The Indianapolis Colts are getting ready to back the Brinks truck up to Peyton Manning’s front door.

Team owner Jim Irsay said he is prepared to make the quarterback the highest-paid player in the NFL.

“I've offered to make him the highest-paid player,'' Irsay said in a conference call, according to Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star. "(But) we need people to surround him and to have a chance to win a Super Bowl.''

In other words, Manning can’t demand such a big piece of the pie that it limits the club from adding pieces around him.

The way Irsay talked, a deal for Manning could potentially be completed in a matter of days.

“(It) is a big priority and it's something I hope gets done very quickly,” Irsay said. “And quite frankly, it should get done very quickly because he is going to be the highest-paid player.''

Per the report, the Colts previously offered Manning a deal averaging $20 million per season. If that couldn’t get it done, where could this thing go? The franchise tag this season – if the Colts can’t hammer out an extension – would cost $23.1 million.

“Under the (new) system,'' Irsay said, "you cannot pay a player $25 million. It's just not going to work. You're not going to be able to compete.''
