Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo had a minor surgical procedure on his back to remove a cyst in April that could keep him sidelined until training camp.

Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas reports Romo will be sidelined during OTA’s that begin today in Valley Ranch. If Romo can return in June, he could potentially participate in minicamp from June 11-13. Otherwise, he will not be on the field until the club travels to Oxnard, Calif., for training camp beginning July 19.

The specific nature of the injury is not known but the Cowboys felt good enough in Romo, 33, to sign him to a six-year extension with $55 million guaranteed and a maximum value of $108 million. That was in March.

Backup Kyle Orton will work with the first team in Romo’s absence.
