Quinn delivered illegal block, causing Suggs' knee injury Aaron Wilson
OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens middle linebacker Ray Lewis is furious, and so is Terrell Suggs’ agent.
APBaltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs has suffered a knee sprain.
An angry, frustrated reaction has defined the fallout after the Ravens’ Pro Bowl outside linebacker suffered a sprained knee when he was struck in the knee on a low cut block by Cleveland Browns quarterback Brady Quinn.
Quinn has been accused of throwing a cheap shot at Suggs that could sideline him for a while.
Suggs is out indefinitely and is wearing a full-leg brace on his right knee with an electronic stem attached to his leg. He underwent a magnetic resonance imaging exam Tuesday, but coach John Harbaugh said that the team is still awaiting the results before determining how long Suggs will be out.
The pass rusher wasn’t expecting to be hit when Quinn launched himself at Suggs’ knees after throwing his second interception, drawing a penalty during the Ravens’ 16-0 win Monday night over the Browns.
“Heck yeah it was a cheap shot,” Lewis said. “When you’re running down and you’re looking at the quarterback going at somebody’s knees who doesn’t even have the ball.
“I want to see if he gets the same fine I got or even higher. Now this man is out four or five weeks because of some baloney like that. That's an illegal blow. I don't care how you want to look at it.'
Suggs’ agent, Gary Wichard, told the National Football Post in a telephone interview that Suggs is potentially out for the year because of the illegal block with nothing final determined yet.
“That cat should be fined as much as anybody is fined that hits the quarterback,” Wichard said. “That’s ridiculous. I don’t understand what he was trying to do. It was blatant. It’s absolutely criminal. It’s about as nasty as it gets.
“The guy had total control and went right for his knee. You can’t call that an accident. It was premeditated. The quarterback zeroed in on Terrell’s knee. That’s absurd. The ball carrier was right in front of him.”
Afterward, Quinn denied any malicious intent directed toward Suggs.
He claimed that he was trying to bring down cornerback Chris Carr, who intercepted the football.
“I was trying to go for the ball carrier,” said Quinn, who appeared to be upset about the injury. “Suggs came across at the last second in my vision. I would never wish that upon anyone. I was upset about it on the field.
“We worked out in Arizona together. I couldn’t be any more. I couldn't be any more sorry about that. That was never the intent. I'm sorry to Terrell and the rest of their team."
Relayed those comments over the phone, Wichard didn’t accept Quinn’s explanation.
As far as he’s concerned, it was an unacceptable and inexcusable act.
“Brady launched himself into a defenseless player,” Wichard said. “Terrell wasn’t even thinking about being hit. He tackled Terrell when the guy that he threw the interception to was running up the field. That should have been the target, not Terrell.
“Going at someone’s knee can really have a huge effect on what happens as far as a guy maybe being gone for the year. It’s ridiculous. There was no reason to do that.”
Wichard questioned Quinn’s intentions and wondered about his intelligence at possibly infuriating other defensive players.
“You’re a quarterback, dude,” he said. “You can’t tackle, so don’t take a shot at his knee. This isn’t going to sit well with a lot of other defensive players. Dwight Freeney is absolutely pissed off.
“This guy, Brady, is on the cover of Muscle & Fitness, so take him on like you’re supposed to take him on. It was an illegal play. Nobody is going to give Brady the benefit of the doubt.”
Meanwhile, Browns wide receiver and kick returner Joshua Cribbs was carted off the field, hospitalized and released after tests were ruled negative for a concussion when he was blasted by defensive end Dwan Edwards on the final play of the game on a pointless hook-and-ladder play.
Edwards, who delivered a forearm to Cribbs’ facemask, denied suggestions that he was seeking revenge for Quinn’s hit on Suggs. Cribbs was released from the hospital at nearly 4 a.m.
“It wasn’t retribution,” Edwards said. “I’m definitely not a dirty player. It wasn’t a cheap shot. I’m just playing football.”
Browns coach Eric Mangini has drawn heavy criticism for the play and told Cleveland reporters today he wouldn’t call that play again in that situation.
“In retrospect, I’d probably do it differently if I had to do it again,” he said. “You don’t want anybody to get hurt on any play.”

I have no pity for Suggs after the "contract" the Boo Birds from Baltimore had on Hines Ward and Rashard Jamal Mendenhall, subsequently taking out the latter for the remainder of last season. There are no tears for Suggs in Pittsburgh!!!
I don't like to see anyone get hurt, but these guys are being hypocrites. Defensive players take cheap shots at QBs all the time. Whether going low, going high, or trying to get a shot in and act like they couldn't move out of the way after the ball was released. Also, don't tell me someone wouldn't have tried to lay out Quinn on an INT return if they gotten had gotten the chance.
It's nice to see a QB try and take out someone, normally they just walk of the field disgusted after and INT.
Wouldn't expect, or want any, tears from a Pittsburgh fan. Hines Ward - Dirtiest Player in the NFL as voted by the players. And I'm sure the fans in Cincy will always remember that cheap shot on Carson Palmer's knee that ruined Palmer for a season and a half. Yep, that was a Pittsburgh cheap shot.
lol...defending Quinn who tried to tackle a player without the ball by going at the knees. Just senseless statement...almost as senseless as the statment above it about Mendenhall who was injured on a legal hit....By the way Hines Ward was rated dirtiest player in NFL...not anybody on the Ravens.
How's Polomalus knee holding up?...no tears for him in Baltimore.
Of course Suggs should be mad. He is a classy player. He expects clean play out there. Its not like he ever takes cheap shots. Its not like he intentionally twisted Chris Johnson's ankle last year in the playoffs. This is certainly Suggs' first run in with cheap shots.
ELLERBE!
No sympathy for Terrell Thuggs or Ray Lewis. They took out Chris Johnson in the Titans playoff game last year, so they can kiss my Columbia blue ass. I think there is film of me giving the Ravens the double-bird a la Bud Adams last year. We could run that film side by side with the Bud Adams/Buffalo Bills Birds from last week, and they would be identical. One bird for Thuggs and One bird for Lewis.
Geez, I did naught no dat we had a futball team here in Tenersee. Lots a little birds dough. Yup.
This seems less about Quinn and Suggs and more about Brady and Lewis. Lewis and the Ravens were flagged, arguably a little excessively, when they last played the Patties. The whole Brady Rule and the notion that QBs have a right to special treatment, this seems the point of this focus on Quinn. The actual Quinn block did not look that low, but I likely need to see it ata better angle as Suggs was hurt.
Typical whine and moan from a player with a dirty past of his own to cry foul when he gets hurt but walks away laughing when HE injures somebody. How many players has he injured in the past? How many cheap shots and roughing calls does he own? What a cry baby and Ray Lewis can go suck eggs too.
