49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (thumb) uncertain for next week

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo sat out Monday’s practice with an injured thumb on his throwing hand, putting his availability for Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans in doubt.

Coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Monday afternoon that Garoppolo was affected by the injury during last Thursday’s 20-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans, and the team would re-evaluate him Wednesday.

Shanahan called it a sprain, but later in the day, ESPN and NFL Network reported that Garoppolo was also dealing with a chipped bone and a torn ligament in the thumb.

Garoppolo has started 14 of the Niners’ 15 games this season and completed 68 percent of his passes for 3,494 yards, 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

But fans who are ready to see more of rookie Trey Lance may get their wish this week. Lance would be in line for his second career start if Garoppolo can’t go against Houston.

Lance has seen action in five games this year and has thrown for 354 yards, three touchdowns and one interception while also picking up 137 yards and a score on the ground. In his lone start, Week 5 at the Arizona Cardinals, Lance went 15-for-29 for 192 yards, throwing a pick and taking two sacks while filling in for an injured Garoppolo. He also ran for 89 yards in that start.

At 8-7, San Francisco is in the thick of the NFC wild-card hunt, occupying the No. 6 seed with two weeks to go.

Kyle Shanahan on sticking with Jimmy Garoppolo: ‘I would guess so’

San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan threw tepid support behind embattled starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo after the 49ers’ fourth straight loss Sunday night.

In the aftermath of a 30-18 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in a downpour in Santa Clara, Calif., Shanahan was asked if Garoppolo would be the team’s starter in Week 8.

“I would guess so,” Shanahan said. “I’ll watch this tape and see if guys are healthy, first of all.”

The Niners dropped to 2-4 and play at Chicago this Sunday.

“I’m not just thinking about the quarterback situation right now,” Shanahan said. “I’ll evaluate everything, see where our team’s at, see who gives us the best chance to beat Chicago and see what our options are. … But we’ve got a lot of things to figure out.”

Rookie backup quarterback Trey Lance was inactive for the contest against the Colts after spraining his left knee in the Niners’ loss at Arizona on Oct. 10.

Garoppolo, 29, played despite still battling through a strained right calf he sustained on Oct. 3.

“It held up,” Garoppolo said. “Definitely felt it at times. But it sort of is what it is.”

Garoppolo finished 16-for-27 passing with a touchdown, two interceptions and a fumble.

49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo to start; Trey Lance (knee) out

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is off the injury report and on track to start for the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night against the visiting Indianapolis Colts.

Prior to the 49ers’ bye week, Garoppolo missed the Week 5 loss to the Arizona Cardinals with a calf injury.

Rookie first-rounder Trey Lance made his first NFL start in the 17-10 setback to the Cardinals and sprained his left knee.

Lance has been ruled out for Sunday and Nate Sudfeld will be the backup when the 49ers (2-3) face the Colts (2-4).

San Francisco also ruled out defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw (knee). Left tackle Trent Williams (ankle, elbow) is listed as doubtful and linebacker Marcell Harris (thumb) is questionable.

Garoppolo, 29, has passed for 925 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions in four games this season.

Lance, 21, also has played in four games and has passed for 354 yards, three touchdowns and one interception while rushing for 133 yards and one score.

49ers’ Trey Lance nurses minor knee sprain

Trey Lance joined fellow 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in the trainer’s room after spraining his left knee Sunday, leaving his status uncertain for San Francisco’s next game.

The 49ers (2-3) are idle this week before returning to action Oct. 24 against the visiting Indianapolis Colts. It’s unclear if either of their top two QBs will be ready for that contest.

Lance, a rookie first-round draft pick, got hurt Sunday in the 49ers’ 17-10 road loss to the Arizona Cardinals but played the entire game. He filled in for Garoppolo, who was sidelined due to a right calf injury.

“It’s not a long-term injury,” Shanahan said of Lance. “He’ll have to stay here on the bye week and get treatment and everything, so we should have a good idea by the end of the next week whether he has got a chance for Indy or not. If he doesn’t, they told me it should be like a one- to two-week thing but possibly just one.”

No. 3 quarterback Nate Sudfeld could be forced into duty if both Garoppolo and Lance are unavailable.

“I was messing with Trey and Jimmy that now Jimmy just got some company so they’ll be here, the both of them, the whole week so they have the best chance to be ready for (next) Monday when we all get back,” Shanahan said. “But I’m pumped to have Nate here. He was ready to go (Sunday) — he’s been ready to go every week. He’s as big of a pro as it gets. So if his number is called versus Indy, I know he will be ready.”

