Texas A&M lands top Class of 2014 pro-style QB
Kyle Allen, one of the best pocket passers in the Class of 2014, gave a verbal commitment to Texas A&M on Monday afternoon.
The 6-3, 197-pounder from Desert Mountain High School (Scottsdale, AZ) chose the Aggies over other finalists Ohio State, Notre Dame, UCLA and Oklahoma State.
Allen will be heading to a program that runs a pass-happy offense under head coach Kevin Sumlin, and the Aggies produced Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel last fall. If Manziel turns pro after the upcoming season, Allen would be expected to compete with Matt Davis, Matt Joeckel and Kenny Hill for the starting job in 2014. One of the team's 2013 signees, Kohl Stewart, is expected to be one of the top Major League Baseball amateur draft selections on Thursday.
As a junior in 2012, Allen went 202-of-280 passing for 3,119 yards and 36 touchdowns with seven interceptions.
The commitment of the Army All-American will only strengthen A&M's stature in early Class of 2014 team recruiting rankings. The Aggies now have 12 commits in this cycle, including possible impact defenders in outside linebacker Hoza Scott and safety Dylan Sumner-Gardner.
