DA's arrival puts some heat on Leinart to produce. Matt Bowen
Former Cleveland Browns QB Derek Anderson signed a 2-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals today—for a reported $7.25 million—and the domino effect of this new deal should head all the way up to Seattle and Pete Carroll.
Both Arizona and Seattle were in talks with San Diego backup QB Charlie Whitehurst, and now it looks like there could be an open door to the Seahawks if Carroll decides to invest in a veteran QB instead of a rookie.
But, for the Cardinals, they now have a veteran QB of their own in Anderson. Despite the discussion that Anderson is inconsistent, he does bring a big arm to the desert, and more importantly, some added pressure on Matt Leinart.
I don’t see Anderson beating out Leinart if head coach Ken Whisenhunt opens up the competition this summer during training camp for the quarterback position. However, if you are Whisenhunt, why wouldn’t you want a QB who can throw the deep ball on your roster to at least make Leinart think twice about his job security?
Despite the fact that Leinart was a first-round pick — under a different head coach at that — he hasn’t proven to Whisenhunt that he is a starter, nor has he had the type of career that guarantees him anything yet in the league. Lots of hype, but not a ton of production. Actually, we can almost say that there are still plenty of questions that surround the idea of Leinart playing and acting like a pro.
Anderson comes in as an insurance policy to all of that. If Leinart struggles, or can’t produce wins, Whisenhunt has a QB with starting experience. And, that is what this deal is all about.
I like the idea of Leinart running Whisenhunt’s system in Arizona. He will get the ball out of his hands quickly, and he will be able to hit the short to intermediate combo routes that do produce numbers. But, those numbers were under Kurt Warner. Again, lots of hope in the arm and the capabilities of Leinart, but if Arizona had full confidence in him, Anderson wouldn’t have just signed a deal to come to town.
Now, Arizona has a backup plan — something it didn’t have before bringing in Anderson.

I hope this means that Derek Anderson will be the opening day starter.
Leinart is -- and has always been -- awful at Arizona.
Matt Leinart simply isn't an NFL-quality QB. Weak arm, poor footwork, slow-as-molasses throwing motion, unable to read an NFL defense, unable to memorize his own playbook, immature.
Hopefully, Derek Anderson's signing spells the end of the failed Matt Leinart experiment. Time to call him what he is --- the biggest 1st round QB bust since Ryan Leaf.
JaMarcus Russell would take issue with that one based on weight alone.
Leinart is a stiff. Derek Anderson has at least had one decent season as a starting QB in the NFL. Now that he's with a quality coach and organization maybe there is more where that one decent season came from.
Anderson has more wins in 1 season than Leinart does in his career. Worth picking up.
Forget Whitehurst... Pete Carroll and the Seahawks should look into acquiring Arizona's now-backup QB, Matt Leinart. If anyone can make him a serviceable QB, it's Carroll considering Leinart's most successful year as a "pro" (let's face it, USC was basically a pro team back in those days) was under Carroll's tutelage.
Wow! The poor guy (HardHat) is actually hoping that DA will replace Linehart??? You have no idea what your asking for. The browns didn't even have him as the starter do to his erratic play. There is no doubt DA has a strong arm, but what good is a cannon if its not strapped down and bent like a horseshoe... seriously, everyone in Cleveland wanted him to succeed... Everyone! He just doesn't have the poise. He has the confidence to attempt passes that only elite quartebacks would try, but the accuracy just isn't there... we have watched him throw countless numbers of passes over his recievers heads or miss a simple 5 yarder. Trust me when I say that if Linehart doesn't pan out, AZ is hosed at the QB position. I geniunly feel bad for Cardinals fans. We simplified our offense to the equivalent of a pop warner team and still couldn't get any production. The bottom line with DA is that you better surround him with a dessert full of offense (like the Browns in '08') or you are going to have a miserable, depressing, rollercoaster ride. DA wasn't and isn't a starting quarterback and AZ groesly overpaid for a stiff (not to mention a mental midget). I honestly think I could do better... that's my $7.25 million AZ spent on DA. DA your a loser, just accept it and quit blaming the fans for your ineptitude... hell you should thank us, how else wher you going to become a millionare? With your good looks??? PSH!