Lance, making his first NFL start Sunday, completed 15 of 29 passes for 192 yards with one interception and no touchdowns. He also ran for a game-high 89 yards on 16 carries.

Shanahan said of his quarterback options, “Trey definitely has the ability to help us win games. I thought he was a big part of why we had a chance to win that game (Sunday). I just wish we could have played better around him, too. Not that he was perfect by any means, but he gave us a very good chance to win that game and I know he will give us a chance to win a lot going forward.

“But it’s more of a decision than just which player do you want to go with. There’s a whole team here, there’s a lot more that goes into it and these three losses that we’ve had in a row, the answer good or bad, is not just the quarterback.”

Trey Lance to start for 49ers with Jimmy Garoppolo ruled out

Rookie quarterback Trey Lance will make his first career start Sunday when the San Francisco 49ers visit the Arizona Cardinals after Jimmy Garoppolo was unable to practice Friday for the third straight day.

Garoppolo suffered a calf injury and did not play the second half of last Sunday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Lance, the No. 3 overall draft pick in April, took over for Garoppolo to start the second half and completed 9 of 18 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns.

On Thursday, coach Kyle Shanahan said on KNBR Radio that if Garoppolo “looks good” in practice Friday, “then he’ll have a shot. If he can’t, then we’ll shut him down.”

General manager John Lynch doubled down on that assessment Friday morning, saying on the same radio station that, “I think today is critical. If (Garoppolo doesn’t practice) today, then we go with Trey.”

Garoppolo was ruled out on the Niners’ official injury report Friday afternoon, but it was unclear if any more would need to be done, such as a move to injured reserve.

Star tight end George Kittle, who’s also dealing with a calf injury, was listed as doubtful. Defensive linemen Javon Kinlaw (knee) and Samson Ebukam (hamstring) are questionable.

Cornerback K’Waun Williams (calf) was already ruled out by Shanahan.

Lance’s opponent for his first career start, Arizona, is the only 4-0 team in the NFL.

He’ll become the final quarterback of the five drafted in the first round last spring to make his first start — joining Trevor Lawrence (Jacksonville), Zach Wilson (New York Jets), Justin Fields (Chicago) and Mac Jones (New England).

49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (calf) departs, Trey Lance takes over

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a calf injury during Sunday’s 28-21 loss to the visiting Seattle Seahawks and sat out the second half.

Rookie Trey Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in last April’s draft, took over at quarterback to start the second half. Lance had been used sparingly in special packages during the first three weeks of the season while Garoppolo remained the 49ers’ No. 1 quarterback.

Garoppolo went 14-for-23 for 165 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the first half. The score was knotted 7-7 at halftime.

Lance finished 9-for-18 for 157 passing yards, two touchdowns and 41 rushing yards, but could not surmount Seattle’s lead.

Left tackle Trent Williams also left the game with cramps.

Kyle Shanahan: No QB battle for 49ers, not a weekly decision

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan reiterated once more on Wednesday that Jimmy Garoppolo is their starting quarterback and rookie Trey Lance isn’t challenging him for more playing time.

The 49ers (2-1) have used Lance on a handful of plays in certain packages and scenarios so far this season. The rookie threw for a touchdown in Week 1’s win over the Detroit Lions and powered in for a 1-yard rushing touchdown in Week 3’s loss to the Green Bay Packers.

A reporter asked Shanahan if the Niners aren’t using Lance earlier and more often because it might prevent Garoppolo from developing a rhythm early.

“There’s not a quarterback battle right now,” Shanahan said. “We’re going with our starting quarterback, who I think is playing very well. I’m happy that he is, so that Trey is not thrown into any situations he has to do too early.

“If he ever is thrown into that, then I know Trey will deal with that and he’ll get better as it goes. But we have the luxury where we don’t have to do that yet, to Trey or to our team.”

For his part, Garoppolo has completed 67.4 percent of his passes for 760 yards, four touchdowns and one interception through three games. Were it not for Aaron Rodgers’ last-minute heroics on Sunday night, the 49ers might be 3-0. After a slow start, Garoppolo led three second-half touchdown drives to take the lead late.

San Francisco hosts the Seattle Seahawks (1-2) on Sunday in what will be each team’s first NFC West game of the season.

49ers QB Trey Lance out one week with ‘small chip’ in finger

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance is expected to miss about a week with a “small chip” in his finger, coach Kyle Shanahan announced Monday.

Shanahan did not say which finger is injured, but Lance was favoring his right (throwing) hand late in the first half of Sunday’s preseason finale against Las Vegas.

The rookie hit his hand on the helmet of a Raiders defender during a follow-through. He played one more series in the third quarter before coming out of the game.

