Report: Colts, Cardinals placed claims for Ben Tate

The Minnesota Vikings were awarded their waiver claim of running back Ben Tate, who was cut by the Cleveland Browns earlier this week.

But according to ESPN.com, the Vikings weren't the only team to try and get Tate on their roster. The Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals both put claims in for Tate, which ultimately were unsuccessful.

Everyone expected the Colts to put in a claim for Tate with Ahmad Bradshaw's fractured fibula ending his season prematurely. It's somewhat of a surprise to see the Cardinals try and acquire Tate, though it does make sense. Though Andre Ellington has been the go-to back in Arizona's offense, there isn't much help elsewhere in the backfield, forcing Ellington to carry the ball over 20 times a game.

Another presence in Arizona's backfield could shoulder the load for Ellington, who has been playing on an ailing foot all season.

But all of that is null and void with the Vikings getting Tate. Tate figures to take carries away from rookie Jerick McKinnon and potentially leap-frog Matt Asiata on the depth chart in the coming weeks.
