Monte Kiffin is the best defensive coach in football.
From 1996 to 2008, Kiffin was the defensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. During the time, I had four clients play for him. Each of them loved him, played hard for him and learned much from him. Now USC will reap the rewards of his presence.
As the father of the Tampa 2 defense and with 13 years as a coordinator, Kiffin’s defensive units have finished in the top 10 in fewest points allowed and fewest yards allowed 10 times during that period, an NFL record. He brings with him a blueprint for success and the ability to teach it to any type of player. He’s approachable and easygoing but gets the most out of his players.
By hiring Lane Kiffin, USC really got two head coaches with Monte coming on board as well. And according to those who have worked with and for Monte, the best defensive coach in football, period.
The Pac-10 just got a lot more interesting.

I read somewhere that the additional space between the hash marks on the collegiate playing field make it virtually impossible to play the pro-style Tampa-2. Apparently, Pete Carroll developed a modified version of the Tampa-2 for the college game.
Anybody out there with significant X&O knowledge who can explain? Did Monte Kiffin have to alter his schemes when he left the NFL for Tennessee?
I concur. In fact, I posted in the Bucs' NG a few days ago a theory that the Kiffin's were a package, & that Kiffin fils might not have gotten the Troy gig if he couldn't bring along pere.
In Tampa we miss Monte (with whom the club still has a good relationship, BTW).
As a lifelong Buc's fan, I love Monte Kiffin, but UT's defense actually got worse under Monte.
In 2008 they finished the year tied for 3rd nationally in total D, and tied for 1st in the SEC w/ 'Bama.
In 2009 they dropped to 22nd & 5th.
2008 4th & 2nd in Pass D, and 2009 12th & 5th.
2008 12 & 3 rushing D, and 2009 65 & 8.
2008 10 & 3 in scoring D, and 2009 38 & 6th.
With all of that being said, as a lifelong Gator fan, I'm glad to see him out of the SEC. :)
If you want to talk college football (aside from scouting potential NFLers) just come out and say it. Stop pretending this is an NFL blog site.
"These professional football insiders will bring a unique and previously unavailable glimpse into the inner workings of NFL front offices, locker rooms and playing fields."
Where in that statement do you say anything about covering college ball?

Your post doesn't seem to match the thread.
What are you responding to?
No doubt about Monte's football coaching credentials.
Too bad he couldn't "coach" his son about honor and dignity.
Lane leaves a slime trail behind him.
When Al Davis was calling Kiffen a liar last year, I figured it was just crazy Al who
had lost control and once again was jerking his coach around. I hope that UCLA holds
Norm Chow to his contract and doesn't let him slide across town
Mack-The Kiffins are another father son team in a line of them where the son isn't worth a quarter of the father. The Moras and the Phillipses also come to mind.
Lou Too -- the quote I referenced is from National Football Post's "About" page describing the overall direction of the site.
The rest of my comment is about the fact that Mr. Bechta's post about the Kiffen's refers to A college head coach and coordinator pair. The University of Southern California is a college and the football team from USC is not a pro team.
I hope that cleared up any questions you had.
Just curious why anyone who doesn't like college football would click on the article to whine about college football coverage. Seems like a waste of time - unless you're really looking for something to whine about.
AKA Lou, it obviously takes more than a year to set a system in place, & Monte was coaching with players that may not have fit what he wanted to do.

Wade is and has been a pretty good coach. He has paid his dues and made his own success.
Don't know much about Monte Kiffin except for his league wide rep that he's an excellent DC.
Did anyone catch Warren Sapp's comments about Monte on NFLN?
He said something to the effect that when he was playing for him in Tampa, Monte coaches like it's "all about him"....you know that God-like complex & not really recognizing the players. If I remember right I believe he said he did wouldn't want to play for Monte.
When I saw this article what Sapp said about Monte Kiffin immediately came to mind. Monte sounds like a brilliant top tier DC but I was just wondering if there was more to what Sapp had brought up. Besides Sapp's comment I haven't heard any other news about players being rubbed the wrong way by Monte. Has anyone else?
Mike J:
I don't know all of the ins & outs of the Tenn "D". What I do know is that the Tampa II is based on speed. The amount of team speed needed to run it is going to be a rare find in the NCAA. Again though I have mad respect for (the real) Coach Kiffin, and know that he is out of the SEC, I wish him all the best.
Mike in MD:
I've never heard anyone speak ill of Monte, and everyone I've spoken to that has met him says that Sapp is an @$$, so I'd take anything he says with a grain of salt.
I know that when he left Tampa Sapp tried to blame his decreased production on the coaching staff, but I noticed he didn't get a whole lot better when he landed in Oakland, (not that ANYONE gets better in Raiderland) :)
oops! That should read "now" that he's out of the SEC.
Jack, I have some in depth questions about the limitations of free agency on the Final Eight teams. I will use a Ravens UFA for this example, Mark Clayton.

The Floyd Peters defensive system is what he employs. Doesn't that essentially root back to Bud Carson as well?
Monte Kiffin is a treasure to the sport of football.
