Commanders sign free-agent WR Van Jefferson

The Washington Commanders continued to build depth through free agency and signed veteran wide receiver Van Jefferson on Tuesday.

The team did not announce terms of the deal.

Jefferson played his first three-plus seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, who selected him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He won Super Bowl LVI with Los Angeles following the 2021 season.

The Rams traded him to the Falcons on Oct. 10, 2023, for a late-round draft pick, and he appeared in 12 games with Atlanta. Single seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans followed.

With Tennessee in 2025, Jefferson appeared in 16 games (seven starts) and caught 29 passes for 350 yards and a touchdown.

In 94 career games (54 starts), Jefferson has 166 receptions, 2,226 receiving yards and 13 scores.

Reports: Falcons acquire WR Van Jefferson from Rams

The Los Angeles Rams are sending wide receiver Van Jefferson and a 2025 seventh-round draft pick to the Atlanta Falcons for a sixth-round selection in the same draft, multiple outlets reported Tuesday.

The Rams took Jefferson with the 57th overall pick of the 2020 draft, and the following season, he started all 17 games.

However, this season, he has taken a back seat to standout rookie Puka Nacua, and with the emergence of Tutu Atwell and the return of All-Pro Cooper Kupp from injury, Jefferson had become a spare part for the Rams.

He played just two snaps on Sunday in the Rams’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. On the season, while he had started four of five games, he’d been targeted just 15 times with eight catches for 108 yards and no touchdowns.

The Falcons current receiving corps is led by Drake London and Mack Hollins, as well as tight ends Kyle Pitts and Jonnu Smith.

In 49 career regular-season games (30 starts) with the Rams, Jefferson has 101 catches for 1,499 yards and 10 touchdowns. Most of that production came in 2021, when he made 50 receptions for 802 yards with six scores.

Jefferson, 27, is playing on the final season of his four-year, $5.61 million rookie deal.

Rams WR Van Jefferson ruled out for opener vs. Bills

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Van Jefferson has been ruled out of Thursday night’s season-opening game against the Buffalo Bills as he continues to recover from offseason knee surgery.

Jefferson, 26, had 50 receptions for 802 yards and six touchdowns last season, then added nine receptions for 102 yards in four playoff games. He caught four passes for 23 yards in the 23-20 Super Bowl victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Jefferson had surgery in the offseason to repair a nagging injury from the 2021 season and then aggravated the issue in training camp, necessitating a second procedure in early August.

Jefferson is expected to be Los Angeles’ No. 3 wide receiver this season behind Cooper Kupp and Allen Robinson.

Jefferson was the only Rams player listed on the Week 1 injury report.

Injury report: Rams WR Van Jefferson (knee) misses practice

Safety Jordan Poyer and receiver Isaiah McKenzie were both full participants for the Buffalo Bills, while wide receiver Van Jefferson of the Los Angeles Rams did not practice, according to the injury report released Tuesday.

The defending Super Bowl champions Rams and visiting Bills open the NFL season on Thursday night.

Poyer missed the entire preseason slate of games after hyperextending his elbow during practice on Aug. 2. He returned to the practice field Sunday and declared himself ready to go.

McKenzie has been dealing with a groin injury that kept him out of practices at the end of August. He is listed as a starter in the slot receiver position for the Bills.

Jefferson was a non-participant again Tuesday as he continues to recover from knee surgery over the summer. His status for Thursday is still up in the air. He’s the only Rams player listed on the injury report.

Also for the Bills, defensive tackle Tim Settle (calf) was a full participant. Meanwhile, offensive lineman Tommy Doyle (foot) and tight end Quintin Morris (hamstring) did not practice.

Reports: Rams WR Van Jefferson (knee) to see specialist

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Van Jefferson will consult with a specialist about a knee injury that has sidelined him at the start of training camp, multiple outlets reported Sunday.

NFL Network said the appointment is scheduled for Monday.

Cooper Kupp is the No. 1 target for quarterback Matthew Stafford, but Jefferson, along with offseason acquisition Allen Robinson, was expected to play a big role in the offense this season. Robert Woods was traded to Tennessee and free-agent Odell Beckham Jr. remains unsigned.

Jefferson, 26, is entering his third season with the Rams, who selected him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

In 17 games last season (all starts), Jefferson caught 50 passes for 802 yards and six touchdowns. In the playoffs, he caught nine passes for 102 yards in four games for the Super Bowl-winning Rams.
