards, 70-plus; Ja’Marr Chase alternate receiving yards, 90-plus (+285, FanDuel)

–Bengals’ offense is their best defense
Given Burrow’s performances, the Bengals have no choice but to lean on him to get the offense going. Cincinnati has the fourth-highest pass-play rate (64.3%) in the league, mainly because its defense can barely stop a nosebleed at this point.

Moreover, the Bengals have the fourth-worst defense by DVOA standards. They particularly struggle against the pass, which the Cowboys offense will look to take advantage of after posting back-to-back wins to snap a five-game losing streak.

Considering that Dallas also has the third-highest pass-play rate (64.9%), it’s no secret what these offenses will try to do once they get on the field.

While Cowboys backup quarterback Cooper Rush has looked better in his last few games, there’s no comparison between him and Burrow.

The Bengals are in a position where they can’t relax on offense because of their leaky defense. They should have plenty of success against a Dallas team that struggles to get stops inside the red zone, allowing opponents to score touchdowns on a league-worst 76.9% of their trips.

When you combine that with Cincinnati having the second-best red zone offense (71%), it could be a long night for the Cowboys’ defense.

However, the number that stands out the most is that the Cowboys’ defense gives up an average of 20.7 first-half points per game to visiting teams.

That stat is simply too good to pass up, making the Bengals’ first-half team total of 13.5 points a play worth targeting on Monday night.

Bears clinch No. 1 pick in 2024 NFL Draft via Panthers

A season ago, the Chicago Bears received the No. 1 overall draft pick and traded it to the Carolina Panthers. The swap included Carolina’s first-round pick in 2024 heading to Chicago.

On Sunday, the Bears secured the first overall pick once again as the Panthers clinched the worst record in the league with their latest loss.

The Panthers lost 26-0 to the Jacksonville Jaguars for their eighth loss in nine games and fell to 2-14.

With the Arizona Cardinals upsetting the Philadelphia Eagles 35-31 to improve to 4-12, Carolina is two games clear of every other team in the standings with one week left in the regular season.

Chicago (7-9) has won four of its last five games after routing the Atlanta Falcons 37-17 on Sunday. Wide receiver DJ Moore, acquired from the Panthers when the Bears traded out of the No. 1 slot, racked up nine catches for 159 yards and a touchdown against Atlanta. Moore has 92 receptions and has set career highs of 1,300 yards and eight receiving scores.

The Bears will have to decide whether to move on from second-year quarterback Justin Fields and select a different signal-caller with the top overall pick — like Southern California’s Caleb Williams or North Carolina’s Drake Maye — or stick with Fields and draft another position.

Chicago has held the first overall pick twice, not counting the 2023 selection it traded away. The Bears drafted halfbacks Tom Harmon in 1941 and Bob Fenimore in 1947.

Arizona is tied with the Washington Commanders and New England Patriots at 4-12. Based on tiebreakers, Washington would pick second if the season ended Sunday, followed by New England third and Arizona fourth.

Bears secure No. 1 overall draft pick thanks to Texans’ win

The Chicago Bears moved past the Houston Texans in the draft order on the final day of the regular season to lock up the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Bears lost 29-13 Sunday to the visiting Minnesota Vikings and finished the season 3-14.

The Texans then rallied to beat the Indianapolis Colts 32-31 for their third win of the season, wrapping the season with a 3-13-1 record — a half-game better than Chicago. The Texans will select No. 2.

Houston quarterback Davis Mills hit Jordan Akins for a 28-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion with 50 seconds left to provide the winning margin, with coach Lovie Smith opting to go for the win rather than a potential game-tying extra point.

The Bears have selected No. 1 overall only twice in their lengthy franchise history. They drafted halfback Tom Harmon first in 1941 and halfback Bob Fenimore first in 1947.

Prior to the late swap in position, mock drafts typically had the Texans selecting Alabama quarterback Bryce Young with the No. 1 pick. The Chicago Bears appear set at the position after second-year QB Justin Fields finished the season with 2,242 passing yards and 17 touchdowns plus 1,143 rushing yards (7.1 per carry) and eight scores on the ground.

The Bears might seek to address their defense with the top pick, with Alabama edge rusher Will Anderson expected to be a popular option in the early part of April’s draft.

Fields was held out of Sunday’s loss to Minnesota due to a hip injury the team doesn’t consider serious in the long term. Nathan Peterman started and Tim Boyle also saw time at quarterback for Chicago.

Lions GM: Willing to trade out of No. 2 slot

Detroit general manager Brad Holmes has put the NFL on notice: The Lions are willing to trade out of the No. 2 slot in the upcoming NFL draft.

In fact, Holmes told The Detroit News on Tuesday that he’s had “dialogue with a couple of teams” already.

With the team sticking with Jared Goff as their quarterback this season and the 2022 QB class considered weaker than years past, the Lions could have multiple offers at No. 2. Further, with Jacksonville picking at No. 1 and having taken Trevor Lawrence last year, the Lions’ spot could be where the first QB gets selected.

“I think definitely we could pull that trade off, if the other team is willing, before the draft,” Holmes said. “I would say right now it’s still relatively early for those discussions, but I would expect for it to heat up, especially with the pick that we have this year.”

Holmes added that the Lions have no dependencies on what Jacksonville does ahead of them.

The Lions also pick at No. 32 overall, acquired from the Los Angeles Rams in the Matthew Stafford-Goff trade. The Lions also received the Rams’ first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft in the trade.

Speaking of Goff, Holmes said the Lions are “happy with where Jared’s at right now.”

“Jared played good football for us late in the year, so we have a lot of optimism about Jared going forward, so we have a quarterback,” Holmes told reporters.

But that doesn’t mean they won’t draft a QB and stash him behind Goff for a period of time.

“Sure, I could see some advantage of there is a young quarterback that can learn under Jared,” the second-year GM said. “I don’t think Jared would have any issues taking on that role. He’s had more younger guys with less experience behind him, so he’d be very comfortable with that.”

The Lions head into the draft with nine total picks, including two in the third round but none in the fourth.
