Giants personnel safe following mall shooting

Some New York Giants players and members of the team’s traveling party were inside the Mall of America Friday night when shots rang out but returned safely to the team hotel, per the New York Post.

Police said a 19-year-old man was killed in the shooting, and the mall was locked down for more than an hour, per the Post. The shooting came as part of a fight between two groups.

The Giants play the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday, and the team was staying at a hotel adjacent to the mall in Bloomington, Minn. The Mall of America is the nation’s largest mall and was built on the site of the former Metropolitan Stadium, where the Vikings and Minnesota Twins formerly played.

Giants play-by-play announcer Bob Papa tweeted that he was on lockdown at a mall restaurant, then again when he returned to the hotel to state that he was safe.

Some Virginia players to get extra eligibility

Any Virginia football player who ran out of college eligibility in 2022 will receive an extra year, the school’s athletic director said Wednesday.

Carla Williams told The Daily Progress in Charlottesville that Virginia requested the extra eligibility from the NCAA following the campus shooting that killed three football players and injured two other students, including one player.

Virginia’s final two games of the season were canceled following the Nov. 13 deaths of wide receivers Devin Chandler and Lavel Davis Jr., and linebacker D’Sean Perry. They were killed in a shooting in a charter bus after returning to campus from a class trip to Washington, D.C.

The Cavaliers were 3-7 on the season. A nonconference game against Coastal Carolina and the rivalry game with Virginia Tech were called off.

At least two of the eligible players will not utilize the benefit. Wide receiver Billy Kemp IV and defensive back Anthony Johnson have declared for the 2023 NFL Draft.

Virginia vs. Virginia Tech football game canceled

The football teams at the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech will not play this season.

Saturday’s game between the two rivals was canceled Monday, more than a week after three Virginia football players — Lavel Davis Jr., D’Sean Perry and Devin Chandler — were killed in a shooting aboard a charter bus in an on-campus parking garage. Students on the bus were returning from a class trip to see a play in Washington.

The decision was made to cancel the Commonwealth Cup game following discussions involving representatives from Virginia, Virginia Tech and the Atlantic Coast Conference. The game was set to be hosted by Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.

“The ACC and Virginia Tech continue to support UVA following the devastating tragedy,” a statement read.

Virginia also canceled its game this past weekend, in which it was scheduled to host Coastal Carolina in a nonconference matchup.

The cancellation likely ends the season for both schools, barring a surprise replacement game. Neither team is bowl-eligible.

Virginia went 3-7 under first-year coach Tony Elliott, while Virginia Tech is 3-8 under rookie coach Brent Pry.

Two other UVA students were wounded in the Nov. 13 shooting. One of them, Virginia running back Mike Hollins, was discharged from the hospital Monday. The suspect in the shooting remains in custody.

Virginia shooting survivor Mike Hollins leaves hospital

Virginia running back Mike Hollins was released from the hospital, a week after being wounded in a shooting that killed three of his teammates.

His mother, Brenda Hollins, posted the news on Twitter early Monday.

“Mike has been discharged!!! HALLELUJAH,” she wrote. “I want to thank everyone for their prayers, text messages, and calls. This has truly been a test of faith and I’m grateful. GOD has shown me he is faithful! Please continue praying for Mike as he recovers and settles into his new life. Please continue praying for the Chandler, Davis, Perry families! They need us!!! GOD is amazing!”

Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry were shot and killed on a charter bus in Charlottesville, Va., on the evening of Nov. 13 following a class field trip to Washington, D.C.

Hollins, a junior from Baton Rouge, La., was shot in the back after returning to the bus to try to help others. He had multiple surgeries to repair his injuries.

Another student, Marlee Morgan, also was injured in the shooting and is recovering at home with her family.

Former walk-on football player Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder, two counts of malicious wounding and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is being held without bail.

Hollins rushed 53 times for 215 yards and two touchdowns and caught eight passes for 114 yards in nine games this season.

The Cavaliers (3-7, 1-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) canceled their Nov. 19 game against Coastal Carolina. They are scheduled to finish the season Saturday against rival Virginia Tech (3-8, 1-6) in Blacksburg, Va., although the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Monday that the game could be pushed back to Dec. 3.

Report: UVA game at Virginia Tech may be rescheduled

The Virginia football team’s season finale at Virginia Tech scheduled for this Saturday may be pushed back to Dec. 3, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Monday.

The Cavaliers canceled their Nov. 19 home game against Coastal Carolina in the wake of a campus shooting that claimed the lives of three football players and seriously injured a fourth.

Virginia (3-7, 1-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) has lost three straight games and six of its past seven under first-year head coach Tony Elliott.

Virginia Tech (3-8, 1-6) snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 23-22 win at Liberty on Saturday.

Commanders to honor slain Virginia football players

The Washington Commanders will wear three helmet decals on Sunday to honor the three University of Virginia players who were shot to death on campus last weekend.

The navy blue and orange decals will bear the numbers of the three players: No. 1 for Lavel Davis Jr., No. 15 for Devin Chandler and No. 41 for D’Sean Perry.

A former Virginia player, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., has been charged with second-degree murder in the case.

“Our hearts are with @UVAFootball and the UVA community affected by the tragedy,” the Commanders tweeted Friday.