“It wasn’t bothering him much, because he just thought it was jammed on a helmet,” Shanahan said. “And then when you get all the images on it — when they showed it to me, it’s a microchip of a bone that’s off. He chipped it, which is a small chip fracture, which is worse than a jam. That’s why it’s not going to just heal on its own. He can’t take snaps and do all that stuff right now.

“We’re just going to rest it for seven days, they say, and that should make it heal and hopefully it’ll be good next Monday when we get into practice.”

Lance, the third overall pick in this year’s draft, is competing for playing time with veteran incumbent Jimmy Garoppolo. Lance went 19 of 41 for 276 yards this preseason, throwing three touchdown passes and one interception and adding a rushing score.

The 49ers open their regular season Sept. 12 on the road against the against the Detroit Lions.

Kyle Shanahan has ‘good idea’ of starting QB but won’t spill

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan doesn’t see a reason to name a Week 1 starting quarterback yet — other than to get reporters to stop asking him.

Asked Wednesday about the status of the competition between Jimmy Garoppolo and first-round draft pick Trey Lance, Shanahan said he had a “pretty good idea” of which quarterback he’d name to start, but wasn’t ready to share it yet.

“If there would be one reason I can think of by naming it that would help, it’d be to end those questions,” Shanahan said. “If you could give me another reason that it’s a big advantage that helps our team, affects anything that has to do with us, then I will name it. But I don’t think it does.

“And you know, why tell people? I know you guys want an answer, which is fine. I get the suspense of it, but I’m not just going to answer it to end your guys’ suspense.”

Shanahan’s remarks came hours after the Jacksonville Jaguars officially named No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence their starting quarterback and the Denver Broncos announced Teddy Bridgewater would start over Drew Lock.

It leaves the 49ers as the one of the few remaining teams without a Week 1 starter solidified — or at least publicly known.

Garoppolo was asked Wednesday if Shanahan had divulged to him which quarterback would start Week 1 against the host Detroit Lions.

“Yeah, I have a pretty good idea,” Garoppolo said. “It’s whatever (Shanahan) decides, yeah. I have a pretty good idea. I’m pretty happy with where I’m at right now and everything and just the offense as a whole.

“Yeah, Kyle’s the head man. He’ll make the call.”

Shanahan said at the start of training camp that Garoppolo was entering camp as the No. 1 on the depth chart and Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in April, would start as second string. The fifth-year Niners coach also said this month that Lance would see the field at least “situationally” during his rookie season.

Reports out of San Francisco’s camp have said Lance has received more first-team snaps of late.

Garoppolo has a 22-8 regular-season record as the 49ers’ starter but has battled a number of injuries, including a torn ACL and two high ankle sprains. He started Super Bowl LIV for the Niners, a game they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Trey Lance to replace Jimmy Garoppolo in preseason opener

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will start the San Francisco 49ers’ preseason opener this weekend and play one series before giving way to heralded rookie Trey Lance against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Niners coach Kyle Shanahan said Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s NFL draft, would play the remainder of the first half, barring a quick three-and-out on Saturday.

“We’re trying to start our starters for about one series,” Shanahan told KNBR on Thursday. “You hope it’s not a three and out, except on defense. On offense, you hope you can go down and score in six plays or something like that and get those guys out.

“I’m not playing every starter, but there’s some starters I want to keep out for health reasons and things like that. But most of our guys, I plan on playing, and we’ll get them out quickly. Once they’re out, I’m hoping Trey can finish out that first half. We’ll see how many plays he gets and what the situations are.”

Lance is the heir apparent to Garoppolo, who has been deemed the 49ers’ starting quarterback this season by Shanahan.

Garoppolo, 29, is 22-8 as the 49ers’ starter in the regular season, but injuries — a torn ACL, a sprained throwing shoulder and two high ankle sprains — have limited the quarterback. Acquired from the New England Patriots on Oct. 31, 2017, for a 2018 second-round draft pick, Garoppolo started just 25 games over the past three seasons as is entering the fourth year of a five-year, $137.5 million contract.

In 31 games (30 starts) in San Francisco, Garoppolo has completed 67.5 percent (596 of 883) of his passes for 7,352 yards with 46 touchdowns and 26 interceptions.

Lance brings to the 49ers a resume that includes 19 college games at FCS program North Dakota State. All but three of those games were in 2019, when Lance threw for 2,786 yards, 28 touchdowns and zero interceptions, while running for 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns. He led the Bison to a 28-20 win over James Madison in the FCS title game after the 2019 season.

The 49ers finished last season with a 6-10 record and open the 2021 season Sept. 12 at Detroit.
