Bears bench Chilo Rachal, he splits

The Chicago Bears informed left guard Chilo Rachal he was being benched on Wednesday and the veteran didn’t take the news very well.

Rachal has been placed on the reserve/left team list and the club has signed undrafted rookie free agent James Brown from the practice squad to promote him to the 53-man roster.

Rachal, in his first year with the team, made eight starts at left guard. It is expected he will be replaced by veteran Chris Spencer, who started the first two games at the position. The Bears announced Rachal had left the team for personal reasons.

A fifth-year pro, Rachal was signed to a one-year contract for $700,000 in a minimum-salary benefit deal. Rachal has five days to report back to team. If he does not, he will be placed on the reserve/left team list and ineligible to play the rest of the season.

The Bears allowed six sacks Monday night in their 32-7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. For the season, the Bears have allowed 34, second-most in the NFL. Offensive coordinator Mike Tice hinted that changes could be coming on the line. It remains to be seen if left tackle J’Marcus Webb or right tackle Gabe Carimi could be benched and replaced by Jonathan Scott.
