Biggs: Cardinals pick Donnie Henderson as DB coach

The Arizona Cardinals found an experienced man to take over coaching responsibilities in their secondary as Donnie Henderson has been selected as the club’s next defensive backs coach, a league source told the National Football Post.

Henderson takes over for Teryl Austin, who left earlier this month to become the defensive coordinator at the University of Florida. Henderson served previously as the defensive coordinator of the New York Jets and Detroit Lions. He coached the secondary in Jacksonville in 2008 and was a volunteer for the California Redwoods in the UFL this past season.

Henderson broke into the league in 1999 as an assistant defensive backs coach in Baltimore and then was the Ravens secondary coach from 2000 to 2003, earning a Super Bowl ring.

He takes over a unit that will undergo at least some turnover. Safety Antrel Rolle is expected to be released before the opening of free agency March 5. Henderson comes on board in time to join the organization at the scouting combine and start looking for new talent. An announcement is expected soon.
