Quarterback David Garrard, who has not played a snap in a regular season game since 2010, has ended his comeback try with the New York Jets, due to a problematic knee.

Garrard sent a text to ESPN's Adam Schein, who sent the message out on Twitter that the quarterback is giving up on football due to his injury.

The text message from Garrard read, "Having to call it quits. My knee is not holding up. Continuing to swell after practices. Limiting what I can do."

Garrard's departure brings the number of quarterbacks in Jets camp now down to four with Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms still on the roster.

There had been one school of thought that the Jets wanted Garrard to mentor the rookie Smith and perhaps start the season as the regular quarterback. But that won't happen now with Garrard's decision today.