The players were shot on a bus as they returned from a trip to see a play in Washington, D.C., for a class assignment.

The Houston Texans (1-7-1) are hosting Washington (5-5) in the 1 p.m. game.

Mourning Virginia cancels game with Coastal Carolina

Mourning Virginia canceled its final home game of the season as the university attempts to recover from a campus shooting that claimed the lives of three members of the football team on Sunday night.

Virginia was scheduled to host Coastal Carolina but school officials and the football coaching staff involved players and support staff in the decision whether to play Saturday or call off the game.

“The decision was made following the shooting of five students on Grounds Sunday night,” Virginia announced Wednesday. “The incident resulted in the deaths of three members of the UVA team — Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry. The game would have been Virginia’s final home game of the 2022 season.”

No decision has been made about the Nov. 26 game against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., the school added.

Athletic director Carla Williams said Tuesday at a press conference “they’re going through a lot” describing the emotional toll on the Cavaliers’ football team.

The suspected gunman, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., is in police custody and charged with three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of using a handgun in the alleged commission of a felony.

Two other people, including one football player, were injured.

“It feels like it’s a nightmare to be honest with you,” head coach Tony Elliott said Tuesday.

“For me the best coping mechanism for me is the young men. Having a chance to be around them and to see them, and to see their pain, to see their hurt just inspires me to keep pushing forward each and every day. There’s no — you prepare for this job. There’s no chapter on a situation like this. So I’m trying to figure out step-by-step how to be strong for these young men.”

Coastal Carolina expressed support for the decision against playing the game on Saturday.

“As much as we love gameday and the spirit it brings, there is a time when the sanctity of life and sustaining of a community take precedence. This is one of those times,” Coastal Carolina’s vice president for intercollegiate athletics Matt Hogue said in a statement. “We fully support the decision and will continue offering our assistance and contribute however we can toward the healing of our friends and colleagues at UVA.”

Virginia decision to play Coastal Carolina TBD as campus tries to heal

The University of Virginia has not yet decided whether to play Saturday’s nonconference home football game against Coastal Carolina in the wake of the shooting deaths of three members of the team on Sunday night.

“We’ll make it together,” athletic director Carla Williams said Tuesday at a press conference. “It will be a discussion with Coach and the team. Honestly, they’re going through a lot and we want to make sure they’re involved as well. We’ll use our best judgment. But it’ll be soon. We’ll make a decision soon.”

“It feels like it’s a nightmare to be honest with you,” head coach Tony Elliott said Tuesday. “And I’m ready for somebody to pinch me and wake me up and say that this didn’t happen.”

A vigil was held on campus Monday night where thousands of Virginia students came together on the Grounds to honor the victims.

“The guys are on the road to healing, but it’s going to take some time,” Elliott said. “Nothing can prepare you for this situation and we want to be there to support the guys.”

Virginia’s men’s basketball game against Northern Iowa scheduled for Monday night was canceled. Williams did say that the rest of Virginia’s sports teams will resume playing for the rest of the week.

Due to the ongoing criminal investigation, Williams declined to answer certain questions about Jones. She did confirm Jones was a walk-on with the football team for one semester in 2018 and declined to say why he left the team.

“There was no overlap” on the team with the shooting victims, Williams said. “I don’t know if there was any interaction outside the class.”

Virginia DE D’Sean Perry killed in campus shooting

Virginia defensive end D’Sean Perry died Sunday night in a campus shooting that also claimed two others, university president Jim Ryan said in an email Monday morning.

Perry, 22, was one of three fatalities and two others were being treated for injuries, according to multiple reports, following a shooting at Culbreth Garage on UVa. Central Grounds at the University of Virginia on Sunday night.

A junior from Miami, Fla., Perry had played for the Cavaliers against Pitt on Saturday, recording two tackles.

Authorities on Monday were still searching for the suspected gunman, identified by Ryan and campus police as Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., a former Virginia football player. Jones was listed as a freshman in 2018.

“This is a message any leader hopes never to have to send, and I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia,” Ryan’s message said Monday. “This is a traumatic incident for everyone in our community and we have canceled classes for today (Monday, Nov. 14).”

Police responded to multiple calls Sunday reporting a gunman fired several shots around 10:40 p.m.

Charlottesville has experienced multiple gun-related incidents since the start of the 2022 school year. A total of five teenagers were shot between Sept. 22 and Oct. 15 and two other fatal shootings took place in October.

Report: Possible arrest in shooting of RB Brian Robinson

An arrest could be announced on Wednesday in connection with the August shooting of Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson, NFL Network reported.

The Washington, D.C., Metro Police Department scheduled a press conference for Wednesday afternoon to update several active investigations.

Robinson, 23, was released from the hospital on Aug. 29 after undergoing surgery for two gunshot wounds, one in the glute and the other near his right knee, during an attempted robbery in the nation’s capital the previous day.

Robinson was running agility drills less than three weeks later and made his NFL debut on Oct. 9. He made his first career start in a Week 6 win at Chicago on Oct. 13.

The 2022 third-round draft pick has 54 carries for 175 yards and one touchdown and added two catches for 13 yards in four games (two starts) this season.
