Expanded rosters when the NFL finally does return to work has been a topic that has been tossed around a little bit, and Jason La Canfora of NFL.com says the competition committee has supported the idea.

While no specifics are in play yet, the report states rosters could be expanded from an 80-man limit to to 90. It’s not that great of a jump when you consider that with NFL Europe exemptions, teams often opened training camp with more than 85 players on their roster.

The expanded rosters would help teams deal with attrition that happens naturally in camp and give clubs additional time to evaluate more players, specifically the undrafted college free agents that will be signed after the lockout is ended.

One idea not presented in the story, but suggested by one source, is that rosters might not have to be whittled all the way down to 53 until a month into the regular season. La Canfora also reports that practice squad rosters could potentially be expanded in this scenario. It’s one of the hundreds and hundreds of details that still needs to be straightened out.
