Two years after the Arizona Cardinals made a blockbuster deal for Kevin Kolb and gave him a big contract, the club is pulling the plug on the quarterback.

Kolb will be released today, according to Adam Caplan, after he was unable to negotiate a restructured contract with the team. The sides discussed multiple options but could not hammer out a new contract so the Cardinals will cut him loose in lieu of paying a $5 million bonus that is due Saturday.

The Cardinals hoped to solve their quarterback issues that began when Kurt Warner retired by picking up Kolb from the Philadelphia Eagles. He played in only 15 games the past two seasons as injuries mounted behind a wretched offensive line.

Now, rumors are Kolb will land with the New York Jets where he could compete for the starting job with Mark Sanchez and the recently signed David Garrard.

New Cardinals coach Bruce Arians faces the challenge of finding a quarterback to compete in the NFC West, which in the course of a season has transformed into the best division in football. Without a solid passer, the Cardinals will not stand much of a chance.
