The Washington Redskins have yet to formally announced what they are going to do with Albert Haynesworth.

When the opportunity was there to release the defensive lineman before the lockout began, the Redskins kept him. Who knows? Maybe they’re going to keep him dangling as long as they can as some sort of punishment. It will likely be tough for the team to trade the disgruntled player.

From the sounds of things, there is simply no way the team brings him back for a third tumultuous season.

“He can do almost anything he wants. He doesn’t want to do anything. To me that’s the issue,” Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett said on the 101 ESPN in St. Louis, according to the Washington Post.

“He’s one of those guys you walk in a meeting and you tell him, ‘Put down the phone.’ The next day you have to tell him to put down the phone. The next day, you tell him to put down the phone.

“You tell him, ‘Don’t read the newspaper in meetings.’ The next day you have to tell him the same thing. It doesn’t stick; it’s an every-day thing.”

The problem was Haynesworth had next to no interest in the team’s defensive scheme, which isn’t too far off from the problem the coaching staff had the year before when Greg Blache was running the defense.

“He just didn’t want to play in this scheme. He didn’t want to play in the 3-4,” Haslett said. “He didn’t want to do the things we wanted. Then we said, ‘Okay, if you’re not going to do it, let’s not do it. Let’s play nickel, play the 3-technique.’

“Then, it got to the point where he said, ‘I don’t want to play first- and second-down nickel. I just want to play third-down nickel.’ Oh my God, you’re relegating yourself to 10-15 snaps a game. Then after that he didn’t want to do the blitzes, he just wanted to rush.”

Haynesworth has some court business to tend to this summer. That will keep him occupied before he has to worry about what scheme he might be asked to play.
