I fully expect another team to jump into the Brandon Marshall sweepstakes at some point this week. Not certain which team, but it appears Marshall has more than one team interested in his services. I do know this: The Denver Broncos won’t negotiate a trade for Marshall. Either a team is prepared to pay a first-rounder or move along. Denver will not take calls on Marshall; it’s either an offer sheet or he plays in Denver next season. If Seattle really wants Marshall, it will take the sixth pick in the draft….
The trade of Kerry Rhodes to the Cards is interesting from the standpoint it pairs him with Adrian Wilson. Wilson is a heavy hitter and Rhodes is a light hitter, or no-hitter at all, and Rhodes lacks the range of Antrel Rolle. The Cards will inherit a seventh day of the league year $2-million roster bonus that was guaranteed for injury in Rhodes’ contract. Dumping Rhodes will save the Jets more than $4 million….
Expect the Bears to start reducing player costs and release players this week, starting with tight end Desmond Clark, whom they’ve tried to trade without success so far….
I know that Karlos Dansby had four suits packed when he took his first trip to Miami and expressed a desire to make all his visits. However, my sources tell me he didn’t have four teams to visit. In fact, I’m told the Dolphins were the only team with a sincere interest….
Defensive end Jason Babin of the Eagles is starting to make some visits, but keep in mind, the Eagles have the first right of refusal in the event he signs with another team. The Eagles negotiated that right when he signed last fall, which was a very smart move….
I would think that Chargers third-string quarterback Charlie Whitehurst is going to receive strong action this restricted period. Teams that need a quarterback and liked Whitehurst coming out of college would be able to secure him for only a third-round pick. Same can be said for Troy Smith of the Ravens, whose cost is only a fifth-round pick. Both of these players are farther ahead than anyone coming out in the draft in terms of understanding the NFL….
The re-signing of Jon Jansen by the Lions means they want someone to keep pushing Gosder Cherilus, who is not a lock to be the starter in 2010. This will be a critical year for him to become a legitimate NFL starter….
I wonder why no teams have made a move on corners Ellis Hobbs or Sheldon Brown of the Eagles. Hobbs has a first-round tender on him but could be had for less. Once Leigh Bodden signs, I expect the trade market for these corners to heat up….
I keep hearing Pittsburgh DS Ryan Clark has some interest from teams but doesn’t have a great offer on the table….
I don’t expect Aaron Kampman to help the Jags right away, but as he heals from knee injury, his impact might be felt in the second half of the season….
Pittsburgh’s Limas Sweed doesn’t have a future with the Steelers, who have been very disappointed in his overall toughness and willingness to do the things necessary to be a pro.

Too many other needs for Seattle to blow a top-10 pick in a deep draft. I don't see Marshall happening if the Broncos are unwilling to do a trade. Pete Carroll's a pretty shrewd customer. A 2011 first-rounder, maybe. But not this year.

I could see the patriots getting bold and going after Marshall with their number 1 pick. Their window is closing and i think they are fairly resigned that they will win with offense. As a colts fan Marshall has dominated the colts which would be appealing to the patriots. Such a move would terrify me.

Sheldon Brown, a favorite player of mine, looked his age in the playoff loss for Philly. Once the defense had to rotate coverage help his way nobody could step up and allow that in the way Sheldon did so often for other Eagles. It caught them by surprise to have a team challenge Brown right out of the gate.
Cherilus must of had an unimpressive physical on his return. He has the upside, what is going on there?
Whitehurst had Gruden host him for a SR bowl practice week, maybe that means Bruce Allen will have heightened interest?
Dansby had four suits packed, was he talking to his agent on the phone in front of cameras and acting like it was another team? the Drew rosenhaus stunt for a Miam Alum comes to mind. Maybe it's something in the Miami water, or whatever designer drink Tipper Fortenbaugh could feature if he were on location there, again....
Des Clark could be of value for his blocking and hands, especially to another North team. He is slower by a step though and may pay the price after a catch. That would not remove his effectiveness from red zone appearances.
The possiblity of Seneca Wallace being a Brown would allow them to wildcat two ways. As a passing Wildcat with Wallace, and a running Wildcat with Cribbs. They could both be on the field and make the defense always wrong in terms of formational leverage vs. a front. That could make the Browns practices uptempo as well, something to allow more reps into the off season.
That could also be Troy Smith's value, someone to bring in for red zone appearances on an action pass. He could still develop more of his game, all for a fifth round pick. His team being set at quarterback could make his availabilty a steal. Other would argue if Smith is worth more Ozzie would ask more, but market prices dictate the other comp level. He's a great bargain at this time.

