What are college football national title futures?

The crowning achievement of every NCAA football team is winning the college football national championship. Call it the NCAA title, call it the BCS Championship, whatever name means the same thing – supremacy in college football.

And since Americans are crazy about football, we don’t just want to bet on the games or who will win the Heisman Trophy this year, we want to predict the national title winner. And we want to be able to bet on it whenever we want.

This is why college football championship futures exist. Now, how do they work?

Oddsmakers place odds on each team. A perennial favorite like Alabama or Clemson or Ohio State may be 3-1 or 5-1. Darkhorse schools such as LSU or Wisconsin may be 20-1 or 30-1. And long shots – smaller schools with little championship pedigree – can be 100-1 or 250-1.

Why do college football futures change?

Great question, because Alabama might start the season in August as a 3-1 favorite after another terrific recruiting campaign. And they might get down to 2-1 if they win several blowouts or if other contenders lose. But if they lose their star QB or suffer an upset loss, those odds might bounce up to 10-1 or 15-1.

It all depends on the situation, the players, the injuries, the upcoming schedule, how other teams are performing.
