The San Diego Chargers have signed linebacker Takeo Spikes to a three-year deal, offensive tackle Jeromey Clary to a four-year, $20 million contract and tight end Randy McMichael to a one-year pact.

The Chargers added safety Bob Sanders on a one-year deal earlier this year.

The players can sign the contracts on Friday.

“All four players are veterans and have performed at an extremely high level,” Chargers coach Norv Turner said. “Obviously Jeromey has put a lot of work in with us to get to where he is and we’re excited to have him back. The continuity of keeping the offensive line together is big.

“I think defensively you want to be as strong as you can be down the middle and with Spikes and then Sanders, you’ve got two strong personalities that bring a real aggressive presence to the defense.”
Chargers general manager A.J. Smith called Spikes at 10 a.m. ET.

“He is an outstanding player," Smith said. "Takeo will bring his physical, aggressive style to our defense. I love his competitiveness and instincts. I believe he will be an immediate contributor. To me, this is another Randall Godfrey type move for the Chargers.”

A two-time Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection (’03, ’04), Spikes played inside linebacker for San Francisco the last three years in the 3-4 scheme under current Chargers defensive coordinator Greg Manusky.

“It’s going to be great playing for Coach Manusky again,” Spikes said. “One of the intangibles that I bring is my leadership. Even though everybody is from different places across America, to me I feel like the great ones bring everybody together and believe in the same common goal, and that’s to win a championship. That’s why I’m in San Diego.”

Entering his 14th NFL season, Spikes recorded his fourth season with triple-digit tackles in 2010, finishing with 109 along with three interceptions. Spikes made 12 tackles against San Diego on Dec. 16 and needs 104 to reach 1,000 for his career.

“I’ve never had the luxury of having a point man like that who not only plays well, he challenges everybody else to play to a higher level around him," Spikes said of quarterback Philip Rivers.
San Diego is the fifth NFL team for Spikes, who also has played for the Eagles, Bills and Bengals.
If healthy, Sanders could be an enforcer in the middle of the secondary.

“We are all very excited to add Bob Sanders to our defense,” Smith said. “We have always held him in high regard. He’s a smart, physical, instinctive player. His intensity and playmaking ability can make an immediate impact on our defense.”

“I’m extremely happy that I get to stay here in San Diego with the guys I’ve worked so hard with the last five years and continue to build and get better and work our way to a Super Bowl,” Clary said.
McMichael caught 20 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns last season, his first with San Diego.

“Randy was an integral part of our team last season,” Smith said. “He proved last year he can step in and perform when he’s needed.