I think the story of this free agency period has been that teams, for the most part, have been conservative. No eye-popping deals and quite a few guys who probably thought they would be fielding multiple offers still waiting for their first. The Bears are kind of a one-off, as their front office and coach are desperate and their owner is aparently willing to give them the money to try tosave their jobs. No doubt the owners are practicing self-restraint with an eye on the CBA negotiations. Show the union they are prepared to hold the line and let vets hit the street. Then there are the 200 some RFAs who thought they would be UFAs. Adds up to a very unhappy union membership.
The Broncos will not get full value for Marshall. What do they expect after all the upset with McDaniels last season? They have only themselves to blame. The wild card is that Marshall will have to agree to a contract, so they probably won't be sending him to Cleveland or Buffalo.
I think there are still a lot of potential moving pieces on the trade board. Look for some big trades in the next couple of weeks.

If they "negotiate" then they could perhaps get #14 instead of getting stuck with a pick much further down in the first round from another team - Ravens/Bengals.etc.

im pretty sure one of the stipulations on the offer sheet is that the team has to surrender its own pick and not one acquired via trade or w/e

I think there are alot more variables to this than people think. It didn't help the Broncos (or Marshall) that Boldin was trading for peanuts. Seattle doesn't have a treasure chest of receivers (like maybe 2). IMHO I think the Broncos wanted to see what his value is and then, if reasonable, bring him back and sign him to a long term deal. It might have been posturing by both sides, but McDaniels and Marshall both said they would be open to a reunion. Botom line: I think Marshall is in a Bronco uniform in 2010.
The reason the Broncos would be stupid enough not to negotiate on Marshall is simply because of who is running the Broncos now. Josh has proven his mental prowess again and again. Marshall gone is a done deal. Someone may try and offer a two for him instead. The Moss trade everyone(two teams) waited until after the first to even start making offers.
Having watched Troy Smith play at OSU I can't imagine why Mike Holdgren wouldn't give up a fifth rounder to upgrade over the QB mediocrity he has now. the kid has a gun, athleticism and all the intangibles. It's a shame he's wasting away on the bench.

Marshall is a STEAL for any team for just a first round pick. The guy is a total jackass, no question, but this is a business and the business is winning. He can help any team win. There's NOBODY in this years draft that is better than Marshall.
One aspect of the 1st round tender that no one seems to be touching on is the scenario where as a team wanting to grab a player (but not surrender their low draft pick ) makes a trade with a 3rd party and then rewards the team originally owning the player that much higher pick .
EXAMPLE :
1) Broncs own Marshall , slap 1st round tender on him and state they will not negotiate
2) Bengals want him but don't want to surrender their 23rd pick
3) Bengals trade their 1st rounder to Saints ( For something like the Saints 1st & 4th )
4) Bengals then sign Marshall and give Broncos the 32nd pick from Saints
Instead of Cincy just getting Marshall for their 1st rounder ...they also get another draft pick
( 4th rounder from Saints )

How will Marshall react if Seattle just told him they were going to offer a huge signing bonus if Denver will work out a reasonable trade. If no trade is made, regardless of how reasonable the offer is, Marshall not be happy. He could be come more disruptive.

Just to clear up the possible Marshall deals. First , he has a first round tender. So if he agrees to a contract with a team, Denver would have 7 days to match or that team would surrender their original draft pick. The benefit is that the team receiving Marshall would have already came to an agreement with him. Or, Marshall can be traded, in which case the team could trade any draft pick or player, yet the trading team for Marshall would still need to come to terms with him. Denver holds all the cards. They want a first rounder or they will keep Marshall this year (don't necessarily rule that out, but there is a slim chance). If he doesn't get signed or traded this year, he plays in 2010 for around 2-3 million (pretty cheap for his productivity).

You are missing something. That's not how tenders work. For a team to sign a player with a first round tender, they have to give up a first round pick that is either their original pick, or a HIGHER pick. That's why the Seahawks, if they sign Marshall to an offer sheet instead of negotiating a trade, lose the #6 overall pick, even though they currently own the #14 overall pick as well.
Relevant quote from the CBA:
"[A RFA's] Prior Club shall receive from the New Club the Draft Choice Compensation, if any, specified in Section 2 above of this Article. Any Club that does not have available, in the upcoming Draft, the selection choice or choices (its own or better choices in the applicable rounds) needed to provide Draft Choice Compensation in the event of a timely First Refusal Exercise Notice may not sign an Offer Sheet in such circumstances."
Sorry Denver, nobody's going to give you a #1 draft choice. Lets get real. Where's all the takers? Either going to accept a #2 and lower round draft choice and or another player trade or you will have back a disgruntled player. Marshall will just play out his last contract year and then he will be an unrestricted free agent and Denver will get NOTHING. Look what Antwain Boldin went for. A #3 and a #4. Lets be real!
If no one gives us a 1st, then we should be fine keeping him. I wouldn't mind that at all. But do not let this guy go for less than a first!

Isn't Cincy's #21 pick reasonable to get Marshall? Is he any worse really than Chad in terms of distraction? Carson needs a big target, L.Coles came out and said that Carson wasn't comforable throwing to him, smaller target. Is a 5 year 45 million(22-25 million guaranteed) offer sheet enough?
Cincy wasted 10 million on Coles for 1 year, why not do this?
