Ohio State caps off incredible undefeated season
Ohio State won every game its players were allowed to play during the 2012 college football season. And that's one heck of an accomplishment in big-time college football.
Although the Buckeyes are not eligible for the postseason because of NCAA sanctions, Urban Meyer's team proved that it is one of the best teams in America by finishing off its 12-0 campaign by beating Michigan in Columbus on Saturday afternoon.
US PRESSWIREUrban Meyer completed a 12-0 season in his first year at Ohio State.
Naysayers can maintain that the Buckeyes played in a weak conference and escaped some ugly games with wins, but it's incredibly difficult to run the table in any league at any level of football, especially in the FBS.
The Buckeyes forced three Wolverine turnovers in the second half and didn't allow Brady Hoke's squad to cross midfield after halftime as Michigan was shut out after the break. In claiming victory over its bitter rival, Ohio State became the first undefeated team on probation since the 1993 Terry Bowden-led Auburn Tigers.
The question now is whether Associated Press Top 25 voters will give the Buckeyes some first-place votes in the final poll, especially those writers who don't like the BCS. It will be interesting. But no matter what happens in the polls, Meyer deserves a lot of credit for keeping his players focused each week when they knew that there was no postseason on the horizon. The resiliency that the Buckeyes showed all fall was, quite frankly, remarkable.
Sure, OSU had close victories over Cal and Indiana, and it needed overtime to beat Purdue. But it also beat the Boilermakers without Braxton Miller, their best player, in the critical stretches. And when all of the games were played, a "0" remained in the Loss column. That's all that matters.
This was a team that finished 6-7 in 2011, and Saturday it just completed the sixth undefeated season in program history. Quite a turnaround.
There's no question that the future is very bright for Meyer and the Buckeyes no matter what the final polls show in January.