Strong arm, good elevated launch platform, can see over the others well.
Accuracy may be a weakness, but look at the catch radius of his targets, especially Fitz. Suddenly that accuracy isn't as weak, though it may take him a bit to adjust on all the man routes they throw(a ton of shallow series).
The fact remains that the man's arm can make the top of their receiver tree into an item in and of itself. Breaston remains effective for that reason. Doucet has all kinds of game and is tough over the middle, they should be confident in challenging the seams of a defense.
Yeah I think this was a good fit because of the WR's as Mr. Murder broke it down. He's a big play high risk high reward QB just like the guy that retired. Only he's physically more gifted. We'll see how this plays out. I'm not a Lienhart fan.
The fact is the Cardinals no longer have a franchise QB. Counting on receivers to make your QB better has limitations. There is no doubt Leinart is not the answer, but neither is Anderson. I don't think their D has gotten any better. Depends on what they get in the draft, but I see AZs postseason appearance run in serious jeopardy. They're just another club with another guy at QB.
Neither QB has been overwhelmingly impressive. I'm betting there is a 50/50 chance that one of them will be successful. The team has been well run for a number of years. Having both of their QB plays crap out would be out of character for a team of this caliber.
Good Luck Derek. I hope you do a great job for AZ
Another group of fans with false hope in a couple of bumbs. Your recievers are not going to make one bit of difference when DA stares at Fitz from the minute he leaves the huddle and makes the decission to throw the ball into double coverage or a last minute check down that will be a 5 yard incompletion (probably 5 yards above the head of its intended reciever), leaving you scratching your head and saying "why did he just do that? My 6 yr old son could have done better."
I'm done educating AZ fans on the misguided faith that they have on there $7.25 million 3rd string QB (being generous).
It doesn't take but an ounce of football knowledge to see that DA started his NFL career as a backup, his career stats implore you to see that he was over paid @ $700K and even when he was having success, he turned the ball over at the opposing teams will.
Mark my words... dude is a chump!
MEMO TO ALL CLEVELAND FANS:
Watching the Cleveland Browns the last couple of years has been like watching a college football team. Derek Anderson is coming to a much more talented team with Fitz, Breaston, Doucet, Hightower, Wells, Patrick, and Stephens-Howling. Who does Cleveland have? Josh Cribbs and a bunch of bodies. No wonder Derek Anderson had his best year when Braylon Edwards caught 75% of the passes thrown his way. Even then, Braylon Edwards led the league in dropped pass percentage!
Also, all you non-Cardinal fans act like Warner was playing at the high level we've witnessed over the past few seasons when he arrived in Arizona. That was definitely NOT the case; Ken Whisenhunt and his staff worked EXTENSIVELY with Warner to improve his mechanics, his release, and his pocket presence. They also worked extensively with Warner to lower his fumbles and decisionmaking. The offense is designed to get receivers open with the wideout flood formations that Derek Anderson has never had the pleasure of working with.
What Anderson has that Warner (and to a lesser extent Matt Leinart) doesn't have is arm strength. Even though the Cardinals had one of the best scoring offenses in the league last year, they were near the bottom in big pass plays (20 yards or greater). This was a direct result of Warner's inability to complete the deep ball. Anderson will find that Larry Fitz can beat any DB in the league on jump balls, Breason will get open with crisp routes/speed, and Doucet will be the muscle receiver in the Anquan Boldin mold (throw short and he racks up YAC).
So there you have it! Derek Anderson just left a chump team and joined a champ team with great offensive weapons.

I'm pretty sure he's more than a backup plan, just like he was in Cleveland. The real question is "Is Anderson more than a backup?" We all know the answer to that question is no.
